 My enclosure

Was screen mesh but I covered it with that flexible pvc like they use for convertible car windows and stuff so now she can still climb up the screen but the temps and humidity stay higher. Fluorescent up top and incandescent down below (for the heat.) There’s cushioning on the bottom in case she falls out of the tree or jumps too far. Guess that’s it.

After helping my Mom replace her couch cushions I had some of that 5" foam leftover and put it on the bottom of the cage & covered it with newspapers. Works really good. I hated that thud sound of it’s jumping onto the ground. Ah, case in point, it just now jumped down and hardly makes a sound.

Those are some really beautiful enclosures you’ve all built. Makes mine look so primitive in contrast.

i think cause back then, everyone was like so serious here. i mean, its always been a really good forum, nice and friendly.... but, not so personable, if i remember right. and not so many sticky - type posts, except for the peeps pics... that is OT, though, so...

anywho, im thinking she probably thought it needed an explanation behind it.

though, im probably reading more into it than necessary, but i gotta type something......

 Update

I just removed that plastic over the screen. My dragon hated being all closed in and the humidity stays around 70’ (unfortunately for me) in here anyways. The cage looks so much nicer with all that taken off.

Been viewing this forum for a few months and got some good inspiration so decided to finally put my pix up of my efforts to create a larger enclosure for "Jaws".

Instructions, OK. This is really my test viv which needed to be built to solve the problem of a small existing enclosure. So, after a purchase on the net of a 2nd hand viv I decided to try some of my ideas.
The back needed to be replaced so some thick MDF was used and sealed using PVA. To include a water feature I needed some acrylic cut to the full floor size, around all 4 sides and a centrepiece to section off the water. This was all put together with black and transparent aquarium sealant. You can still see this in the final images but it will be covered by some bog wood once I’ve taken my tropical fish tank down.

First I installed the water feature using perspex around all four sides of the enclosure, stuck together using aquarium sealant and split into 2 sections. I drilled through both the perspex and wood to create a hole for the pipes. I actually split my perspex doing this but just used plenty of sealant to cover.

The next stage was the background. I’ve seen this done for other pets so thought I’d give it a go. Its expandable foam used to create an undulating root/earth feel. For small enclosures black sealant works well however its not easy to spread so for a large enclosure I reverted to PVA glue. Whilst the glue is newly applied I applied fine peat over it and repeated this process 3 times. In hindsight I’d probably choose a different background as this took ages but it does look very effective. I then added dried moss to various areas.

Once the background was completed I filled the water pool with chinese pebbles (from B&Q), put various pieces of wood in and glued them together or to the floor/walls with silicone. I also used a plant pole which goes the full length of the enclosure and is screwed into the largest piece of wood. The last step was to use plastic plants to decorate.
The lighting is a 3ft UV tube for 12hrs, a spotlight which comes on for 3hrs of the day (max recorded temp 92 F) and a heat lamp to remain the temperature of 75-85. His live food is provided in the plastic tray on the right which has a little petroleum jelly to stop them climbing out.
Jaws uses all the enclosure and it gives him plenty of exercise climbing the walls. However, he loves to get out and often spends hours on the Yukka watching the tropical fish :)

Very nice poxicator ....I really appreciate the detail and effort you took to type that up and post pics ....
Some terms ?
PVA=...spray adhesive or hand applied ...what brand.
Perspex = better than acrylic / where did you get it? I can only find acyclic sheets at the Big Box Home Improvement Stores.

Great work on showing all the components of the drain...as with any sink the has a mating system like that did you use any silicone or plumbers putty to seal the flange and basket?

I see the sponge ...is it dripping slightly? I am indoors and could / should solve that issue.

That’s cute the tropical fish thing ....lol...what a trip

Rodent111 and Proxicator - I’m loving your vivs.

Rodent111 - I’ve found the use of rope a great way for Killer to get around and maximise the space and area within his enclosure. It looks (to me) that you have a lot of "space" that could be better utlised (sp?)

Sorry I haven’t replied, missed the questions but I have replied to your pm Cphill58.

I’m from the UK so little point using brand names but PVA comes in a gallon container, its thick but runny glue which you mix 1 part PVA to 3-5 parts water. I then apply via a brush and apply over the foam. I’ve considered pond silicone for my next tank as its black and brushable which I found the sealant gun was not.
Acrylic is fine, its flexible which comes in handy when moving the tank, we got ours from a sign shop my wife works at.
I used silicone to seal the drainage, on top and bottom plus around the hole in the wood to seal it from moisture.
The sponge is only there to collect drips when I’m changing the water, it doesnt leak otherwise.
Its important to leave the enclosure to completely dry and fumigate for a few days once you’ve finished.
The only downside I’ve found is that the crickets can climb up the sides very easily so we now have a deeper bowl in which we put them.
