Best substrate for baby Uro? Hi there! I have a baby Mali Uro and was wondering what the best type of substrate is - I am very concerned about impaction risks just because he’s so small. I have read different articles about fine desert sand, birdseed, etc and I want to hear from you guys. He is currently on reptile carpet (not astroturf), but I notice that he tries to dig. I want him to be happy but safe, too! Thanks! : )

Best substrate for baby Uro?
Hi repticarpet is fine. You can also use paper towels newspaper and craft paper, You can always shred (sp) the paper towels so he or she can get underneath it. Hope that helps. Bonny

Best substrate for baby Uro? I would opt against paper towels,or carpet. Use a substrtate that Your Uro can dig into, several inches.

Best substrate for baby Uro? I would not recommend a substrate that uromastyx can dig into several inches. I agree with dragon lady on the recommendations for hatchling substrate but would recommend keeping an eye out if using the paper towels. I have heard from several people that their uromastyx have made paper towels a part of their diet. Although this is primarily fiber, enough (especially in small uros) could possibly lead to an impaction. I used paper towels for the first week with my hatchlings and did not have any problems. I think that the likelhood of a uro eating paper towels is slim but I did wanted to mention it as it has come up before.
