What if the enclosure is too hot?

This is a hypothetical/curiosity question, since I don’t recall ever seeing it addressed - "too cool" always is, but what about too warm? If the hot end of the tank was noticably more than the general recommendation (which seems to be 100-105 F or so - thats ambient, not basking), say, 115+, what kind of effects would this have? Would the uros simply move till they find the cooler end of the tank, or would there be a more adverse effect? Or would they enjoy the extra heat?

Just part of my quest to add to the "Uro Knowledgebase" in my mind Thanks!

What if the enclosure is too hot?

While I’m not entirely sure what the normal reaction to this is I think I can say what my Uro’s reaction to this is, I was trying a new bulb, in my MHD enclosure it wasn’t getting that warm. Well I redid my MHD enclosure and the light I was using I changed to another.
Well those that have read my post on Yoda and Amidallah know I had to put the divider back up, the divider doesn’t go up to the top of the cage due to the 36inch UVB bulb in there. I had to take the 75watt bulb that I was using on Yoda’s side and give it to my beardie in her new enclosure since the 100 watt one was too close to the basking spot in my initial setup. Too make this shorter, I put my MHD’s old bulb in for Yoda, well the last two days he has managed to climb over the wall into Amidallah’s side. I thought he was doing this because he was being aggressive or horny.
To stop this I swapped Leia and Yoda thinking she had no reason to climb the wall, right away she does it, twice. I go about redoing the divider, I grab the slate rock to move it and burn my finger, I get my temp gun, the first reading read 194degrees. all around it read between 160-195 degrees. My reason for missing this drastic temp rise is because I use the indoor/outdoor digital therm from wal-mart, the outdoor sensor is attached to Amidallah’s side and normally stays around 85-92 at the midpoint of her enclosure. I switched to the indoor reading which is on Yoda’s side and it’s 145. I switched him back to a different bulb and redid the UVB bulb and divider, he’s abit peeved at me but seems ok.

The bulb that was cooking them was a GE 90 watt hallogen floodlight.
They don’t seem any worse for wear but have given them water for a short time to make sure noone is dehydrated and am observing them to make sure noone got hurt.

So I guess the answer to your question is they will try to get away. Or at least mine did:) maybe that helps.

What if the enclosure is too hot?

Vampire,
A very good question that helps to illustrate a very important aspect of uromastyx husbandry. Temperature gradient. With a proper temperature gradient in your enclosure, you are providing your uro with the means to self regulate their body temperature. If the temp is too hot, the uro will seek a cooler area, more to its liking. When he/she starts to cool they will migrate to a warmer zone. The posting by Frocto was a most excellent example of how a uromastyx will use its enclosure, to self regulate its body temp.

Best regards,

Carson

umm...any chance you can still return it to the store?...hot rocks are NOT recommended for Uros (or any reptile really) They have been known to cause serious burns. Apparently the lizard is wired to think heat=good and will not recognize that the heat rock is burning them. Go get your money back for the heat rock, and use it to get an overhead heat lamp instead!
