My new viv!
First of all, I spent a few months perusing CraigsList, until I found the perfect entertainment center. I got it for $50 bucks b/c it had some minor damage. I gutted most of the inside, and ripped a curved arch thru the center boad that I kept. I also ripped a big hold in the horizontal shelf to sink my pond into. I am keeping the underneath open to have a holding tank for my pump/filter. I am building a removable waterfall (foam method) for the far corner next to the pond. Also, I can house the humidifier down there and pipe it directly up.
We ripped out that shelf that my son is sitting on and took out the drawer. I am putting the drawer front back on with a hinge for easy cleaning. Annie came over and helped me make some double doors for the front, and I am keeping the other door that is already there. I still have to stain and finish the doors, and I got some cute handles in the shape of a lizard! |

I can’t wait to see it finished. I am also working on a "new" viv, more like just a topper. It will be much less nice looking than this. :) |

We sanded the jagged edges, and puttied over the spots that needed it - mostly the curved edge. I sanded it down again, and used acrylic paint on the edges - green and brown, using a sponge. Today I started the process of sealing it. I chose a spray Varathane. Diamond Spar Urethane for Outdoor use. Figured that would do it and it is water based. Advertised as low odor, and really didn’t seem too stinky. The can says to use 4 coats, waiting an hour between coats. |

Good beginnings there. Are you going to use that sealent all over the inside? or just near the pool? What are you going to do about UV? are you got to keep the main site lit and leave the pool side a little darker? This is what I’ve done, but I have a colour spot lamp aimed at the water to help keep the water temp up as it gets colder. According to Killer’s vet - WD’s wate temp should be around 24 - 25 Degrees C Hey Mr Green - I’ve found that most snakes like a little climb, so you don’t have to lmit yourself to an arboreal species. I have 2 royals and a spotted python and all 3 likes to climb and explore their tanks. We used to have a Thai Beauty snake (rat snake) and she LOVED to climb .. I think that’s cos she was nosey though TD.x. |

Good point T.D. I will probably use a spot light there too. I finished sealing it - yes I did do the whole inside with 3 coats, and a 4th around the pond area. I even sealed the bottom, although I will use a pond liner as well. For UV, I have a MVB but I am not sure about the fixture that was given to me. It seems old and huge. We’ll see when I get to that part. I am planning on a MVB on the non-water side, which will be the warm side, and spot lights as needed (on the dimmer switch) around the viv. Not sure what to do about night heating - I wonder if I can/should put in a CHE on a dimmer as well?? Any suggestions anyone? It does not get horribly cold here, even in the winter. But this is a pretty big viv; maybe night lights will do it, again, we’ll see. |

I would definately get a CHE ...it would be awesome behind some harware cloth or wire protector ....you could use it just about anywhere centrally located with a 2.00 flush mount porcelasin light holder ...they look like the old fashion closet light with pull chain ...just mount anywhere and I will wire it up...and of course the dimmer is built and in my hands as we speak ...didn’t I tell you ? I mentioned it ...I had the parts 2 weeks ago...lol Chris |

For night heat... Another option, other than a guarded CHE, is ReptileUV’s "heat projector": Link. Not too much heat, but no risk of burning if touched. |
