 PLEASE help!!! Mouth Rot!!!

Alright, so theres this little petshop in my little town of waxahachie, tx.

Unfortunately, my wife and i noticed a new addition the other day.

Talked to a girl that worked there, a friend of ours. It’s a Chinese water dragon, with a TERRIBLE case of mouth rot. It had been surrendered, and now they are trying to sell it.

Heres the thing. First off, they should NOT be selling that. The manager doesnt even think its mouth rot. he said its normal. idiot doesnt know a DAMN THING! (excuse my language, i dont like the man)

Also, our friend there told us that she had recently puked up all kinds of slimy crap.

Were wanting to convince him to give us the dragon, or even buy it from them, but we dont have a CLUE how to take care of the mouth rot. it looks terrible!

Heres the question. If i could get them to give it to us, would anyone have an interest in taking this dragon? We would be willing to ship it if someone would pay or even split the shipping cost, to someone that could care for it properly. Thats one reptile we dont have yet and dont know about...

PLEASE someone, help us get this poor thing taken care of... It looks so terrible...

ANYONE?!

 PLEASE help!!! Mouth Rot!!!

Mouth rot is treated with antibiotics ...received from a vet ...50.00 visit and 30-40 for meds.
Throwing up could be improper temps for digestion...88-95 F. Or parasites or worse..

Mouth rot can lead to respiratory infections if temps are kept below normal. And humidity needs to be 70-80%

I know it is sad and deploreable ...I wish I could help ...you never said where your at ...

Sure will try. Heres our most recent rescue, our beardie, Lucky.

We have 6 beardies total, know a lot more about them, thats why im looking for someone that knows cwds to get this one.... but heres my most recent...

But this is just the worst looking of our rescues. We also have a rescued cat, that a vet (lucky us, we have a dog/cat vet as a friend, so he checked the cat free), believes has a hairline fracture in a place that is not fixable unless we pay thousands of dollars for surgery. He said its also possibly a pinched nerve, and wait a week and see how hes doing... the cat already seems to be doing better though...

just need help for the cwd......
ill try to get a pic today (were going to the petshop today), and maybe convince them to give it to me, that way if i can find someone to help, we can already have it... i dont know i just want to help the poor thing, but dont know anything about them...

I now the chances are slim but you could call the local Humane Society and report the abuse.

Ask a student vet / tech to take a moment to go see the critter and volunteer some time.

I recently went into a pet store and the owner tried to tell me that the iguana had an abcess on it’s cheek/gum because it had MBD ....I rolled my eyes and began to explain to the guy what was what ...and he then informed me that he was just caring for it for the true owner...OMG

Well...
some sort of good news?

I talked to a girl that works there (weve become pretty friendly with a lot of the girls that work there, being that were in there buying food for all our animals at least once a week (feeding 7 snakes, 6 beardies...) and they get to know us rather well...)

And shes going to try to convince the manager to give it to us. Shes been doing her best to care for it days shes there. But she says its doing awful...

Finners gave me some good info on things to do, besides the antibiotics, so hopefully we can get it and do our best to get it back to health, if thats possible at this point.

One other thing we didnt initially notice though...

Something is wrong with its eye. it almost looks like all around his eye has rotted out... Anyone know what we can do??? let me see if i can get the pic i took posted... its not great, taken with my cellphone, emailing to myself (on a work account), just to put it up...
i need internet at home...

but any suggestions or guesses on the eye thats oozing and he/she never opens?

Hmm..mouth rot and an eye infection...like veruk said, it sounds like mouth rot that has traveled to the eye, which can be very commen with untreated mouth rot. sounds like its been going on for awhile. This dragon is going to need major antibiotics and probably eye drops. Sounds pretty bad. I think cleaning out the mouth as I mentioned to you will help a bit, but he is going to need some major antibiotics...poor little guy.

ok its been a while. but i must say, we have doctored him a few times with the iodine and water. and even just the few times, he looks so much better.

we have been working on his eyes, mostly with just water and qtips. gettin the CRUD off it. and he does try to open them. one opens, and has all kinds of crap over his eyeball. like layers of crud and . we do what we can to clean it off, but hes not a huge fan, obviously. now get this, it appears that he doesnt even HAVE an eye under his other lid. whne he tries to open it, you cant even see the eye. you see the crud and all, but it looks like there is not another eye.... not entirely sure. we have a filter in a cat litter box full of water, so its basically a mini-pool. he doesnt swim, obviously he cant see, but he will move back and forth from half in the water (we have a slate rock laid crooked where he can get in and out), and out to a log next to it, and back in... so hes moving around, and was puffed up tonight... a beautiful dark pinkish red has started to come out on his throat..

he wont eat still, but we gave him some jumpstart, and he took it alright. weve done what we can on his mouth thus far, just continuing to do it cuz its looking great...

ok let me try and get some pix on. and maybe yall can help me from there...

