 "How To" cages

His cage was already built for a burm Its 6x3x3 He has a small screen part for his lights made from the screen of an aquarium style tank. He was wanting to know if the screen will melt or anything. He Is making a bigger cage in a few months but he doesnt have time now with his new job to build anything. He was just wanting to use a 50 watt halogen flood light on the screen without it melting

No, but the heat might warp it, I know mine has with a 150W halogen flood lamp. And my screen is bona fide chicken wire.

Think 8 pages is fun? Check out the 14 pages on the Bearded Dragon General forum.

way didn’t u just answer my ? all i want to know was if 10x5x5 was to small for them. Right know i have them in separate cages both which are 8x4x4 that i built them last year and that started to rot because i did not seal very well and now i want to house them togetor so that mybe i will have a shot at breeding them next year. So i dont know how is that disappointing to hear if i take real good care for my monitors!

look shay i have 3 baby savanna monitors apart from my 2 adults and i wanted to know if it would be a good idea to build or give them a 8x4x4 cage so that they have a lot of room to roam so that they don’t grow up to be obese just asking. Oh forgot to say they are in the range of 8-10 inches.

Most keepers like to have a raise up cage and an adult cage. A smaller cage for the babies will help you manage the conditions a little better and give you a better idea of how well the animal is eating considering babies are more likely to eat crickets. In addition a smaller raise up cage will get your young monitors acclimated to your presence a lot faster than a really large cage. I would then move the animal to the adult cage after they’ve grown a bit and show that they’re progressing. When they’re full size, offer them all the room you can
cheers

Here’s a cage i built for one of my Burms, not a monitor but maybe it will help someone trying to build a cage.I had no plans, just started building the floor and went from there.Just a box realy.

I am going to make something similar for a monitor at some point,I can never decide what Species i want,I have wanted one for many years but keep changing my mind.I’m only 30,plenty of time left...LoL.

This is the first big cage i have built,I’m sure i could modify it to house a smaller monitor...BTW,the herp room was a mess in the pics,it has since been cleaned and organized after the cage was done.

Jason.

Bump, bump.

Jason - its nice to see that you have housed your burm in a ’proper’ enclosure rather than just a plastic box

Good on you, looks really good too!

The above enclosure could easily be modified for a monitor.

I have found that it is easy, albeit time consuming, to cut FRP with a sharp pair of "snips." I also used a jigsaw, not recommended, cutting one small section at a time. I have also seen people secure FRP to plywood or panels first and then cut. I have had success with that method as well.

I don’t know if it’s the best way, but I glue it down on the plywood first, then use a router with a trimming bit to cut the FRP to the exact shape of the wood. It gets a bit messy, but I get perfect cuts every time

At work we have used a sawzall and it seems to work pretty good but i would recommend cutting it on some wood because its not the thickest stuff and its hard to cut by itself
