Its ok, and I appreciate everyone trying to help me out. I did want to look into breeding bugs, but I dont want to breed roaches. My mom will kill me if she even heard that these water dragons eat roaches. I forgot to post about how my mom freaked when I brought Salem home. Hahah, I figured I wouldnt tell her I got Salem, but just kinda walk in the house with her :) lol. Anyway, I will do some research on how to breed superworms, and crickets most likely. I started researching the crickets already and have a slight idea. Im going to get some more meal worms today, and a uvb bulb today as well.

I might just throw in an order of these for now

http://www.petco.com/product/12681/Superworms.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch

Also, I have a 2ft flourescent fixture I can use, is there a good uvb bulb for under 20 bucks that will work with this fixture? Im gonna go to superpetz after I eat to pick one up, looking for the right amount of uvb for her. Any recommendations?

Go to LLL reptile supplies and order online ...best way to save money as opposed to retail... it will take a week to get the bulb ... so ifi you choose , you can take the dragon outside for a few days and for 20-30 or more minutes.

REPTI SUN 10.0
LLL reptile supply

Call them .. make sure you tell them if your fixture is T-8 ...or T-12...or whatever....or they will just ship the T-8 by default.

Ok the store wanted way too much for a single bulb. It was like 30 bucks for an 18" 5.0 uvb. So Im just gonna order from online. I have a question about food. Was wondering since I might do the food order things, how often I should place an order for superwoms/crickets/mealworms. About how often should I order, and about how many of each would be ideal? Im also gonna give breeding a shot and see how it goes, but it sounds like alot of work.

 Breeding Bugs

hi there hows every1 doing?? I breed crickets and locusts and its so easy. I bought a tub - its actually a plastic toy box - very cheap here in the UK so i assume they not gonna b expensive 4 u guys (cost me £1) - put a couple holes in the lid - smalll mind so they can’t escape - LOL - bought a tub of crickets on ebay and put them in the toy box with a couple of cardboard egg boxes and leave em to it!!!! I feed them every few days with tomato or cucmber and they have a coffee jar lid with water in. Within 2 weeks i had hundreds of crickets in the tub!!!
As long as u fee em they will breed constantly - i haven’t had 2 buy any crickets now 4 coming on 4 months so its great. Also remember to dust em wi vitamin powder and/or put some in their water.

Hope this is useful

Helps a bunch. I just placed a huge order of cricets anyway, as well as I ordered a bunch of stuff for my custom enclosure I will be ordering soon. I figured why pay shipping twice, so ordered it all now. Wow am I gonna spoil her. So, I think I will start my enclosure a little earlier than expected. Anyway off to give her some more eye drops and feed her some. Thanks a bunch!

 My Water Dragon

So I took my WD outside for like 20 mins to get some direct sunlight. I think I got her sleep schedule mixed up since ive been keeping the light on all day and night to keep the temps up. My house gets cold at night so I need a heat source. She was sleeping alot during the day, and when I took her outside she was sleeping on me. She wouldnt open her eyes, and about 1 min. before I got up to take her inside, she tried running on me, but kept her eyes closed. This kind of worried me because im wondering why she isnt opening her eyes. I am still putting the eyedrops in her eyes, and the eye still got the boogie looking thing, but doesnt seem to be getting worse. Just an idea, but would visene help any?

She really night a day & night....what you can do for night time is give her a heating pad and put it under the tank until you can get her a night time heat light..she really needs the night time sleep with it being dark...

Can you get another close up pic of her eye for me..I’d like to take a look at it again.....

Visine is a no - no Justin .. it has chemicals in it that gets the red out ... well I would have to look that up ... but that certainly won’t be what the dragon needs.
I have seen this question asked before ...I am repeating what I read.

What might help for night, is to replace the damp towel with a big sheet of aluminum foil. Cut some holes at the top for light and put it over so the heat can reflect down (the light reflects) and if you place it tight enough the heat should be able to keep for a bit. Is there a room in the house thats always hot? Or maybe put down the A/C a bit if you have that on? Oh but dont forget that it still needs vents lol to let fresh air pass.

Annie’s heat pad is nice too. I have no idea what Visine is lol, but you guys do haha

But like someone said before, you can also use childrens pink eye medication.

 My Water Dragon

So my WD seems to be doing pretty good lately. The boogie in her eye is getting smaller, and for some reason she likes to hunt with that eye when feeding. Im gonna start working on the new enclosure soon. Im also gonna see if my brother will get a WD as well, so then we can have both in the same cage. As Im gatherin material together I was wondering if anyone knows where Ican buy metal screen for the top in a large roll for a good price. Need something like 2.5’ by 4’.

