 Atheris chlorechis

Not much is known about their venom except that it is strongly hemotoxic, causing pain, swelling and blood clotting problems. Until recently, their venom has often been regarded as less toxic than that of many other species, perhaps because bites are uncommon, but this turned out not to be the case. There are now a number of reports of bites that have led to severe hemorrhaging. One case was fatal.Atheris-specific antivenin does not exist and antivenins meant for bites from other species seem to have little effect, although Echis antivenin has been reported to have been of some help in a case of A. squamigera envenomation

For the first question, they are nothing like a hogose. You can’t get bit. The owner knows their stuff too. Echis AV is about the only thing right now that is thought to corss over to them. And Echis AV is certainly not the easiest to obtain.

That is a beautiful snake. We have a chlorechis too and I love it. It is not the best feeder, but still a snake worth keeping around. I used to want to have an arboreal viper museum before I developed my Latin American focus.

Your snake looks amazing...any extra feedinf tips lol : ) I can get ours to eat...but gosh is it a pain.

Mine is also a real picky eater. The best thing i can do is leave live in his cage over night. I also think keeping chlorechis (and most arboreals) in a cage that is much to large for them will turn them into panzys and they dont eat well. Ive had this happen to me several times with my arboreal species i made the mistake of putting them in a cage too large and they stoped eating.

Thanks for the kind comments.

 Atheris chlorechis

There are at least two case reports of Atheris bites treated with antivenom which is not specific for the genus Atheris (SAIMR Echis carinatus I could not find a reference for which species this antivenom was allegedly used to treat and Aventis-Pasteur Fav Afrique to treat an Atheris Chlorechis envenoming). The resolution of symptoms and survival of the patient in no way indicates that these antivenoms should be recommended for treatment of Atheris envenomings. It is interesting but requires further investigation. One incident makes a nice story, multiple documented iterations are needed.

It’s beautiful. The eyes are the coolest I’ve seen on any snake. I’d love to own one. Thanks for the pics.
