 New Monitor...weird behavior?

yeah I am just a pain in the a$$ and worry WAY too much. I really hope he pans out and nothing was wrong with him when I got him (seemed somewhat lifeless). Could be a very rewarding experience for me and the sav. Im not gonna be one of those tools on Youtube who eats dinner and bathes with their monitor. So I am going to try my bext to chill out and leave him alone. I know many people say you should not leave crickets in the tank with Spiders, snakes etc. because they possibly stress out the animal or may injure them, but what about monitors? I took out many crickets and left about 5-6 in there and put the rest into another 10 gal tank. Feed 3 times a week correct?

na he isnt hiding, sitting on top of his hide with his eyes open sometimes or closed. Once in awhile I will peek in the room and he is usually just laying there. I think he has eaten a couple of crickets and he has left a couple of urates I found today and removed from the tank. I read all these posts about how skittish and "frisky" their sav. are and this guy seems to be quite the opposite lol. I wish I could have had the opportunity to purchase from a breeder instead of from a store...my mistake. But HEY! Who knows how it will pan out.

sorry i didnt even see your last post. At that age you should be feeding him as much as he will eat. how much has he been eating. I would leave crickets in the cage with him I dont see how that would be a problem. Does anyone else??? try to minimize stress, like you said dont handle him, and if the cat is hanging around the cage that may be stressing him as well.

haha CAUGHT HIM IN THE ACT!! lol I cracked the door to the room and saw him running around the tank going after a cricket lol. Since putting the top on there is ALOT more moisture so it was difficult to see but it looks like he got one. How many crickets should you keep in the tank? Ill prob just keep an eye on it and make sure there are some in there always with readily available food.

Crickets:
As I stated before it can sometimes he dangerous and cause stress for animals, (depending on their size sometimes), my old college roommate has a water lizard? and got a little lizard about 3 inches long and actually had his eyes eaten out by the crickets in the cage. I know with snakes you obviously shouldnt leave live prey in the tank and with spiders like tarantulas (had quite a few, greaterhorned baboon, chilean rose, goliath birdeater). I noticed it does cause stress and they tend to not come out as much, but like I said, those are invertebrates and not lizards, so who knows. Might be ok.

home depot does have the temp gun but nobody who works there knows that they do. i saw it on an end cap then went back to get it and it had moved. i asked everyone and noone knew about it. finally found it in hardware near the tools. made by ryobi works great 30$

also got digital therm. one for each side 7$ each in the outside garden area. home depots the best. if you go to the plumbing dept n get a rain gutter cap cut an entry way it makes a perfect hide. i buried mine under bout 6" of dirt n sand. my sav spends alot of time there. also his basking spot is a rock that doubles as a hide.

im also new to monitors. your set up looks pretty similar to mine. this site is def the best place for good info. good luck

Nevrer leave to many in a cage with lizards, but i have never had a problem with 5 or six as long as there is enough room for the lizard to get away from them if it’s annoyed.another thing you might try is to put a piece of potato in there to keep the crickets from getting hungry and gnawing on ur sav.One of my baby sav’s wouldn’t eat crickets worth a crap when he came in so i tried lobster roaches and he can’t get enough of them so you may try that.I’m new to this site but the info everyone has given me has been awesome so your definitely in the right place for help.Good Luck

yeah he is starting to eat again. I was in therechilling with my kitten and gf, (6 week old kitten from animal shelter) is a little under the weather...really sad right now...but to make a long story short I had a wooden log in the tank and my GF said is there fuzz on that log? and I go umm...I looked closer and noticed that the log had fuzzy mold all over it. So I took the log and tossed it, also noticed some sprouts in the soil from the topsoil...any of you guys remove stuff like that? I knew the fungal/mold spores arent appropriate for the tank, maybe its TOO humid, around 80%

is there fog all over the glass? If so try to make it to where only the cool end has a little mist on the glass at the soil line.

Get rid of the peatmoss and just make your substrate soil and sand. It will fix that problem.
