"How To" cages Hi Krusty,
How long has the black cage with the sheet linoleum been in use? I was wondering how the top half with the exposed plywood has held up. Thanks.

"How To" cages Just under a year. The humidity to sealed/urethaned wood is not usually the issue. It’s the wood that is exposed to wet dirt/mud all the time that will warp/rot/fail. I have another cage of similar design that is just urethaned wood with a plastic tarp/pond liner type thing holding the dirt and it’s still intact at 3 years (except where the lizards have messed with the edges). It will eventually need maintanance, but not yet. I dug down and removed the tarp and checked the wood a month ago out of curiosity.

"How To" cages Keep this post up here! I love it, I might be doing a cage somewhat like this but larger scale... when I move into my new house in the next few months here.
Cheers,
Chad

"How To" cages Thanks Krusty. I have a bunch of good sized linoleum remnants left over from some jobs. Not all of them are large enough to cover the entire inside of the cages I need to build, so I was thinking of just covering the lower 3 feet and using marine varnish on the exposed upper areas.

"How To" cages My gosh you all have some very beautiful cages. Would anyone Mind if I copied them? If you are building for a Savannah monitor, what should you put in the cages besides hides etc. Should I have things for climbing, as they are not huge fans of climbing? Also I was going to go 10x3x3, would this be good? I have not even bought one yet, but want to have my ducks in a row 1st, so I ma not rushing things when I get him/her.

"How To" cages Just make it a little wider. An enclosure should be twice the length of the monitor, and the width should be the length of the monitor. 3-4 is sufficient for the height.

"How To" cages The FRP is glued to the plywood. You can use construction adhesive (Liquid Nails).

"How To" cages Maybe we could discuss some lighting issues on this thread. I noticed that the basking areas in the cages pictured were high up. I was reading some threads over on KS a while back and some experienced keepers mentioned that they preffered to keep the basking areas lower, just above the substrate for their ground dwelling species. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Roger

"How To" cages Here’s what I have so far as a mid-sized cage for my little water. The inside dimensions are 4’x8’x5’ I cut all the pieces of OSB to size and glued sheet linoleum to them first. I framed the floor and ceiling with 2x4s, 16" on center with bridging in the floor 16 on center as well, to keep the OSB from sagging between the floor joists. To get an idea of what bridging is, look at the bottom of Shay’s cage at the beginning of the thread, it has bridging 2 ft on center. For structural support. I made corners of 1x3, screwed from the outside into the OSB so there is no penetration of the walls from the inside. There is also 1x3 screwed in the same fashion around the sides and back, 16 O.C. as well. I would welcome any critisim so I can make any changes before turning the little bugger loose in there. Tomorrow I should have the electrical installed and running and will post more pics then. Thanks

I some pictures of the cage before the middle section and the windows were framed, but as I was putting them on photobucket while I was working on it the must have gotten skipped.
Roger

"How To" cages One concern Roger. You mounted those ceramic keyless light fixtures directly to a piece of wood? As in, you didn’t put a metal housing around where the wires connect to the porcelin? That is a bit dangerous. Moisture can create arcing from the two poles and it’s directly on wood. If you coated the exposed electrical components with liquid electrical tape or a fire resistant baffle ignore my post, if not - i’d redo that set up for fear of a fire hazard.

"How To" cages Actually there are 2" holes drilled behind the fixtures that I filled with epoxy after wiring it all together. The wiring is more or less hermetically sealed. That is an excellent point you brought up.

"How To" cages Good point indeed. When the connections are inside the cage, it’s a good idea to protect the connections from moisture. I like these all-steel outdoor lights and box. They are listed for use in wet locations. The box is sealed with a gasket and glue was put in the back of the wire nuts. Oh and one more thing, with these type of light hoods, the bulb is protected from the monitors.

Make it higher. Like 4 feet because you’re gonna fill at least a foot of it with dirt.
