Is anybody going to post a DIY guide or something? I have noticed many people have asked.

Isn’t that what the first post was all about? The whole process was illustrated with numerous pictures. Anyone with the ability to work with wood, and knows how to use tools should be able to build a quality cage based on the step by step pictures in the first post. If anything is unclear, I’d be happy to go into further detail.
cheers

The base is probably 3/4". It needs to be thick to be to support the weight of all the dirt.

The walls that make up the top half, are thinner, and may be 1/4".

If you’re not quite confident enough to do it on your own, enlist the help of a friend, or someone with skills. It’s worth your while to build a quality cage that will last for years.

 "How To" cages

Here are some pictures of a cage I am constructing for a trio of baby Argus I purchased from Krusty. It measures 8’ long x 45" wide x 5" high. I was limited by the constraints(width) of the room. Fortunately, I can build additional cages as these guys get bigger. The cage actually looks smaller than I thought it would, maybe I’ll have to use it for Ackies. It will easily hold two feet of substrate. I’m going to be building another cage that will attach to these cage and allow for separation. It will be attached via a corridor that I can close or open. These are pictures of the cage skeleton, but I lined the inside with plywood yesterday and will be able to line the interior with FRP this afternoon or Saturday. I’ll post pictures of that process as well. Disregard the ugly room this cage is in. The majority of our basement is finished and remodeled, so my monitors are in the unfinished section and this cage is sequestered in, what was, my workshop. I constructed this cage in large panels so that when we move I can take the cage apart in large sections rather than disassembling the entire thing. I’m presently looking for some acreage to build a cabin and a greenhouse for my varanids. This is just to give you guys another example to look at. Thanks for the design, Shay.

I was fortunate to find a six foot vinyl window two years ago for about $30 at Home Depot. I can now finally use it. You can usually find a good deal in the returned special items section.

I am confident I can do it but I realize their are small steps that people like me would leave out. People who are skilled in carpentry already know all of these "small steps". I just like to make sure I am doing something exactly right. I am planning on doing a 6x3x5 enclosure in a few months.

Rat snake lover,

So you have iguanas, monitors, and an alligator?

Let’s see some pics of all these....and when are you moving to Hawaii? Your bringing all these with you right? On your Dad’s 5.2 mill a year budget.

Roger, I see you found RZ’s wonderful croc forum!!! Ha Ha Ha!! Unfortunately, when newbs take an interest into large lizards, they buy a nile, water, sav, etc. and come on a forum such as this one. Once they experience the lizard and learn that it is not what they wanted-too much work-they give it away, sell it, or it dies. Now, they are lizardless, what are they to do? Find a different large impressive reptile to keep of course!! You can get CBB Gators for as low as $45-$50, and WCs for as low as $25. At these prices what noob wouldn’t buy one immediately? What the newb didn’t realize is that Gators, though generally easy to keep alive at first as hatchlings, grow up....they are double, no triple the work of even the largest of monitors, they are way more dangerous, and they are not as easily handled (not to imply that monitors are all easily handled..heh heh). Thus, rescue centers are packed with unwanted or abandoned Gators, or they are released into the "wild" (your local sewer treatment plant HAHAHAHA!).

Or the newb could totally skip the lizard thing and strait into the crocs..same outcome.

This Rat Snake Lover guy is an obvious troll of the croc forum and it looks like he may be attempting to spread his Sh!t over here.

According to him...
He is 12
His Dad makes 5.2 million $$ a year
He has a three foot gator in a supposed 20,000 gallon tank
And he is moving to Hawaii??? Weird!!
Heres some of the sh!t he’s been spreading:

Shay,

In the first and second pics are you using liquid nails to attach the 2x4s and build that frame or both that and wood screws? By looking can’t tell how to build my ackie enclosure frame so that the window will fit. Those are my only obstacles.

Thanks,
Felipe

only the screws are holding the frame together. the liquid nails was for the FRP.

the best way to make the frame fit the window is to first have the window. Start out by measuring the perimeter of the window, and build the square, or rectangle that perfectly fits around it.

Now that you have your window frame built, you can build the rest of the frame around that. (the window frame should be one of the first things you build; it makes everything easy after that)

I don’t think it really matters. A double pane window has the advantage of being more insulated though. Either way windows are great for monitor cages

Felipe, a casement window is the kind that opens by turning a crank. I doubt that would work very well on a cage. Get a slider. The windows slide side to side on sliders.

Iam not understanding in my drawings how I will actually get the window in there. Iam I nailing it? Liquid nails? Both? Or is it something else complicated? Help is needed. Iam planning on starting my building this friday.

Felipe,
start a new thread and post pictures of your window, and what ever else you’re working with. Being a visual person, it will be a lot easier to offer you advice that way
