Snake George reptile Park - Paphos
George (I cant remember his real name, I think its Hans) George has made two particular discovery’s in the past worth noting. First he re-discovered the Cyprus grass snake after it had been thought extinct for nearly 40 years. Secondly he proved that the most venomous snake on Cyprus, the blunt nose viper lays eggs, other than bearing live young as it had been thought and apparently pr oven. I happened to have the privilege of meeting this amazing man. He told me a sad story. Most of the snakes he keeps in the park are rescues. Snake are part in many Cypriot superstitions such as "snake in a bottle". George has been working towards abolishing this as well as the fear of snakes in Cyprus. My favorite non venomous snake in the park was to be the jet black large whip snake. Upon looking at it I happened to notice it had quite a few scales missing, as though they had been ripped off. George told me these particular snakes were rescues from farmers nets. The farmers, it seemed had placed nets to keep the snakes out of their fields. The snakes slides through a loop in the net, struggle to get through, try to reverse and the strong nylon net digs straight into the gap between each of the snakes scales, ripping them off. It saddens me to hear of this sort of story but I thought id pas it on anyway. George is having to move his reptile park as the rented land it is on had been sold. All I can say is good luck snakes George and we hope you Set up a new park soon. Pics of the reptile park coming soon (lots of viper pics) Thanks Adzscott |
