 Shedding

I’ve had my water dragon for well over a month now and he hasn’t shed yet. he’s only about 6 months old and all the research I’ve done says he should be shedding about once a month, but no shed yet...is there something wrong or am i being paranoid?

He looks good ...so he’s eating plenty ....he will shed in due time ...small parts everywhere ...legs ...tummy...back ...head...tail

Sometimes once they get going it just seems like a never ending cycle. I would say just be patient....lol....don’t freak out.

They will get ashen grey or brown ....just depends. Do keep on eye on the toes and spikes for extra moisture and ease of shedding.....sounds like you already know about that

Esaiest way to post picyures ....create a PHOTOBUCKET account free...
Upload pics there and size as you like....
create and save album / continue to album.
hover over image and copy the IMG code
paste it here in your new message
When you preview the message it should show up ....or you need to do it again , right.

He does look good. Very green and very happy. Good job!

Make sure you feed his as much as he’ll eat, you can’t really over feed a baby WD

How often do you feed him? littuns should be fed twice daily with well gut loaded food. they grow mega fast and so need the food to fuel their growth.

Don’t worry about him not shedding yet, he’ll shed when he’s ready.

The missing toe could have been bitten off by a sibling when he was hatchling. It’s actually pretty rare to find a 100% perfect captive bred WD due to the babies all being kept in 1 tank.

He looks good, don’t worry xx

i’ve been feeding him once daily with small to medium crickets but he clears a tub in 3 to 4 days. i’ve also just had mumps and was quarantined to my house for a week n a half! so i got my mom to pick up some crickets for me (which she had to leave outside the front door, knock and walk away in a strange gangster stile drop off!!!) n she got the bigger ones. was a little worried as they’re considerably bigger, but true to his form he gobbles down almost as many as the little ones!

will start feeding him more if he’ll eat it then as i wasn’t sure about overfeeding.

whats the best food to gut load the crickets with? i’ve been giving them grated carrot and a calcium gut load mix from the pet shop.

thanks TD.

Hey raf

Mumps! Ugh! I remember having that when I was very small - it was awful! I hope you’re feeling better mate.

Gut load with whatever you have in your fridge - I usually use carrot, red/orange pepper, lambs lettuice (sp
? I can never spell that word!) or dandilion leaves from the garden. (<-- providing they’re not covered in weed killer of fox of course)

You’ll know when your little dude has had enough to eat, he’ll start to slow down.. then he’ll either close his eyes or just move away.

Weird as in ...

hiding more often,
spending more time in his water,
eating less or not at all,
skitish
doesn’t want to be handled?
rubbing themselves on things in the tank (especially head)

All of the above can happen when WD’s are shedding.

My female Nixie used to spend ALL DAY in her water under the little fountain, and didn’t want to eat as much as normal.

Killer was always in and out of his water. in the water then out under the heat, in the water then out and under the heat, in the water ... you get the idea.

Neon doesn’t like to be held while shedding, where as Killer didn’t seem to mind. Neon is also hiding more at the moment (he’s shedding his face and spikes AGAIN!), but I suspect that is due to the new kitty in the house. Neon does NOT like to be watched while in the bath lol

If your WD is acting differently to any of the things I’ve listed above let us know ...

TD.x.

PS Glad you’re feeling better, day time TV probably made you feel worse!!
I find watching a series on DVD helps. (Red Drawf DVD’s were a life saver when I had the Flu a few years ago )

well he is acting more skitish than usual but he also seems to licking things! as in, he runs up my arm, has a a little lick then jumps off. or runs around the carpet, has a lick then runs off and hides...quite funny at first but starting to think he has some real issues!!!

raf

p.s. red drawf, best series ever... watched the whole thing from first to last episode the last time i was really sick. thats going back a good decade now tho, so might have to break them out again for a watch.

*chuckles* no no your WD is fine. Best I can figure..... When he licks you, he’s saying "I know you" when he licks things, he’s either testing them as food or he’s saying "mine!"

This is mine, that’s mine ... *winks*
It sounds as though he made a lot of things "mine"

He’s fine. funny, but fine.

on a slightly more serious note, how long should a shed last for?

my ig is young so its about a week my water dragon sheds 4x/yr(hes older and not growing) about 2weeks both shed part by part so one day was the head the body but with my is growingso fast he does not stop shedding so if thats what your noticing then its ok as long as the skin is not staying stuck on him, they slow down with the shedding when they are not growing so much

Poison,

If your dragon is eating ...he should grow...when he grows he will shed eventually. The humidity/temps are great ...so no worries there. You will have to be patient....there really isn’t anyway to make the dragon shed faster...unless you feed it more.

If the dragon is eating and not gaining weight you might want to take a fresh fecal sample to a vet and have them do a smear / fecal exam for parasites. Often times a farm raised dragon will have a large parasite load which causes lots of development problems. Almost all Water dragons are wild captive farmed for export. They can have lots of issues when shipped over to retail stores. Those that make it can be loaded with parasites.

A good exotic/reptile vet can do a smear for 15-25.00 and not require an examination in person. Those that want to / demand to see the lizard and charge 60.00 for a first time visit are always out there ...so search around.

Start a thread of your own and post some pictures ...we all love pictures.
