I try to give people the benefit of the doubt but often forget how young people are on this forum. Your advice is right on. I’ll keep posts down to basic newbie husbandry practices. Are there any uro foums that are more advanced?

Blake,

Based upon his most recent post it’s impossible. You can’t maintain temp gradients if a dimmer is used at the basking sight. I regret ever discussing my raise up cages in this thread. The information is of no use, and is misleading, if a keeper is young or a rookie.

It’s critical that this uro is put in a larger enclosure. It would also be nice to see pics of the OP’s set up.

Blake, physics, reality, math, common sense, etc. all say that there is no possible way his temps/gradient are correct.

Bird, wake up kid. You are causing long term damage to your Uro. If I were you I would take up the offer for a free enclosure. The Uro needs its immediately. Proper UVB and temps are needed to keep this animal from suffering further and as jbred said.. eventually death will occur if changes are not made.

Basically you have 2 options here:
1. Take our advice, make are the necessary changes and have a healthy Uro for a really long time
2. Ignore our advice, and watch your Uro suffer and come back and ask us why he stopped eating/moving/breathing/died

I have the supplies, I’m turning a bathroom sink cabinet into an inclosure. The basking temp is at a constant 120, I guarantee. and the cool side is 80. Why would I come on here and lie about that?
Thanks for the offer btw.

That’s ok man. I know that 10 gallons "can" be dangerous, but I guarantee that my temps are perfect. He’s not going to be there long. I almost have a bigger one built. Why would I lie about that? If my uro was "baking" why is he constantly basking?

You dont get it, and this is my last reply before letting you go about your merry ignorant ways and kill your Uro. It is not possible to provide a GRADIENT in a 10 gallon tank. Google the word gradient and see if you can figure that out. Also, you will need to know the type of wood being used for this new enclosure. most woods emit toxins above 100F (which Uro’s require) and can cause health issues very fast which you will not be able to prevent or treat.

good luck taking option #2

Birdboy,

The enclosure that I have is 4’ x 2’. It’s not pictured. You want it? It’s yours. Send me a PM.

A bathroom sink? How does that work?

How can the dimmer lower my temps if I already said the warm side is 120? I have the light like inside the tank, lowered and then dimmed to the right temp.

You do know theres certain distances that need to be achieved as well as UVB . You can’t just stick a bulb on a dimmer down in a 10 gallon tank and call it a day. DO you even have a UVB bulb ?
Basking spot ONLY "this should be a space slightly bigger then the uro in which he can get his whole body into "needs to be 130 and should be 12-18 inches away from the UVB bulb depending on which bulb you have. How can you have your uro 12 inches away if the tank is only 12 inches high ?
The AMBIENT temps of the enclosure need to be around 98-100 "this would be the air temps in between the basking spot and through the middle of the tank "should be around 24-30 inches across the middle"
AND a cool end around 80 degrees that they can get their entire body into "should be around 12 inches or so of the end of the tank"

Now you tell me how you can fit five pounds of sh%t into a 1 pound bag ? They need SPACE not just a temp reading . Why is your lizard panting ? He has no choice . Why is he basking ? He has no choice.
If you really had the temps up to 120-130 as you say you do with your magical secret dimmer then the rest of the tank WILL overheat. If you lower your magical secret dimmer temps so as not to overheat the tank then you will NOT have 120-130.

And, why am I wasting my time ? Your completely determined to kill your lizard anyway.

A dimmer senses ambient temps. What you’re doing does not work. Please posts pics of your IR temp gun on the basking sight and areas around the basking sight.

I’m guessing that you don’t have a temp gun?

A dimmer doesn’t sense anything. It mearly cuts the amount of voltage to the item thats plugged into it .

A thermostat however will adjust the temp higher or lower and keep the temps where you set them.
My guess is he does infact have a Secret dimmer .

You’re correct. I don’t believe he means an actual light dimmer. I believe that he means a thermostat that cuts voltage to the basking light once a certain temp is achieved.

If he’s literally using a light dimmer...whoa! Don’t understand how that helps.

If you watch his video it IS just a dimmer. But it’s ok, cause it goes well with the oatmeal bedding.
I’m sure the recent import baby uro will do just fine in his new surroundings. After all , he does have a nice stickon thermometer .

I was looking through old threads to find useful information or possibly problem areas/frequently asked question ideas for the upcoming wiki, and I stumbled onto this. I’m... speechless. Simply horrified. As per the final message in the thread, I looked up ’birdboy93’ (I can only presume the 93 refers to the year of birth) on YouTube; his profile lists Occupation: Leopard gecko breeder and Companies: Scales "n" Tails reptiles. Dear god.

YouTube horror: oatmeal substrate, tiny enclosure, and at 2:48, you hear "This is a really nice setup compared to the other ones I have..."
