 Reputable Breeders?

Hello,

I was wondering if any one could point me in the right direction for a chinese water dragon breeder in/around Tampa Fl. I’ve done google, craigslist, and phone book searchs and have only found this:
http://www.diamondreptile.com/pricelist.htm#top
Has any body used them before? I find their shipping guarantee very sketchy as they say it has to be below 90 degrees in any given area that the animal is going through. They are located in Bushnell FL. I promise you it only gets below 90 degrees about two months out of the year around here.
I’d also rather pick up, not ship, it just seems to risky to me.

Thank you very much in advance for any help!

RE .... that is a common clause that breeders place in the advertisement...it saves them having to replace dead reptiles in the winter time.... Many folks don’t live as close as you and noobies think they can order anytime of the year. In the East and West where temps drop suddenly overnight disaster can occur.

I never knew how quickly things could go wrong until I read horror stories of amateurs shipping without hot packs...or ice packs depending on the season/ temps.

If you call them and tell them of your location I am sure they would relax a bit and make arrangements.

Be warned ...water dragons are usually farm raised and wild caught...rarely do you find someone selling these as captive bred and born....make sure you see pictures of the exact one you are getting and the diet is talked about so you know exactly what it has been eating, and what it likes. Try to get a guarantee to arrive alive and fat and happy with no obvious visible physical defects.

Just ask tons of questions ... get what you ask for.

What are the differences between wild caught and captive bred?
I’m assuming that the wild caught ones might have more parasites/health problems immediately. Taking something out of its natural environment is never too good either, I understand that.

About the hatchlings in Denver: Is it safe to ship them for such a long distance? Isn’t it really cold there?

Yes, its getting cold here, but not to bad yet.
I have never shipped a reptile before either so I am unfamiliar with what to do. It does sound risky.

I have been very impressed with these folks here:

SHIP YOUR REPTILES

I was all set to have a reptile shipped to me and I was going to use these folks, but the deal fell through. Fed Ex and UPS also offer overnight delivery but you have to get in touch with them and set up an account. And package them yourself and the cost is higher. heat packs are required to insure the critter is warm enough in the back of a truck for X amount of hours.

Farm raised/wild caught is just that ...they are housed at a farm in foreign countries ..typically where they are from...and then a wholesale company places a large order(1000 +)...they mass ship them to the wholesaler ..say in Florida/California...from there they are distributed. Living conditions are horrid and disease is rampant...conditions are nothing like you ever imagined...Imagine the worst pet store...and multiply it 100x...1000x...The ones that survive are the lucky ones ...and maybe just hanging on ...I have seen many overcrowded tanks with the wrong conditions and food items..and sick lil dragons it’s a shame really. Very much like the puppy farms you hear about.

Captive bred multi generational dragons are another ball game ...that would be like J5 having a mated pair ...producing babies and then producing another generation and having a true captive bred clutch many times over....those dragons will be much better health wise ...not wild ...and survive much longer,
raised on proper foods and nutritious greens ...that would be my goal ...to seek out J5 and purchase from him ...or Ursula / Cloud dancer here...on these forums.

Shipping is not that big a deal if you take the needed steps to insure the best delivery. It is done many times by many folks here including me and Edel. We buy the special boxes and styrofoam and heat packs to make sure the trip is safe. in the spring / summer it get’s easier.

J5 since you mentioned it first ...how many do you have and what are you asking for each 1 ??

The pic looks nice on your profile ..I went to see ..I am in Utah ...12 hrs away.

okay, I have 5 total babies, 2 of them are were born on 10/15/09 and the other 3 were born on 11/3/09, to my understanding there is a 90% chance of being female cuz the incubator was at 90.

I will sell them for a very reasonable price, to anybody on this forum because I know they will be going to a good home and a knowledgeable owner. I just fear them suffering with no UVB in a 10gal till they die.

In all honesty I don’t know what they are worth. Make me an offer. Utah would be fast shipping from here.

I’d be interested in adopting from J5, but he’s in Colorado and I’m in Florida. Is that to far to ship? Would that be ok?

I totally suffer from what we jokingly call "first baby syndrome" (I work in a child’s consignment store) where everything has to be perfect, and just right and I freak out about the littlest things with my pets. They’re so my little babies.

J5 ...I could be wrong but I thought the higher temps gave a stonger chance for males ??? I will have to re -read the Gecko info I have somewhere.

I will keep it in mind and as soon as I am done building for the iguana we adopted 2 weeks ago I will see if we can find room for another lizard or 2....I have always loved this species...since the 1st rescue I took in.

Thanks

Veggies are not nearly expensive as the bugs and pinkies you will be buying for a dragon, lol! Make sure you take into account all of the items you will need for a dragon - lighting, gauges, etc.

Clouddancer, I’m not sure if the second part of your response was for me, or for Cphill, so I apologize if it was for him and I’m just interrupting. However, we have the set up ready and all the equipment.

We just lost our WD about three months ago from egg binding. My boyfriend got her from some big pet store deeply discounted because the manager didn’t think it would make the night, BF took Doom to the vet and he said Doom probably wouldn’t make the next couple of months and told my boyfriend it was a boy. Four years later, Doom’s happy as a clam swimming about until one morning he lays an egg. We gave her a lay spot, extra calcium and she would take a little smashed up food from a dropper, everything our vet told us to do. She just wouldn’t lay.

So, sorry for interrupting if it wasn’t aimed at me or anything, we’re just really trying to find a breeder that actually takes care of their babies so we can adopt a healthy little lizard from the get go.

Actually, it was in response to J5dragon who said that veggies were too expensive. Sorry, I am really retarded with this new laptop. I was trying to copy and paste the quote, but crashed instead. I was concerned with someone who might not be able to afford a new dragon.

You are entirely correct about seeking out a captive bred baby. That is more than the right, and informed, thing to do. They usually turn out to be larger, more beautiful, and healthier than their wc or farm bred counterparts.

Cost? Well, for first generation cb’s you can expect to pay about $50 for a baby, and on up for a juvie or adult. (Not much more than the $29 special at the pet store, wc or farm bred.) After that, you are looking at basically the same prices as for awd’s. The reason awd’s have been more expensive is that they are ALL cb, multi-generational. Cwd’s have been cheap imports for the most part. I wish that would change. So many losses. So much suffering, it makes me sad. But, I digress, sorry.

I am a breeder, but nothing to offer right now, sad to say. It is all my fault. I have beautiful multi-generational cb adults, and had beautiful eggs. But, I was so busy that I lost them all. All. Many ppl are waiting to see what Wilbur and Albi’s babies look like; I have a waiting list. But I blew it this year, out of town too often.

And yes, Chris, you are on the list, if you want. Breeding season is coming up, it wont’ be too long now!

lol, my dragons are well fed. And i can afford to keep them well fed. I would love to adopt an Iggy, but feeding them all the necessary foods is a pain in the but and expensive for me. If i didn’t have any water dragons i would get an iguana.
I work at a dog daycare/training facility so I’m no millionaire haha.
