 Hello All

Hello,
Just recently found out about this website from a fellow Uromastyx owner...I’ve been reading previous posts on here for a bit, and basically just wanted to introduce myself and say hello......

I’ve had Bearded Dragons and Leopard Geckos for a while, but just recently purchased a Uromastyx geryi (He’s a "Red" and I named him Rex)....Currently he eats his food, poops, and otherwise seems to be doing fine.....(other than him being very skittish.....but after reading more, and talking to others I’ve come the conclusion that is just typical for this species....so not really too worried about that or anything.)
Again, just basically wanted to say hello..... and I will certainly ask if I have any questions..

 Hello All

Welcome !! Yeah, Uro’s are more of an Observation pet than a handling pet. Mine used to run everytime I came in the room. Now they come to the glass if I tap on it. I sat by their enclosure on the weekends, all day, very quietly and not moving too fast and they just got used to me. I’ve also had mine for 2+ yrs, except my babies, just got them in June. I have 5 total ranging in age from 18 months to almost 5 yrs old. The small ones are about 7" and my oldest one is over 13" now and weighs a whopping 432g as of yesterday.

Feel free to ask questions, but know this that we are straight forward and will tell you like it is. We are not trying to be rude or mean, just looking out for the wellfare of the animals.

Please post some pictures of your baby !

 Hello All

Have no idea if this picture will post, but here’s an attempt at it...

We’ve had Rex about 4 weeks or so.... we purchased him from someone at a Repticon show in our area... We were told by that person that he was 5 months old and a Male Nigerian/Saharan......We took him to our vet for a wellness exam shortly after bringing him home...Our vet specializes in exotics...but readily admitted that while he had lots of "knowledge" about Uros...he had never examined a live Uro before.....(he mainly deals with Bearded Dragons, Geckos and Snakes.....and he is GREAT with those.)...He told us about the dietary needs and everything, and gave us a caresheet on the Uro, and some more informational stuff..As far as the "wellness" went, all he could really tell us was that he weighed 82 grams, he was parasite free, (he got a fecal and did the test), that his skin looked healthy, and that I shouldn’t be worried about his weight, (I was worried he looked too thin) He said they looked that way during the juvenile stage and that as long as he continued to eat his food like he has been, he would eventually "fatten up" with time.....He was unsure of the sex, and couldn’t verify it was a male (he said since he hadn’t ever worked with a Uro before, he wasn’t going to make an attempt on Rex..he said to feel free and bring him back at a later date, when he was older and he could look at him again.)

Thanks for the "heads up" on the fact that this is a pretty "straight forward" type of forum........I doubt that will be a problem.....(I teach Middle School Math/Algebra.....so, to be honest, I am pretty "straight forward" as well.)

Again, thank you for the welcome and I will certainly let you know if I have any questions or anything.

 Hello All

Welcome and thanks for posting, hope he gets settled in well. Mine is improving on his skittishness and unlike other lizards handling them doesn’t seem to do anything for taming them and patience works better. Although some people have one that come up to them and others that aren’t interested in being touched. Its not a surprise with vets even finding one that does reptiles is hard much less the particular species you own. None had ever seen my Collared lizard before. Vets in regards to reptiles seem to be a mixed bag. There are two in my area that seem reasonably knowledgeable but sometimes contradict each others opinions. If there is enough to shop around it doesn’t hurt to see more than one until you comfortable with them.

 Hello All

Wow, was it an actual breeder you purchased him form? Or just a vender at the show?

Might just be the picture but he looks very large for a 5 month old hatchling Saharan.

How much does he weigh?

Here is a picture of a 2009 Saharan hatchling Brett Maniscalco hatched out this year for comparison.

 Hello All

Thank you for the welcomes glad to be here.....as for your question about Rex...he weighed 82 grams on Oct 10th (his vet visit)...the guy I bought him from told me he was 5 months old...but like you are suggesting...after seeing pictures of others and doing more research, I am beginning to think that he might be older......and as for whether it was an actual breeder or vender...to be honest, I’m not real sure, but leaning towards a vendor.........The guy I bought him from was selling Bearded Dragons, and while talking to him, I noticed that he also had about 5 Uros for sale......He told me he hadn’t bred them, but that he was selling them for another breeder... and he gave me the info that he was a male, and that he was 5 months old (so who really knows)...All I do know is that Rex is the first Reptile I have ever actually picked out and "purchased"....(all of my others reptiles had been rescues)...I look forward to watching him grow, and seeing how his colors and personality develops..

 Hello All

Hi! Congrats on the uro! I also have a male red phase geyri named Sahell. He’s wild caught, definitely an adult male. I am thinking your 5 mo old, is probably two years old. Still a juvenile, but not a hatchling. Shell was about two when we got him, about 8" and about 85 grams. That is also about the size of my ornate male, just a bit heavier, but going on 2 1/2 I guess. At any rate, s/he is still young, and needs really good husbandry. If he is under 7", you need to keep him on newspaper substrate. Make sure your temps are high enough, no soaking, no water in the enclosure, and no crickets/worms/bugs at all.

I have added an older picture of Sahell, he is much larger and much much redder now. I just got a new Mega Ray bulb, and he just about glows he is so red/orange!! Good luck with your baby!! Well, it won’t let me upload anything right now!! I’ll try again a bit later!!
