Surprised you didn’t post a picture of a DOR, you know flat and unable to hold itself up.
Sounds a bit more familiar right?

no, definitely not the smartest thing to do. Why would you do that? so that you could look cool? because its not. I am sure that a lot of impressionable people visit this site that may one day try that and end up in a hospital. That cotton could have EASILY bit you if it wanted to and then it would not be "cool" would it?

How could it have bitten him? There is a good 2 feet between him and the cotton. Cotton looks about 3 feet, strike distance of a foot at best.

if you think that that cotton could not move 2 feet before that old man tries to get up (and dislocates his hip in the effort), then none of you have been herping long enough. I have seen cottons move like you would not believe.

from that angle, the hook is not going to do him any good and he knows it. and yes, I am experienced with hots. I was the assistant curator of the natural sciences at the museum of science and history for several years where i cared for quite a few venomous, I am licensed to have venomous in FL, I have been trained by the best zoo program in the states (and most likely the world) and I am currently working on my PhD in herpetology at the university of FL. any questions?

and just as I have said, you really are an idiot that thinks he is some hot hamster brain. I work plenty out in the field as well as with captives and i think that I am more than qualified to say that cottonmouth WAS close enough to bite you before you could get up. anyone that is dumb enough to dispute that will probably fall victim to the "survival of the fittest" or in this case, the smartest.

I am just not okay with people posing with snakes just because they think it is cool. these animals are dangerous and need to be treated with a little more respect than what you have shown.

This is a no name calling forum so leave the anger for somewhere else. Apparently you still have not looked well enough at the pic to see how far I actually am from the snake but 40 plus years of doing this and still alive must mean I am winning your "survival of the fittest" theory..LOL LOL

I did not know you could get an associates in zoology. I don’t think schools offer Associate degrees in zoology. They usually offer a more general major such as Science. You would then have to go on to a university to major in zoology to earn a Bachelor degree

all of the course work was tracked for transferring into a zoology degree so the focus of the course work was zoology. I also enrolled in the "Zoo animal Tech" program which will give me a non transferable degree in zoology once i finish.

as a side note, i have noticed that every time I point out a flaw in Sr.’s posts, the focus is immediately switched back over to me. I think he knows he is wrong here but is trying to hide it. by attacking me. Just an observation.

20. is every one happy? I am 20. As i have said before, that is the youngest age anyone could get their VRC permit in the state of FL since it requires you to be 18 to work with them plus 2 years experience (or 1000 hours) before you get your permit.

a few simple yes or no questions for Sr.

1) could that snake have gotten within striking distance before you could have gotten up from that position?
2) are there impressionable people that visit this site?
3) did you pose with this snake for the sole purpose of being cool and/or to make a horrible joke about your penis size?

hmmm, so you are experienced with hots. also the assistant curator impressive. so you cared for the hots there for several years? but you are 20. so does that mean you where working there with the hots before you where 18? you already have an associates degree and have done all this at 20 years old congrats.. lets see some pics of you at work at the museum. if you have any.

sure thing mate. this picture was used for a pamphlet that the museum handed out, you can also see more pics of me at work in my other thread while I am working with Tonca, the large ally snapper. The insignia that you see on my shirt stands for Museum Of Science & History (MOSH). need any more proof?

again, I don’t understand why people are attacking me when the real conflict is being ignored... I think that I have proven myself qualified to say that what Sr. was doing was not safe and could have lead to a bite. EVEN IF he still claims that it WAS safe (which it was not), there are people that visit this site that may attempt a similar pose with disastrous consequences. if you want to risk your life, go ahead but I will laugh when i get to say "I told you so"

Regardless of what they say Chris, even this guy Jeff acknowledges your concerns in the name of his post "not the smartest thing to do" He knows even after all his years of experience that it was not smart and whether he wants to admit it or not, it was not responsible to post a picture that novices could get the wrong idea on how to handle hots properly. Period. All parties have valid points if you could all get past the chest thumping. The ’attacking’ is probably caused by the tone of your first post. Quite frankly you attacked first buddy. A little more tact in the future on your part and I bet your point will be well received. Fair enough?

Not to beat a dead horse here, but, for the most part, Chris H., I feel you’re a bit too big for your britches there, killer.

First off? If "impressionable" people come onto a general access site and decide that something is a good idea when they lack the experience to successfully determine otherwise? That is truly their own damn problem. If it was not? Well, shows like "Jackass" and a variety of others would have been sued numerous times, despite their disclaimers (which Jeff DOES have with the title ... clearly), and ripped from air before they can make numerous seasons and two movies or more.

Second, I would like to do a little math formula for you that confuses me. You claim to be twenty. That website of yours has a posted blog that states "Hello everyone, my name is Chris Hartmann and I am currently 16 years old and am working on getting my venomous snake permit which allows me to keep and handle venomous (hot) snakes." and it was posted on September 14th of 2007. Now ... I was never GREAT in math by any means, but I’m pretty sure that being as we are in 2009 that makes you 18, not 20. Which, at most? Makes you a Freshman in college unless you graduated early. But I won’t sit here and waste my time in poking a stick in the holes in your story.

Third, I would like to add that your opinions are your own and this man clearly has a passion for something he has been doing for numerous years. He knows what he is doing. If he did not? By Darwin’s own admission and by your suggestion of such, he would have either died, lost a limb to some form of necrosis or encountered other complications due to human stupidity and venomous animals. If it bothers you so much? Stop looking at his posts. He admitted it was not the most intelligent thing to do, but he was still aware of what he was doing.

Finally, don’t come onto a forum, bash someone in more or less words for what they are or are not doing and expect everyone to praise your incredibly intelligence and practicality. You take yourself a bit too seriously and need to lighten up. I’m glad you have something you can be so passionate about, truly, but your approach to "educating the masses" is seen as bullheaded, arrogant and unwarranted. You think the first people to mess with veneomous animals in order to understand them better had thousands of different texts and various resources at their disposal? No, they did not. They learned by doing, either the hard way or by sheer luck. You stick to your books, learn what you want and let people who are seasoned and veterans in this field do what they do. They are not looking for your approval or chastisement. Shocking, I know.

That’s my piece. Jeff, never really commented before, but always enjoy your herping photos and your stories. Keep it up.

-D
