She loves getting sprayed and she had a bit of an accident in her enclosure so I hosed her and then the set-up. It is not smart to handle them the way I do and don’t recommend it but as for me;It’s par for the course..

oh okay. i wasnt sure if you were giving her a drink or hosing dirt off of her or what.

do you handle all of your hots like that or do you only do it with certain individuals that you feel comfortable with?

Certain ones for sure and that is actually a very good question. I would never do that with pit vipers....

I consider free handling extreamly unessesary. Regardless how "cool" it is. While it paints a pictuer that these animals arent as bad as people make them out to be, We as a venomous keeping community should not let the pubilc veiw us as irresponsible. Which is exactly what the majority of the uninformed masses will think when they see these pics.

People fear that which they dont understand and they hate and seek to destroy that which they fear.

Im pretty much undecided when it comes to the topic of free handling your own animals with out the public veiwing such things. What you do in your free time is no ones concern but your own. But when you make images like these public it tends to rub people the wrong way. I know plenty of free handlers that know what they are doing and have never been bit and i know people that shouldent be keeping venomous in the first place and have been bit useing hooks. It all comes down to how outsiders veiw us as a whole and if we intend to keep our right to keep venomous id suggest that we keep these things to ourselves.

You make a valid point but on the flip side and something you pointed out is people may actually see that they are not evil creatures but like most wildlife, placid and easy going unless molested..Some folks will look at these pics and say, Huh, I would have thought that the cobra would go crazy and kill him..It’s all in how one looks at it.

thanks for answering my question. thats what i figured from talking to some other hot keepers about the temperaments of their different snakes.

i think these kinds of pictures are both good and bad...

i would have never thought you would be able to stand there holding a cobra and spray it with a hose without ending up in a hospital bed. i think pictures like these show the haters that these kind of animals dont go around looking for people to bite and kill. they are just another part of nature that is misunderstood.

i also think that the pictures could give some people the impression that anybody can go up to any hot snake and handle it like this and that they arent any more dangerous than a garter snake.

i think there is a fine line between making people understand these amazing animals for what they are and making people overly comfortable with them and not take them seriously.

by the way, so that you have some idea of who your talking to. im 16 and am very interested in all types of herps including hots. i would like to work with hots one day but i know that at this point i am no where near experienced enough to actually work with them so i just research them and regularly read these forums getting info.

i have very little training with hots, but i am hoping to continue that training to get my hours up,the man who started training the day i handeled for the first time, free handeled an albino cobra, but before reaching in to get it,he told me and my brother both,if he ever caught me free handling any venomous,he would kill me himself,he was only doing it because he knew that animal,he knew the limits with it,and he had the expereince to tell when he went to far,,,,,and i have to agree,if you have the experience with the animal, and know its limits,it can be done

I wanted to send you a personal message and ask some specific questions but this site won’t allow it being that I am a brand new member, as a security measure. 4 or 5 days before i will be able too... Post more pics of you and your babies... never seen anybody handle a cobra like you... Aren’t you scared?

i agree that it also shows that venomous snakes are not out to kill people, but how much good will it do when the person free handling ends up getting bit. what if they die how would that look to the public they would think the snakes where still just as dangerous. i have never free handled a hot i really dont understand what benifit it has to the keeper or the animal, i have tailed young cobras and not had a hook in my hand but thats as far as i would go, but the gaboon is just crazy lol i use to talk to a guy that free handled gabbys and held baby king cobras in the palm of his hand, he said he wouldnt do that stuff again. no one can tell a person how to handle hots, if a person wants to free handle its up to them. here are few hots i have

puff adder

gaboon viper

moroccan cobra

black and white spitting cobra

suphan cobra

wow that is an amazing gaboon, is it for sell lol. thats good that you dont free handle but letting someone free handle your snakes would not be something i would do. if a friend of mine took a bite from my snake i would feel responsible and if that gaboon bit someone i would bet the person would not live through it. awsome snakes tho.

Well i had a good reason to let him handle the big girl she needed to be checked for babies as i thought she was possibly gravid. So its nice to have a crazy free handler around in cases like that! lol. Im pretty confident in my friends abillitys when it comes to these animals. He was my mentor in a way and has been doing this for over 20 years and has only been bit once in the face by a venomoid sri lankan cobra. Which ironically enough im picking up in a trade today. I really dont like venomoids but im not one to pass up a breedable pair of Naja naja in a trade lol. But you are right about the responsibillity part i would feel bad if he was bit by my snake.

Well I am kind of a bird brain... my best friend called me that once and it cracked me up and it just kinda stuck.... So where are all these snakes from anyway? If you have got a minute can you go down the list of pics and let me know one by one where these snakes come from. I am gonna ask alot of questions but if it ever gets to be a pain, just let me know.

Id sell you some of her babies! lol. Im not willing to give up my big gaboon. She is my favorit snake in my collection. But yeah if my friend got bit the only thing i could think of doing for him is cutting off the appendage that he took the bite on. As bad as that sounds its will be alot better then rotting off and taking the chance of him dieing. Then maybe he could get a snake hook for an arm or hand. LMAO! If i ever have to get an arm amputated thats what im going to do for sure.

Birebrain- The gaboons and puff adder are from Africa. The monocled cobras and the black and white spitter are from asia. And i think but am not positive the Morrocan cobra is from africa.
