 My poor Iko!! HELP!

I feel so bad I’m only on here when I need something. But you guys are the experts.

Let me start by yes.. I’m trying to get a hold of my vet.. but in the mean time....

Iko’s eye is infected or something. It started with white pus in the corner of his eye & now he won’t open it.. unless he’s been moved too quickly. He sleep a lot too. I’m wandering if it’s a cold or something of that nature.

We built him this awesome new cage, which I think is triple the size of his old cage. Which I believe is the start of my problem. I didn’t think it thru before we started building. We made it out of mesh.. & I think the lack of humidity & it’s ability to hold heat is the problem. I thought it would be ok for a while during the hot summers we get here... but It’s started to cool down here. I’m going to wrap the cage with saran wrap today.. to help hold that all in.. & I have a humidifier going next to his cage. I was told by someone that there are eye drops? Anyone know of anything? Any other trick?

HELP!!! I’m sure you’ve answered these questions before.... but I’m sooo worried about him....

Thanks!!!!

 My poor Iko!! HELP!

hey there i’m no expert on eye problems. but i’ll try my best till someone can come along and add some more into the pot.

Well what are your uvb’s your using? there are certain brands that can lead to eye damage and such. brands are reptiglo 10.0 and uvb compact lights (the spirally ones)

the siran wrap will help lots.

what were your temps before that?

also what substrate are you using? Sometimes people have found that with loose substrate some has got stuck on their eye and they werent able to get it out. and then it caused an eye infection.

There are medicated eyedrops for inflamation, and eyes that are kept closed. though if you are saying white is coming out then that is definitely an infection. ( are whiteblood cells that are rapidly produced to help fight off bacteria buildup).
So i’d suggest you go to the vets and ask for antibiotics.

good luck to you and your little guy! keep us posted.

 My poor Iko!! HELP!

Thanks for the quick response.. there is no substrate.. it’s carpet... so no luck there...

Temps I’m sure are all over the place... with the mesh... depending where he is..

I don’t think it’s the bulb... My boyfriend had one die from that... so I know the symptoms.... so I doubt that’s it.... But I’m sure a new UVB could only help....

Antibotics are probably going to be my best bet! In the mean time... I’ll start with the saran wrap....

Thanks!!

you also can use shower curtains (obtainable at the dollar store) to hold heat and humidity. just wrap the cage up lol...

i didnt think suran wrap would be thick enough to hold in moisture and heat? then again, i havent tried it! good to know...

That is exactly why I recommend against mesh enclosures. Just not a good idea in the long run.

Do you know a mom who might have leftover eye drops from kids’ eye infections? I have used them before, and they work perfectly. Other than that you might try turtle drops, obtainable at pet stores.

 My poor Iko!! HELP!

That eye drop thing is a great idea... I’m just so worried. My boyfriend was looking at him again for me last night... he says it’s not pus. That maybe he banged his eye on something... when he jumps from the top for his food. Scares the crap out of me every time.

I don’t think that’s what it is.. I think it’s like a cold or something.. they seem a little cloudy.

Thanks for the ideas...

As far as the cage.. I was going to do most of it in plexi glass, but that stuff is SOOO expensive for the size cage we built... is there any other see thru alternative??? That keeps in the humidity. The saran wrap is only temp fix, obviously. I think the shower curtains would give him way too much privacy. I like to keep an eye on him.

Thanks for all the great advice. I’m still working on getting to the vet.

 My poor Iko!! HELP!

you can get a clear plastic shower curtain. you will be able to see him. you can use a saline solution to wash out that eye - the kind people use with contacts. can you get us a picture of the eye?

they like there privacy sometimes lol

well a picture would help. you could have gotten something in his eye, or injured it.

is he at least keeping it open? If he was recetly shedding than tht could ne the thing that got into his eye too.

 My poor Iko!! HELP!

I have an appointment for the vet on Sunday!!! I’ll have to let you know what happens! Hopefully he just bruised it. I can’t get the picture, because I have to set up the new computer with it... plus catching it open would be hard.

Thanks again for all the advice. I appreciate it.

I did try just regular eye drops, but we’ll see.
