Best UVB for 40 gallon breeder tank?

I have a juvenile and I don’t think his UVB is a good one
I read conflicting stories about what is the best UVB out there. I know you aren’t supposed to use the UVB bu lbs in a dome, but the tube and you change them out every six months. Just wanting to get an idea of the best ones to get
Thanks.

Mega ray and reptisun uvb bulbs are the way to go with mega ray lasting longer I’ve read

Is this the good reptisun? There are so many variations on it. I want to be sure he gets enough uvb. If this is a good one, i will order it today.... Follow the link: Link

Yeah just make sure the dragon don’t get really close. But for more info go here the helpful info on this site is the reason why I’m successful in keeping Iggie’s and Australian/Chinese water dragons.

But for a 40gal I think a 10.0 is a lot maybe a 5.0 is better. I used 10.0 in my larger cages because they were 6’ H before I switched to mega ray

there not uvB bulbs... there not even uva bulbs. there called uv bulbs. and they can produce uva or uvb. mercury vapor bulbs tend to be the best producing evreything your dragon needs. heat, uva ,uvb. if ppl are buying UV bulbs that only produce uva or just uvb your gona have an issue... some tubes have both spectrums. some dont. same with bulbs. you really gotta read the description on the box. it will tell you if its the proper spectrum and anything else should be used with it. mega ray powersun reptisun ect are mercury vapor bulbs. they produce both uv and they cost a fortune compared to your lower grade bulbs. tubes are good if you need light in a small space without the heat. if you need heat and light go with mvb., mvb are better then tubes in my opinion. but if you got a small tank its hard to rock the mv bulbs

no 10.0 is perfect. even though they suggest 5.0 for cwds. you will get more life out of your bulb. bulbs last 1 year not 6 months... if your buying new bulbs every 6 months your crazy... i run 300 just in bulbs so that would be very un practical... run that 10.0 for a year then give it another 5.0. from what ive been toold and discussed with ppl at the end of the year the uv rating should be down around a 5.0 so your still good! all that happens is the uv rays become less strong. not like it disappears after a year. i still use my old tubes for plants and some of them are 8 year old producing uv stilll

just go to ecoterra site and look at the spectrum chart if you want the science behind this. they have the spectrum and lumens for all lights and reptile requirements .

what about his uva???? seems like a lot of people on this forum are oblivious to lighting requirements and have forgotten about uva. mercury vapor bulbs are the best. thats usually the most expensive which is powersun’s around 100$ a pop. but u get what you pay for. they pump out a lot of heat though. and uvB and uvA. or your can go florescent tube fixtures.. which im not convinced they alone will produce whats required.. get a 10.0 tube and a powersun 100 watt and you cant go wrong. as long as you can handle that heat.

I use mercury-vapor bulbs along with florescent for ambient lighting and my 6,500K spectrum. May be overkill, but my dragons are fat and lime green. So, something must be right.

yea i think we all should be over killing it. especially if you want plants growing . having plants in your tank is a good way to know if your getting proper uv. once they start dying you need new lights

Mildabeast... you seem very knowledgeable so i want to add to that ...and you can understand and pass it on...i will also give you a link to read more about what i am trying to say ...in case i muck it up

Bear with me , this could get long winded.
if you have a line from left to right ...left being the lowest that is where UVb lives...290-320 nanometers
immediately after 320nm you get into the UVa... reptiles can see this ...but it is still invisible to humans until we get to 400 nm...

So it is a fact that any UVB producing lamp also produces UVA as it crosses into the visible light spectrum...and continues up the scale/ line, for lack of better words.

For example if you were to read the pages at www.reptileuv.com and serarch the sublinks you would see what I saw back in 2006/7...

Another excellent site is http://www.uvguide.co.uk/

with tons of tabs to click and read

Anyway thought i might share that with you so you can carry the torch