OK Keep in mind, this is from when he was at the petshop. we have him now, but i dont have updated pix yet. youll see one of his eye, but thats the one you can see, and when he used to be able to open it. about a week or so before they gave him to us. now he wont even open it....

This one is the enclosure he was in at the pet shop -- little bitty with NO WATER for him to get in. idiots didnt realize WATER DRAGON meant he needed WATER. were trying to shut them down...

What substrate did they have him on? There was one at the pet shop I worked at that they had him on bark and the bark got stuck in his eye and it looked a lot like your little guy’s eye.But luckily with some turtle eye drops,a bunch of sun,and some calcium he went back to normal and could open his eye again.I haven’t been able to go back to the pet store yet to check on him but with any luck he’ll have been sold to a good home.

Anyway, you could try the turtle drops and see if they work.Otherwise it sounds like he’s in good hands with you.I hope you can help him.

Wow. He looked terrible!! I’m so glad you were able to rescue him. I feel so sad for the poor guy. That was no way to live thats for sure. He is so skinny! I just don’t get how someone can think that is allright for an animal to look like that? Even if you werne’t sure of what they looked like, commen sense says it all! Goodness.

Good for you for taking him in and helping him get better. He must have a will to live or i’m guessing he would have died before now. Can’t wait to see updated pictures of him. Keep it up. :)

When I got Pearl she was almost as bad as your guy. She had eye trouble to. And with all the crap in her eye we thought for a few days maybe she didn’t have one in there...we used turtle drops to flush the eye...used a q-tip to open her eye and just flushed with the drops...Pearl wouldn’t eat when we first got her either. I began putting yogut on the end of her nose or when she would open her mouth at me to warn me away I would slip some in, it helped to get her eating again. She also had a bad case of MBD so we just about fed her cal. Today she is so much better. She just laid for the first time. And she uses her eye with no noticeable trouble. Her mouth isn’t prefect but she hasn’t lost any snout so I count it as a blessing. I used triple antibiotic ointment with out pain reliever added. I also use a cream from the vet. I wish you well with your guy and wanted to tell you it is so worth it. You’re doing an awesome job. Please keep us updated

dont have the money at this point to take him to the vet. :-( the petshop wouldnt pay for him to go to the vet either. i told britt we needed those turtle eye drops! im definitely gonna get them now and try that. his gums were bleeding last night when we did the qtip with iodine. is that bad? and he still wont eat... we tried to put some food in his mouth and get him to chew it up, but that didnt work... so we crushed up some crickets with some water and fed it to him with a syringe... it was all we could think to do at the time... at least it gave him something... should we mix some plain calcium powder with water and give him that with a syringe too?? we were debating, but didnt know...

he tried to open his eyes last night when we were doctoring him... yeah, one of them looks like it doesnt have an eye, but we were lookin hard last night, and you can tell its just behind all kinds of stuff. well definitely try the eye drops. he sure has some fight in him though. he lets us do his eyes with no problem, but he hates his mouth being messed with. were afraid its hurting him. :-(

but he doesnt tail whip us, just pulls away and runs, basically. so were excited hes got some strength to him.

i took some updated pix last night, and you can see a little difference in him, ill try to post them on later today, i go into work here shortly, gotta go get some nicotine before i go in! lol.
ill do it on my lunch around noon probably. or my break, or my other break... or after work...

either way. ill get them on later.
thanks for your thoughts and prayers, ill continue to keep yall updated!!

oh and we forgot to tell yall-- hes been named. KAHN. (or was it khan?? ...i dont remember...)

khan really needs to be on antibiotics. call the vet, make an appointment and after the visit, you get everything ask them if they could please bill you. do something so you can get some antibiotics into him. he’s in bad shape. he doesn’t want his mouth messed with because its painful. cleaning the gunk out is a start. bleeding gums is not a good sign it means he is vitamin deficient, etc. don’t over do the vitamins or its just as bad.

to feed him, get some organic baby food. the little jars are around 50 cents. i have had success with a mixture of veggies/turkey mixed with Odwala micronutrient drink. i found the odwala where the veggies and fruit are in the food store.
*** http://www.odwalla.com/Products.jsp *** here is the link to find it in your area. i mix the veggi/turkey baby food with a little bit of the juice so that its still thick and feed it to my lizards. the micronutrient drink is chock full of veggies and fruit. they also have a high protein drink. this way you will get loads of nutrition into him. you will have to use the syringe to administer. i am pleasantly shocked by how much this mixture improved my lizards general health and their skin after only one feeding. (i gave it to jing jing who is having a really nasty shed and is so miserable she won’t eat - the next day she was bright and lively; the shed that clogs up her nostrils even came out 2-days later! i’m giving it to her every other day, but in your case you should do it daily even if he does start eating on his own).