Also very curious where I can get an inexpensive filtering kit for the pond. Im probably going to use this as a pond

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=148567-1569-PC2117

Do you think that will be a reasonable size for a pond?

My enslosure should be around 4’ long, 5’ high, and 2.5’ wide. Probably going to use plywood for the floor, and 3 sides. Front will consist of 2 full size plexiglass doors with handles so I have easy access to the hole inside. Will be lots of vines/branches inside as well as 2 uva lights for heat @100w, and 2 18" flourescent uvb bulbs. One will be on top, and one half way down so the uvb is spread out evenly as I read the flourscent tubes only give uvb up to 2’ down. On the bottom level, it will probably be some rocks, and a substrate(unsure). The rest will consist of the reptile carpet, and I will be using velcro so secure it so I can easily take it out to wash it if needed.

Im thinking of a way to make the food (crickets/worms) not be able to escape and run wild throughout the cage. Was thinking of maybe making a food area, for example taking a cat litter box, and recessing it in the bottom floor. So when my WD gets hungry, she can hop down in and eat whatever. But my only concern with that is how will she be able to get out of it. Im thinking she will be able to climb right out, and kind of hopeing that too. It will probably be around 4-5" deep, and slippery plastic.

Im also still looking for more ideas, so if you can think of something cool/inexpensive, feel free to let me know! Thanks in advance.

Not sure about the filter, but I bought hardware cloth from Home Depot. It’s in the gardening section and I think it was about 12 dollars for a decent roll.

Found this filter kit. Looks pretty neat and is fairly cheap imo. Anyway do you think this is suitable for the listed pond I mentioned before? Might have to fabricate this to work the way I would like it in the corner, so the pond will probably be tweaked a little bit.

Opinions?

Also, My WD is probably about 13" from nose to tail, and I tried feeding him some superworms which are about 2" long. They are much bigger than I thought, and for some reason I think they are too big for my WD. She seems scared of them and doesnt even bother. Im unsure of what to do, especially now that I have so many. Im wondering if it would be ok to keep my WD on a diet of just mealworms, and crickets. As she gets bigger I will try some more superworms.

Justin... when making a ink to the website of your choice ...use the LINK ...END LINK features of the message box... or manually type these characters before ...[ link ] [/ end link ] ...after,,, do not use spaces . I on;y used spaces so you could see what I am referring to.

The pond /waterfall is OK as far as GPH pumped ...but the filter may get clogged quickly due to the large movements a dragon has as compared to a frog...look at the units in a retail store and then purchase on line....the more GPH ..and the simpler to clean the better.

I like the magnum 350 ... but that is over 100.00

well I got my shipment of things for the cage the other day. Filled the cage already with a bunch of stuff. Im gonna try breeding crickets as well, and I just set up an aquarium for them. My WD finally ate a superworm too! She ate two of them right away. Im sure she would have ate more but I dont want to overfeed her. Her eye is pretty much back to normal as well. The big eye boogie thing is gone now and she seems fine.

Im only having one problem, and that is with the humidity. I cant seem to keep it where I want. I have to mist the cage all the time for the humidity to go back up, because it usually drops.

 My Water Dragon

I am a little confused at this point, lol but that is normal for me! You should be maintaining temps of 84-88 during the days, 90-95 in the basking area, and 75-80 at night. Period. Use an MVB for bigger cages (uvb plus heat) or as many lightbulbs as needed to maintain temps. At night you can use a CHE or red bulbs or other commercial night heat bulbs as needed to maintain temps.

You should be maintainting humidity levels of 60-80% or so. You can always pipe in the mist from an ultrasonic humidifier, that is pretty easy. If you have a screen top you can always cover part of it with a moist towel. You really need to get the humidity and temps right, or you won’t have a dragon to worry about.

What size is your tank? what are you using for temp and humidity gauges, uvb lights and heating?

My temps are pretty much right about there. Usually during the day, it is around 85-87, with basking area around 92. At night I use the moonlight bulb that also gives off heat. It was around 80 at night. humidity is still my only problem yet. I will try using the towel again, but now that I have a uvb flourescent, its less space to cover at the top. I am using a flukers digital therm/hydrometer.

 My Water Dragon

So i got all my supplies to build the new enclosure which I plan to start tomorow.

I have a quesiton tho. I just rearranged his current setup 2 days ago while I cleaned his cage out. Thing is, he seems stressed now like he doesnt like that I changed it or something. Hes been a darker greeen lately which im assuming is because he is stressed, and also hasnt been eating as much. Im hopeing that once I get the new enclosure built and setup that he will be alright. This should also help my humidity problem because its mainly made of wood. Im debating on drilling some small holes in the sides for airflow tho. Anyway, I will post the progress of my enclosure in this thread, so if yous wanna follow up, just check back here.
