 Uro’s Eye Stuck- URGENT

I understand that uromastyx bulge their eyes and roll them to get debri out. I am used to this. However, my lizard’s one eye has gotten stuck. The pink membrane is outside of his eye and won’t reenter his eyelid. What do I do? Anyone have experience with this? It’s been like this for a few days. I need a remedy ASAP (and don’t just say go to the vet, I clearly understand that that would be the next step if there is no at-home remedy.) And please don’t just ask for all the info about my tank setup. I don’t have time for that. Thank you in advance for the help.

This is not a minor wound that you can use neosporin or bedadine on...u basically can’t do anything for the uro at home no home remedies will work the only thing to do is go to the vet before it gets worse...

So you don’t think there is any sort of product sold at stores that will help his eye membrane roll back in? Nothing?

I guess you’d need something that is safe for use on and around the eye area that could moisten it and "lube" it back into place. I’m not sure if neosporin would be safe for use in this situation since it’s definitely gonna be hard to apply without it getting directly on the eye and I don’t know if it’s safe for eyes. Are you able to post a picture of this so we can have an idea of what exactly it looks like? If you don’t wanna take the animal to a vet, maybe try and contact one just to see what they think, although they will most likely ask to see the animal as well. I guess the only thing a vet can really do is apply a bit of pressure to attempt to put the eyelid back into place, but I wouldn’t recommend attempting that yourself if you haven’t already.

Here are the pictures. It looks pretty gross. It is the membrane that always comes out of uro’s eyes when they roll them. It’s stuck. But everyone, please do not use these pictures as a means of ridiculing me as a bad owner. People do that far too often on this forum.

Yes, that does look pretty bad. I believe this is something that is going to require professional assistance. I would schedule an appointment with a herp specialist as soon as possible. Good luck!

If it doesn’t clear up and I can’t figure out anything to do for it in the next few days, I will have to go. The only reason I hesitate is the cost (will probably be close to $200), and the fact that I don’t trust my vet. She has told me that perhaps my uro is pregnant once. I was like "He’s a boy... so..." So she went to go do tests on him. I was like "No. Seriously. He’s definitely a boy." -__- And my entire half of the state doesn’t seem to have any reptile vets either so... It’s just annoying.

Honestly, while I understand your hesitance, this looks to be a fairly serious issue. Any time trauma occurs in/around sensitive areas, like the eye, the quicker to can take care of the issue the better off the animal is. If left untreated it may very well lose sight in the affected eye. With the amount of swelling I see I don’t imagine it retracting back into the eye any time soon without some type of anti inflamatory medication. In the meantime I would suggest removing any and all particulate from the enclosure--this means sand, seed, soil, etc etc.

Omg. I took him to the vet. She thought it was a malignant tumor and wanted to cut it out. I was like "Um... it’s his eye, so...." In the end, we wouldn’t allow the cutting of his eye. So he got eye cream. Hopefully it works since it was $90 altogether.

Sounds like you’re in a situation like me, vet-wise. We only have one registered herp vet in my province and I still don’t know if she’s any good. I’m out of luck if I need a vet.

In your whole province? Aren’t Canadian provinces really big?

And OHHHH MY LANTA you guys. I should just become a veterinarian! I looked at Stirwin this morning and realized a tiny little thing was sticking out of the inflamed membrane. (It wasn’t there yesterday.) So I started pulling at it. It was an entire piece of my hair, wrapped around the stuck part of the membrane. So I used tweezers and got that sucker out. So let’s hope with the new cream (which is Neo-Poly-Bac with HC Opthalmic for future reference), and with the hair gone he will go back to normal. Fingers crossed. Has ANYONE had this happen? This is the second time in 8 years that Stirwin has had something weird happen with hair. Before, he ate a piece of mine and I had to pull it out of his behind. Awkwardddd.

Haha, not all of the provinces are big. I live in one of the smaller ones. Only got 500,000 people where I live.

Hmmm, try and call another herp vet that’s further away. Obviously, if they’re too far you can’t really go to them, but maybe they can give you instructions on what to do if this doesn’t clear up. If traveling to a better vet isn’t an option, it might become a do-it-yourself kinda thing if it doesn’t get any better. :/

What are you gonna find in the store to roll back his dragons eye membrane it has to be done by a vet I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want to injure his pet he loves even more

So let me know if you find anything that he can use without endangering his pet more

No need to be rude. If a vet is too far then the only thing he can do is call an experienced vet and see what he can do or go to the bad one and get the eye removed totally. Seems like the only two options.