this is my sweet baby - Ting Ting. the shelter sent me these pictures to see if i would really adopt him. all that stuff in his mouth is dead bone. he doesn’t have teeth, the mouth rot was so bad it just melted everything. i have some chlorohexaine solution that i use to clean out his mouth everyday. i put silvasulfadine around the gum line - its an antibiotic cream. neosporin messes up their GI system.

i don’t know what to say about the eyes except what your doing is okay, but anitibiotic eye drops would be best. that other eye that you thought was missing may have to be excised.

this is just me, but i would go see the vet right away and explain the situation of your finances to see if some sort of payment option can be made or if you tell them you got him from the pet store like that (there are a number of consumer rights and animal rights issues that have been violated by selling an animal in that condition)

i think he’s in good hands now:-)

Everyone is cheering you and your lizard on ...I want you to know that the advise here is exceptional and if you have trouble finding something ....just ask and we /I will be happy to steer you to a website or product line...

Yes do add a small amount of Calicium Carbonate and mix with the slurry / food in the syringe.

Note* I have made batches for refrigeration and I see the calcium turns the slurry black if kept over 24 hrs. Therefore make the smallest batch and do not re-use.

Or at least keep seperate until needed.

Many items in baby food jars are suitable for feeding ...fruits, make a great treat, are not hi in calcium but some of the squash’s and and vegtable items are loaded ....look at the ingridients label.

Calcium every other day ...there are two types of calcium , one with d-3 and one without (pure)

Please make sure the calcium you purchase has NO phosphorus (phosphorus free)

If you have a UVB light , hopefully a tube , and not a compact , do not use Calcium with D-3.

If you have no uvb light Use Calcium with D-3

If you use calcium with d-3 do not expose to natural sunlight or UVB rays from a tube/bulb.

I have used the free syringe available at any pharmacy just for the asking...

I also use a soft tooth brush to aid in cleaning my lizards mouth ....if I have too I wrap in a towel and suspend all movement. Very gently and lovingly I will brush the lips and eventually I can get to some inner gum and teeth....

Betadyne solution mixed down with water is great for wounds and infections ...however I do not know if it is OK to use orally.

For the eyes a Walmart brand SALINE solution works great

I hope you are successful

Best Regards
CP

we havent gotten the money to the vet... unfortunately, i myself am currently experiencing some issues with a prescription im on for the rest of my life, just hoping i dont have to pay any extra for something that stops my reactions to it.... its an expensive prescription in itself... but we’ll definately find out. a friend told us of a vet near us that supposedly takes like any animal. were hoping it works out. ill definitely call them and see about a payment plan option...

and to clarify, the petshop did not sell the animal to us. although they had him on the floor to sell initially, we are well known in the petshop and after harrassing them for about a month about him, they finally just gave him to us because they were going to just let him die. luckily, a few girls in the petshop were hand feeding him crickets every day or two, because they didnt know what else to do. he would eat them when they offered them by hand, but since he was unable to open his eyes, thats the only way he was eating, and only when one of the two girls were there (which by the way, were terrified of crickets and bugs, but did it for him...)

like i said, ill call the vet and see if we can get something worked out, i know vet visits arent cheap with reptiles, im just hoping theyll help us out somehow... being that we dont know what else to do and adopted him without even knowing a lot, just relying on yall, because we realized how bad he was and nobody else would do it...
sorry guys, britt never got back on today.. must have been busy at lunch. i know work is terrible busy for us both right now (we work at a call center, so were on the phones all day, our breaks are barely breaks lol)...

anyways, thanks again for all the info guys, well see what we can do..
also-- is regular saline solution better than the turtle eye drops?!

thanks SOOOO much guys... were just a couple kids who love our kids lol. we really appreciate the experience... you have no idea.

I don’t know if turtle drops have any thing special in them ...I do know saline solution is some what inexpensive and comes in a much larger container for the money ....compare oz to dollar value ....

Also call the vet/s and see if they will work something out ....trade a sunday working in the kennels / cleaning the floors / volunteer / let them know that you are desperate and need serious help .

Phone advise from them is free....they are usually willing to give it . Call more than 3.

Contact a local college that offers vetinanry classes and get a student to assist ...challenge or beg them to find a morsel of compassion ....they are probably looking forward to finding someone like you for a research paper or thesis.

Just my 2 cents

ive heard of a lot of people on here using the turtle drops. they always suggest it. though, ive personally havnt had to so far. but, i think CP has a good point about the saline being in a bigger container and cheaper...and at least you know its steryl. not sure how pricy the drops are...

your just trying to clear the eyes right? if so, id go with the saline, as you can use it for other things as well and on other pets or whatev...but, still try to get an appointment when you can, just in case its a bad infection and you need actual meds. gl...
