Im a new Uromastyx owner, i have lots of questions. Im sure this forum and members will be of great help. pleased to meet you. Im going through growing pains with my new lizard. The biggest concern right now is how much to feed it and how often should i offer it food. im going though a great deal of expense trying different fresh greens and grains and frozen vegetables along with live crickets and worms. I need to get a basic diet established thats affordably maintainable. Im wasting lots of food items that just go bad. These are my first of many questions, please any help is appreciated..

Im a new Uromastyx owner, i have lots of questions. I just finished typing the answer to your question to Tigerbug but I don’t mind doing it again especially when I see live crickets in print!!!First off, Welcome to the uro forum! First thing I learned about uros was that they are herbivores so please no live crickets, dead one’s not good either, and no worms. No animal protein! I have Pogo on wild bird seed with sunflower and black oil sifted out and the majority of seed left is millet. She nibbles on that sometimes and I also sprinkle in dry lentils and she searches that out too. I put in a dish of greens daily and you won’t know how much to put in until you experimented for awhile. I feed Pogo curly endive and escarole, other people said dandelion green too but I haven’t been able to find any in the store. This is probably something you can find in your own backyard in the summer as long as they have not been prayed with pesticide. A bunch of endive/escarole usually last a week if not longer and I alternate between the two. It’s roughly about $1 a week, Canadian!!

Im a new Uromastyx owner, i have lots of questions. I will try the greens you mentioned and cut back on the crickets and bugs. Im getting a lot of different feedback from other sources ( all conflicting ) so it is difficult to settle on a course of action. Im using wild bird seed as substrate. He is in a 40 gallon breeder tank. the ambient temp is around 90 degrees and the hot spot is about 130 degrees during the day and i let the temps go down to about 100 on the hot side and 70 on the cool side. the food i put in tends to go bad or dry up rather quickly. So i guess i should just put the food in every other day during his active times. He seems friendly and does not freak out when i put my hand in his cage, in fact he usually crawls on my hand. Its funny that this relativley small lizard is causing so much concern in my life. My 7 ft red tail boa is much easier to care for. weird.

Im a new Uromastyx owner, i have lots of questions. Heya, welcome to the boards and grats on your new uro. Can you post pics of it and what type is it? First off go to www.deerfernfarms.com and read their care sheets and general info on each species. It has been documented in field studies of ornate uros that they do not eat live prey intentionally. What type of basking temps and ambient temps do you have? Every day about 3 hours after their lights come on my wife feeds all the animals who eat greens. She knows how much they eat now and I usually overfeed them when I do it. (Not being sexist with her feeding them, I work during the day and she deals with the kids at home, reptilian and screaming monkeys). She gives them enough to keep them eating all day but not have much left over at the end of the day. Since there is no moisture in their cages she leaves left over food in the cage for a day or so and the uros munch on that as well. If you have uro-dust, miner-all or reptivite get a set schedule for days you dust with them. A uro usually requires 4-6 week acclimation period and up to 8 weeks or more for more skittish animals. Good luck and enjoy your new kid. Trent

Im a new Uromastyx owner, i have lots of questions. I will try to get you pictures later, he is sleeping right now. he is black with green spots all over his back. He seems very acclimated already, he was bred and raised locally so he is a captive born.

Im a new Uromastyx owner, i have lots of questions. Videodogg, In addition to the diet your Uro. will require a good UVB light as well as the uva which supplies the heat. They also require a calcium supplement on their foods. I like Grandma use the curly endives, and lentils for their hunt and seek exercise. The amount that a Uro. will eat can be a lot when the temps. are right. I like Frocto will leave some of the greens that they pull out of their dish in the tank to dry, but I give fresh veggies everyday. No water in my tank and I use millet seed for bedding. Your Temps may be a little off and need to be checked to keep the proper heat in the 3 important areas. We recomened a temp. gun to help with the task of getting the gradient heat right as well as the ambient heat in all the areas that need to be checked. Welcome to the forum and I hope this helps. Grandma, Found a place that has fresh Dandilion Greens near the house. Cost about $1.79 a bunch. I was wondering how they would do if I shipped them to you. Would I be permitted to send them to Canada? Joan A.

Im a new Uromastyx owner, i have lots of questions. well, i have uv florescent and uv incandecent basking bulbs as well as a spot light. No under tank heating. During the day the hot side can get around 130 degrees farenhiet and the colder side hovers around 90. At night its around 100 on the hot and 70 on the cool side. Im in New Hamphire, not Canada, so im sure you would have no problem shipping the dandilon greens. I may take you up on that some time, thanks.

Im a new Uromastyx owner, i have lots of questions. I think you are the right track with your temps. and having the proper diet should get you going. I live in Florida so when we are having warm weather I take my Uros. outside in a rubbermaid bin to enjoy the natural UVB rays. That is about the only time I really handle them other than if I have to move them for cleaning, or 4 hurricanes to a safe place Lol! I had seen the Dandilion greens at this fruit stand by my home and they seem to carry them on a regular basis. I also get cactus pads about once a month and clean and dice them up for my Uros. and Beardies. They seem to be a nice treat along with some ground up butternut squash (which I use the Squash on a regularbasis). One other thing you might want to condsider is a hibiscus plant. We have them all here in Florida. The flowers as well as the leaves are edible as long as they are not sprayed with any type of insecticide. They come in a variety of colors and my Uros. will tear up the flowers, but some colors are eaten faster than others. Joan A.

Im a new Uromastyx owner, i have lots of questions. Joan,Thanks for the offer. I don’t think the fresh greens will survive the cold making the trek to the great white north. I find it ironic that we can bring fruit back into Canada but trying to get past the homeland security bunch across the south border? Not a chance. But thanks again for the offer. PG

Im a new Uromastyx owner, i have lots of questions. Grandma, When I had seen the bunches of Dandilion Greens all piled up on the fruit stand shelf. The first thing that came to mind was Pogo devouring some of the tasty greens, Auntie Joan had sent. Well I guess It will have to wait until you Pogo and the family make a visit to our fair state. Try to stay warm! Joan A.
