My new pair of Ottomans. I wonder how many of these are in captivity? http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b50/bittenonce/Picture310.jpg

Montivipera xanthina (Vipera xanthina xanthina), Northeast Greece and Turkey. Are they captive bred?

sorry to dig up an old post, but i had to comment. these guys are the only venomous snakes on my dads home island of Xios, in Greece, just off the Turkish coast. they are beautiful animals, and the last time i went even though i spend some time looking, i could only find them as roadkill.it did have to do with the locale, i was in the southern part of the island, very hilly but much fewer mountains. supposedly they are much denser in Volissos and the towns in the more mountainous northern pine forests of the island. nonetheless, very cool to see in a captive setting. Greeks have an interesting relationship with snakes historically we revered the, presently it varies. from what i recall lots of villagers feared and killed these guys, but other rat hunting species were kept around. my dad told me they were referred to in greek as "oxendra". its a great island to visit, not too touristy with huge amounts of historical appeal and natural beauty. also interesting, one of the ancient names for the island was Ophiousa, meaning roughly island of snakes. Ophis meaning serpent in ancient Greek (where combined with fobia, Greek for fear, you get ophidofobia)
