 JUST INHERITED URO MALI

Due to a house fire I just inherited my grandsons Uro Mali that I purchased for him 10 years ago
I did always take care of it (dont know if its a male or female ) I bought the greens and veggies calcium and vitamins cleaned the tank etc. About 2 years ago he dropped his tail. We don’t know why and it never grew back
My grandson never turned off the 150 watt (basking) heat lamp at night
Now I’m reading its very important to do that but I don’t know if its too late to start turning it off since he’s been use to having it on all the time. I also have the ZILLA 18inch 50 UVB T8 flourescent slimline fixture on all the time
Should I continue to leave the heat lamp on or turn it off at night ???
Considering all he’s been through he seems to be doing very well !!!

That’s unfortunate (re fire)--I hope everyone made it out OK. As for the uro, what, exactly, do you mean by it ’dropped’ it’s tail, better yet to what extent is the damage? I ask because uros do not possess a caudal tail like many other species do. In order for the tail to be removed there needs to be a lot of trauma endured, be it quick (a sever) or prolonged (tail rot/gangrene/infection), and once it happens there is no regrowth--what’s lost is lost. This, to a uromastyx, represents almost certain death, specifically to those in the wild, as the animal has no other place to store fats and other nutrients. Can you post an image of this? While the animal may seem to be doing well it may be merely a facade--these animals, among many other reptiles, are very good at ’hiding’ health issues on the exterior.

As far as setup, lighting and diet are concerned I would suggest reading through various other posts directly below yours (take notes!) and checking out urowiki.filecore(dot)net, deerfernfarms(dot)com and moonvalleyreptiles(dot)com for more info on the genus. In addition I would highly suggest reading through and filling out the ’Please Read Before Posting’ questionnaire that is posted on the index page here. This will help people target specific holes and or shortcomings you may have in regards to husbandry and general setup.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Yes my daughter and family were away on vacation and I was taking care of her dogs and the Uro. The house had been hit by lightening and I just happened to get there at exactly the right time to save the dogs. The firemen saved the lizard as he was upstairs where the fire started and they carried down his huge tank which was covered in ashes, and soot. I was extremely grateful and happy! This lizard literally has 9 lives!
The day I purchased this Uro I was given the wrong information on just about everything. I’m not sure 10 years ago pet stores even knew much about them! He (or she) literally fit in the palm of my hand, couldnt have been more than 2 1/2 inches long, probably too young to be sold. I continued to do research and I believe he has been given the proper diet, has the proper lighting, tank set up properly etc. He survived many things, too much to go into here, in part because of bad information, in part mother nature and in part a child that grew into a busy teen that lost some interest.
Then one day 2 or so years ago my grandson called me and said Zil’s tail had broken off and he had no idea how! I went there and the last few inches of tail was sitting in the tank. He wasn’t visibly injured and seemed to recover fine . The end of his tail looks kind of white. I will try to upload a pic if I can. He eats from my hand, he’s a sweet thing.I love him so much. I have no idea how or why this happened and since he acts fine, other than not looking as pretty as he did, I assumed he was fine. Then I read your reply and now I’m so worried that he might not be fine. Is it possible that after all this time and acting totally normal that he could be ill from losing his tail??? If so what signs should I look for ??

I don’t mean to worry you, but yes, just because the animal appears to be fine it may not be in optimal or even good health. There is a lot of misinformation out there, both on the internet and pushed by salespersons and or so-called ’reptile specialists’. What you consider as ’proper’ diet, lighting and setup may be far off depending on where you received your information, which is precisely why it would be very helpful for you to fill out the questionnaire I alluded to in my initial response. The sooner you do this the sooner you will know if the animal is receiving optimal care. The very same applies to reading through various threads here as well as reading through the links I provided.

 JUST INHERITED URO MALI

Ok I did TONS of research I went into every link and thread suggested and read read read! It can become a little confusing cause most of the threads and sites seem to have different opinions on feeding, lighting etc. Having said that I believe I have him set up pretty well. He seems happy, healthy, well fed so I’m not going to stress about this anymore. My original question that I posted I still can’t seem to find any info on. I keep reading its important to assimilate desert like conditions by turning off the heat lamp so many hours a night depending on the season. His heat source has NEVER been turned off in 10 years and my question is " would it be ok to start doing that now after 10 years, or would he be too cold at night ?" My house now in the summer where I keep him is probably about 72 at night and in the winter it’s probably about 68 at night, which I’m thinking would be too cold for him. Some of those sites and threads recommended the under tank heat pads, others said no ?????? More confusion
Thank You

you can use something like imgur, it’s as simple as dragging the photos onto the webpage, and pressing upload.

Could the reason I can’t view any photos either be because I’m using my iPad and not my pc ?
More importantly I REALLY need a reply from anyone who might know the answer to my original question which I reposted a few days ago since no one answered this question on my first post, which is considering for 10 years his heat lamp was NEVER turned off at night and now since having him here in my home and doing sooo much research ( I read its very important to turn the heat lamp off so many hours a night, depending on the season, to assimilate desert like conditions) would it be ok to start doing that now or will he be too cold at night??? Where he is in my house is around 72 in the summer at night and 68 in the winter. If it would be advisable to turn off his heat lamp at night, should I then get under tank heat pads ?? I’ve read pros and cons on those too on all those reputable sites ! No where can I find the answer to this PLEASE HELP !

Hey no worries, you could buy a CHE (Ceramic Heat Emitter) it looks like the element on a stove, it emits heat, but no light, perfect for night time. You can buy them at nearly any pet store I’ve been to. For know I don’t know what would be best (leaving the light on and having light at night time, or leaving the light off and being cold) I’m honestly still researching as I’m picking up my first Uro this weekend at an expo.

And I’m not sure why you wouldn’t be able to view your photos.. I would try using your transferring them from your ipad to your pc, and then uploading them to imgur from your pc. I could host them for you if you are comfortable emailing them to me, if trouble persists.

 JUST INHERITED URO MALI

Thank you so much!! I did read about the ceramic heaters but I DIDNT realize they DIDNT give off light ! I will get one tomorrow and switch on and off with the basking heat bulb. Actually ill probably use both and just put the basking bulb on a timer cause my neighbor gave me 2 digital heat / humidity thermometers and his tank is not as hot as it should be and I use a 150 watt basking bulb and a UVB tube flourescent light . Any idea how many watts I should get in the CHE ???
Thanks for offering to help me with my pics of ZIL. I will work on that again tomorrow and email you at least one of him or her ?? because I would like opinions about the tail falling off a few years ago and yes I am unable to view any of the pics in the photo gallery on this site! A weird message comes on when I click on a photo
Thanks again you were extreme helpful! Ill check this page in the am before I go out to buy the CHE to see what wattage to get if you’re familiar with that !

I’m not really sure about wattage, sadly. I’m picking one up tomorrow, I bought "all" my electrical, heating and lighting stuff today but forgot the CHE, so I haven’t experimented with the temperature yet, which is too bad because our houses seem to be kept at around the same temp.

To email the photos, you can simply send them to me as an attachment at my email:

I’ll put them on imgur and start a thread on this forum as soon as I receive them, it may be tomorrow because I have a morning class tomorrow and should be going to sleep soon.

I use a 100w CHE. It’s the lowest wattage I could find available. The 150 seems like it would be too warm. The 100w, I think, is designed to up the ambient temperature like 10 degrees.

Zoo Med is a favorite brand of mine. I’m very happy with their products. The Zoo Med CHE is actually the one I use. Make sure not to put it in a regular dome lamp though. I heard that they have overheating issues if not put in a cage clamp lamp, and I’ve never bothered testing out if they actually do or not.
