 Vine snakes

Im just curious and cant find much on google about there care. Are they a good starter for a noob to venemous snakes? Can I handle one {as in they look so fragile, is it ok to handle them?} And do any of you have one and can tell me about them?

Im not ready to go out buying a dangerous animal, I just want my info BEFORE I decide what to get.

I think Deadvenom-x has a vine snake. You could PM her.

Firstly, there are different species of vine snakes, mine for instance is from the general India/Indonesian area. Not really a reptile to handle like lets say, a boa but it definitely will not kill you. They do eat lizards ravenously(sp?). They are strictly arboreal from my experience and need high humidity, though can live in dryer enclosures on a small scale time to time (being from india, what can you expect in the dry season?) they do not drink from bowls, only when being sprayed or off of leaves. all in all, they are very cool snakes.

The south american variety however, I cannot help you on that.

sorry tried to message you but the site was locking up :(
its the common vine snake i was looking into. we have boas and pythons {also had kings,corns and a few lizards till i down sized} i had hoped to find a vine snake or a parrot snake {wich i found out is not to great in captivity so thats a no go as well}
i think the one i saw at the show was a common vine. and i have no idea where that one would be from....the seller was not real informed at all {plus i think it was a wc snake, the guy was NOT real sure who he got it from}
thanks for what you know. at least now i have a starting point to google more info. also would you recomend a vine as our first hot? and all it eats are lizards? no pinkys at all? very cool indeed

lol.. common vine Snake does not tell me anything to be honest.... I never heard that before. Look up "Oxybelis" aka South American Vine Snake and "Ahaetulla" aka Indonesian vine Snake.. that is just the genus though. both genus are lizard eaters as most arboreal colubrids are to my knowledge. about 99% of all Vine Snakes in general are Wild Caught, so no point in looking for a CB really.

As for a good first "hot"... hard to say they are rear fanged, but they rarely bite (being that I only have experience with Ahaetulla.. so I am assuming its that) and if they bite, its nothing but a mere scratch. they do stress a bit easily, so definitely not one to always handle.. but providing a nice decorated naturalistic set up, you will have no problems at all. More space, the better for a vine snake.

awesome pics! thats exactly what we saw at the show. the snake seemed real stressed out and aggressive tho. {then again he had it in a tiny see thru container and every picked it up}
now as for the lizards are the anoles? i can get them dirt cheep at the shop we get feeders at. also would a tall or long tank be better? {i assume tall since they seem to be in trees alot?} now the silly questions lol. how much should one cost me and where can i get a healthy one from? do i need any permits? {im in KY,USA,, and cant really own the kinds id like to have} and would i need an anti venom or is there venom more like a scorpoin sting?
i am full of questions

lol! Where to start. Anoles or house geckos are good... If youread what I wrote previously, the bite is no more then a mere scratch. So no, no antinvenin. Though, I would not get one if you are under the age of 16. Tall and long is good... they use all the space they can get. Best check your laws for what you need... i doubt you need any permits though. I was bit tday actually trying to "fish" out a gecko from his enclosure.. he lost it in his enclosure (being its full of plants) and he mistakened me as the gecko.. nothing happened though. :)

lmao...well you you smell yummie! And no worries, im 28 {29 in a few weeks} I have a 9yr old whos in love with snakes. he knows if we get a vine its off limits to him. Oddly i cant find crap on KY state laws. i cant own the normal hots {cobras and vipers} but its unclear on other species.
now as for anoles...easy to breed your own or better to buy? I can get them for 2-3 bucks a piece {about like mice...rats are more...breeding time!}

I highly doubt laws will be an issue.. as for anoles... I find buying them to be easier.. I have been unable to breed them. Though, if you do get anoles, buy them in bunches so you can get them up to par in health. Alot of feeder anoles are in dreadful conditions and wouldnt even be a morsal for the vine snake. So a few weeks of feeding anoles to fatten them up should be good :)

LOL that was funny.
And we did have that idea as well. get maybe 50 anoles, feed them good and keep them a while then get the vine snake. Now is 50 enough to start with? And how many anoles will a baby vine eat? {we would like to have a baby if possible} Also we hope to switch all our snakes over to tubs soon. the tanks are to bulky and a pain to keep humidity up. what size tub would a vine need as an adult?

and i swear google is uesless at times. care sheets for a vine are almost impossible to find!

ahhh dont get a baby. You will onyl be able to feed babies.. baby anoles.... Stick with an adult. as for Anoles..you will need a biiiig cage or at least multiple.... i put 3 anoles per 10 gallon. If to many, they will die from stress. Plus you will need UVB for all of them.. so plan ahead.

Tub + vine snake..... noooo. please. no. Think of them as a display animal. LOTS of greenery and branches. Naturalistic enclosures are the way to go with them. they are strictly arboreal. If possible, buy a large flexarium and you can put a small tree/plants etc in them. I feed my vine snake every week.. though, they will eat nonstop if allowed.

Vine snakes are Indonesian (the ones we are speaking about) so keep them at about 78-86F and humidity can drop every now and then.. but keep it around 70-80% when possible. Mist them every day since they onyl drink when it "rains".

ok i have a lot of things to plan for lol.....
if all goes well im swaping my balls to tubs this month. so i will have 2 50 gal tanks {one is empty the other has a 5ft boy in it. he has losts of stuff.} a ton of 10 gal and a few mesh tanks {the lizard kind? not sure what they are called but the shop gave them to me}

saddly i think my vine snake plans are on hold atm. i just recived a female ball whos owner is now in jail...for no less than 15 yrs. shes a mess :(
good news is she was free and i know how to fix her. so vine snake may have to wait. just gives me more time to get all the things i need!
