This is completely normal.

It could be both. Good luck, if you just got him it will take some time for him to settle and get used to you. I got one in January (leucy black rat) and he still tries to bite me every time I go to handle him. He’s under a year old, so I know with patience he’ll tame out.

wierd, i got mine a year ago at about 2.5 feet, now about 4feet, never bit once, i feed it by hand and have actually fallen asleep with it on accident, i woke up and it was coiled around my arm looking around.

many people have problems with them, but it has been the most gentalist animal, i even let my 5 year old brother hold him (with lots of supervision) and even when squished he doest lash out and bite.

so far my favorite pet i have ever had, just be consistent and direct with taming, even if it bites grin and bare it, when it sees when it bites its left alone, thats the way its going to live.

huh, my first post in a year!

 Leucistic texas rat snakes

Hello im new to the site. I was wondering how expencive a male juvinile Leucistic texas rat snake is. I was also wondering if it would be a good idea to keep it in the same cage as my 19in. Female snow corn snake. I want to breed her when shes older and this combination would be REALLY cool looking in my opinion. But she wont be a breedable age for another year and if i got an adult male Leucistic texas rat snake then it would be even more expencive than a younger one. Also does anyone know where one can be bought in brevard county fl.?

No, you would not get pearls until the second generation. The original hatchlings would all be normal looking (het for amel, anery and leucism). It is only when you breed theses together will you get a percentage of pearls. Even some of these will be normal looking but you can also get soem amel pearls as well.

This would be a three year project from the time the first breeding take splace that the poster mentioned.

I’ve thinking i might try a bloodred corn instead. Im only experimenting with tons of ideas though cuz she wont be a breedable age for another 1 and a half - 2 years. I want to make sure i have everything planned for when i breed her despite the long wait.

btw im a girl! XD sorry about the misleading name though! lol

Here is Xaviar, BTW, they can reach 8 ft. This guys mom and dad are 7 and 7.5 ft respectively. My friend has the parents. Texas rats are more nippy than most others. The guy hates everyone.

Not all leucistic texas rat snakes are ill-tempered. Definitely the younger ones can be more fearful and thus a bit more prone to self-defense tactics like posturing and striking. Whenever I pick up a new snake or a snake that might be jumpy and prone to being surprised - I use a snake hook. Its a more gentle approach to be reaching under the snake with a smooth and small unintimidating metal hook than to reach in with a warm hand/arm from above and "grab" a snake. They tend to welcome the hook better and not respond negatively. :)

 Leucistic texas rat snakes

mmmm just a word on this whole debate about leucistic rat snakes being aggressive...my first snake was a leucistic rat snake..and lemme tell ya I LOVE HER!!! When I first saw that pink little worm staring up at me I have to admit i was unimpressed. But now she is a very good lookin lady. I carry her around in hoodie pockets all day. She is curious about anything and everything..and loves to get out and stretch but she has never acted defensive outside of her cage even around our small dog..You have to remember its very unnatural for snakes to be handled and cuddled. Of course they arent all going to like it. And even my girl has days where she obviously doesnt want to be messed with..she starts rattling when i open the cage...forget about handling her that day...you just have to respect that and the fact that they are wild animals..her bad moods have really taught me how to handle cranky snakes though..i guess what i want to say is animals have moods like we do and mine not always being an angel taught me alot..so dont be discouraged by a few bites..patience and persistance

To anyone who cares to read,
Or if you’re considering buying/adopting one...
Leucistic texas rats are one of my favorite snakes.
I have one, approx. 20" or so. Luci, short for Lucifer.
Because when I got her, she was so MEAN!
She still rattles her tail at me, and lets off this skunk-esque smell.
But I love her nonetheless.
I’m also not going to lie and say that they’re easy to handle.
Luci used to be Miss White Lightning, striking at anyone that tried to even go anywhere near her.
I’ve learned through the past few months, that if you
1. Don’t hesitate to grab them, even when they’re in the striking stance,
2. Have patience and don’t freak out when they do bite,
Leucistics can be tamed, and they can be like scaly, legless puppies.
That rattle their tails.
Not to mention, they are GORGEOUS.
And I’ve read in a few places that the "bug-eyed" look on Leucistics is an unattractive trait?
Someone explain that one to me, because I find Luci’s blue bug-eyes quite pretty, actually.
Anyways, I’m done ranting about Luci and her Leucistic fabulousness.

 Leucistic texas rat snakes

Over a month ago I saw one at the local reptile store. My daughter had been asking me for a pet snake for some time and wanted something pink. I asked to hold the snake and it got in a defensive possture and started rattling its tail at the employee. He was afraid to get it. Another had to reach in and get it. It did not bite. I held it and it calmed down right away. Even let me stroke its head. Two weeks later after my vacation I went back with my daughter to pick a snake. She held all the corn snakes and really liked all the ones that kinda look pink but when she saw the leucistic texas rat snake she wanted to hold it. The employee(different guy) tried to tell me it had bitten him 3 times that day and that she shouldn’t hold it. I told him I had held it 2 weeks prior and it was fine. He said well then you take it out. I did, it never bit me. I gave it to my daughter and it never bit her either. She instantly fell in love. The employee asked her "what are you going to do if it bites you?" she said " I’ll deal with it" She is 5 by the way. We took him home. That night her and her brother held it and it was very nice. The next morning I took it out for her, she held it and grabbed behind its head. It tagged her. She was fine, it didnt even hurt her. She kept holding it and has been holding it since everyday. Its never tagged her again or bit anyone. She takes it everywhere around the house, puts it in her pockets and wears it like a braclet. That snake is now as tame as a cornsnake and will let you do anything to it.

The top is me holding it in my hand, the bottom is my daughter wearing him like a braclet lol!
