 Sephira’s tail is dead????

Hey all it’s been a while since I’ve been on. I remember back when a few of you have had this problem and now I can’t remember what was resolved. I picked up Sephira a little while ago and felt her tail and noticed about the last 3-4 inches on the end is dead basically. What caused this and do I just cut it off????? What a bummer to lose the length on her, is this a normal thing for them to go through at times in their lives or something? Please help everyones help is appreciated, thank you all!

Hi Brian,

God for a minute there I misread your title..I thought Sephira was dead!!!!!!!!!!!!..I didn’t see the tail part...LOL....

Gosh with something like this you really should have a vet look at it....Is it hard or soft? Can you post some pics?

Its not normal but is pretty common. Its from a previous injury that had gotten infected and the skin tissue dies off. You cant cut it off yourself you need a trained vet to do it. But that is the procedure. But there are certain areas you shouldnt cut at and sterile environment and you want to be sure you get all the dead tissue gone or it will keep coming back. I heard of a Leoaprd Gecko who had it and they had NO tail left because the procedure was done wrong 4 times and it kept coming back.


But it will keep spreading up her tail, poor thing. Angus (RIP) had the same problem and he ended up dropping his tail and it was gone.

I hope all is well... can you get pictures of it???

yeah the last couple of inches are hard and crispy, I can see where to cut so I won’t hurt her, you can see where the good part of the tail is and begins again. So what do you mean it’ll keep traveling up her tail, how do I stop it/ Is it diet or humidity? I’ll get a pick!

I really really really don’t suggest you do the amputation yourself. Extremely dangerous, and not sterile.

The only treatment is amputation and if its not amputated then the infection part will just keep spreading. Into her spine and cause HUGE issues.
The only way to stop it is the amputation.

But its caused by damage to the tail... either an injury, bad shed, etc.

Read up on the link... it will help.... (it mentions Iguana but its the same medical condition and treatment/information stuff)

i agree with Yex. is it black or just real dry and crispy? the reason i ask, is because little foot’s tail does this once in a while. i just been rubbing mineral oil on it, hoping it will finally shed. the last 2 sheds with him, the tail never completely shed. but i just keep it as moist as i can. he also has a full tail.

i would definitley see a vet on this to be sure what it is. and no doing it yourself lol..

Hey Lela and everyone, long time how are you all? I’m sorry it’s been so long. First my computer went down, then I met a wonderful lady and have been busy with her and now I’m going to move so a lot on my plate lately. Sephira’s tail finally just broke off and seems better now, no more drying up and so on, she lost about 4-5 inches, bummer! She’s been digging again and seems to want to lay again. Sammy is getting big and seems very healthy. I miss talking to you all, I have been checking in and watching from afar, just haven’t been participating as much, but I will now. Thanks for asking Lela I appreciate the concern, I hope all is well with all of you also. I’ll keep in touch so take care.

sorry to hear about Sephira’s tail. glad to hear she’s ok and her tail is doing good though...i still cant get little fot’s tail to shed. weird! but, its ok i think...i hope lol..
