i have 2 water dragons one is male and one is female. they’re both mature for the most part(they’re both over a year old).
everything went good when they were younger... but now the female constantly makes threats and chases the male when ever he’s near the log and the bottom of the cage or and anywhere near it... shes just been very mean and i’m worried that she’s just going to get meaner and meaner... plz give advice i’ve read and researched but nowhere seems to say if females are grumping around mating season or just stressed. plz do help

izzy(the female is like 15") and eddy(the male) is about 17". but eddy is older he should be about 21" but there was an accident and he lost about 4" of his tail. eddy is difinitly male because he has a large crest that goes down from his neck, spine to the tail. with large spines going along. he has all the traits of a male(he’s also about a year and 2 months old).
izzy is about a year old and is small as a female is with small cheeks, a small head, and tail. she’s seems mature. but mean. i only wonder if she is grumpy because she is trying to mate im not sure. ill try to upload a good pic of them together.

Males usually do not begin to show male characteristics of large spikes, crest, jowls, etc. until 18+"; unless they are captive bred. If Izzy is only 15", she may be a he - just without the developed male characteristics yet. If you can post some underside photos of Izzy, we can take a guess at her sex. At 15", she is too young to sex by spikes, etc.; unless, again, she is captive bred.

Are you certain of their ages? Are they captive bred?

2x2x4 sounds to me like a long 55 gallon tank. way to small for 2 dragons. at 17inches i had to build a vivi.

the cage is like 2 ft. long, 2 ft. wide, and 4 ft. tall. and by the way thx everyone for helping out i really appecate it.
im trying to figure out how to get pics on.
i’m not totally sure about eddy or izzy being captive bred, but i got eddy when he was about 3 months old and had him for about a month then i got izzy and she was about 3 months old too. so they are only 4 months apart. i’ve had eddy for about 11 months and izzy for about 9-10 months so yea their each ruffly around 1 year. so the next post i put on will hopefully have pics which will be in 10-20 minutes.

I agree with the others that you need to upgrade soon. You need more length and width; a foot or two of height would also be beneficial. The enclosure you have now is about 120 gallons.

the one i have is brand new i spent a lot of money on it.

as for cages... what would you suggest is a good size for a cage...

The last link worked. I also saw your dragons in your photo gallery - they look good; a very nice green. Though, for a male that is supposed to be 21" STL, Eddy does not look very "maleish" (not very large spikes, etc.). What is his length snout to vent?

If you can post "underside" photos, we can guess the dragons’ sexes, just to be sure that you do not have two males.

A nice sized enclosure is something along the lines of 5’L x 3’W x 6’H, or 6’L x 4’W x 6’H - just as some examples.

You do not have to use links to post photos. Your photos are on this site - while typing a message, notice a link under the text box called "Get Your Photo List". Click on it. Then click "Make Code For Image" under the photo of your choice. Then click "Click Here To Place The Code On Your Post" and then you have the photo on your post.

alright thx. the only thing is i got izzy as a present to my little sister cuz she wanted a girl water dragon and i wonder how she will take the news if izzy turns out to be a male. but on the bright side izzy is also a male name and i won’t have to call her a different name or he. lol but i seriously hope she really is a she other wise problems... =( but ill post some more photos of them. their just kinda crabby from having to take these photos and its hard to keep them still.

Eddy looks male indeed, as Tarkah said. I would guess that he would be smaller than 21" STL if he had his entire tail however, as his spikes are not very large yet.

As for Izzy... He/she does look possibly male... Closer photos with Izzy’s tail lifted would help, as Tarkah said.

You will need to separate them if they are both males. Two males just do not get along - which would explain why Izzy is "bullying" Eddy if "she" is actually a "he".

Well one thing is sure Eddy is a boy.

Izzy is still a little iffy, but maybe its just the lighting but i think i can see "bits" starting to develop..

mmm let me see if i can find my old sexing thread as there were alot of pics there that was really helpful.

If you do plan on breeding there are alot of things to consider. The female should be at least 2 years old before she breeds. Also saved up money in case she has trouble laying eggs and needs to go to the emergency vet. mmm an inubator, a whole lot bigger of an enclosure. All in all breeding and hatching will cost probably double the amount than what you will make selling the babies.

as for a cage i do have a pretty large one that is fairly new but... i think i’m going to need to make or get a bigger one i’m now stumped... and i spent alot of money on this cage...
what do i do, i mean i wanna make a bigger cage but i’m worried how parents will react! =( it’s not so much the money it’s the space and we don’t own this house. otherwise i would trun my closet into a cage and put a large glass window in the middle of the door...
i have a few cage designs, but i’m not exactly rich myself... but i do have an old armoir that might do the trick.
yet i would rather buy a large glass display case like what most people do.
like i said i’m not rich. any ideas on what you did for your water dragons? i love reptiles and my lizards and i’m willing to do all that i can to make a cool cage thats big enough for them.
all i need is a cage or something to put them in and i go from there i saw that one link where everyone put up pics of their own cage and mine is half the size of those so i need to make something.
help plz

Im not too sure about a large glass one. WD’s tend to think they can run through the glass.. even if the cage is big enough. If you do really want a big glass one.. then you should prolly make it apperent that the glass is not something they can just run through.. if that makes sense lol
