SAND FOR SUBSTRATE!!?? I use aspen chips there harmless chemical and fragrance free my mali like to hide under it well she thinks she’s hiding but she’s not. I think everyone is debating sand some say they live on sand others say no sand please. Alot of people use birdseed or even newspaper even millet seed. I have never experienced with the sand and wish not to after some of the stories I have heard So I just stick with the trusty aspen.

SAND FOR SUBSTRATE!!?? You will not get a straight answer on this question. There are certain things NOT to use such as Calci Sand or crushed walnut shells but everyone has thier favorite and what has worked for them, so you’ll just have to go with what you are most comfortable with. If you have bird seed now and that has worked for you I would suggest just to stick with it.

SAND FOR SUBSTRATE!!?? Playsand and millet are both safe substrates. I personally use sand and have had no problems with it. I use one of those kitty litter scoops to remove the poop and wasted food. Its cheap too and looks very natural.

SAND FOR SUBSTRATE!!?? Bearded Bob, Washed playsand can be utilized as a viable substrate. The key to using sand is that your temperature gradient(air temps) must be consistent. I use washed playsand without any ill effects to date. I am confident that a number of people will state that in no way should one use playsand due to the risk of impaction. This is a viable concern, but if your temperatures are correct, you feed a diet of consisting of the trinity(curly endive, escarole, dandelion or arugula or both)as your staple greens, then you should have no problems utilizing sand. I can speak about the use of millet/bird seed as I have never utilized those as a substrate. There are a number of people here who do utilize the aforementioned seed substrates and their experiences with the substrate are far better to study and then compare the risks of using sand vs. seed. If you chose to use sand be advised that your uros may stress ....even miminal changes in a uros established environment is going to cause some stress. This might lead to a decrease in appetite, until the uros become acclimated. I have one geyri within my collection, and I have observed that he does not need as much of a layer of sand as my mali’s do. The mali’s tend to burrow and dig alot more than the geyri. These are just my observations and my experiences with my own pets, and is by no means the holy gospel. Just observation and experience. Best of luck in your decision making and with your Uros.Best regards, Carson Grindstaff
