Can Uromastyx since Winter even if temps are fine I have read that they can sense barometric pressure or something of that sort, is this true? I have temps correct but lately my uro has been hardly eating, using bathroom, and sleeping a ton.

Can Uromastyx since Winter even if temps are fine You must be Relatively new to owning an Uro, right? The reason why he/she is sleeping more is because Uro’s go through what is known as "brumation" which is kinda like hibernation but they get up through the day, eat a little, bask for a few then go sleep, its a way to save energy as in the desert (and correct if i’m wrong) there is a growing season as with every where else on earth. during he winter months there is less food so they store energy in their body by sleeping most of the day. It’s basic 5th grade science( okay not really but pretty easy to understand..) Most bears in N.A. are like this except for the fact that they Sleep ALL winter. Most breeders will shorten the lighting time and lower the temps A LITTLE during the winter months to prepare them for breeding. DO NOT TRY THIS UNLESS YOU ARE EXPERIENCE WITH BREEDING THEM.
To answer your question- I don’t know.

Can Uromastyx since Winter even if temps are fine Firstly i dont think Blake is a "newbie" to uros. Secondly the question is not "5th grade science" level. But yes i think they can tell what season it is and they do eat less when the season changes. All my reps are eating less and sleeping more at the moment.

Can Uromastyx since Winter even if temps are fine Even if you go out of your way to keep ambient tmeperature in your house the same between seasons they seem to be able to tell the difference!

Can Uromastyx since Winter even if temps are fine They know , now matter what you do, no matter the temps, they will start to slow down a bit in all aspects. Eating, activity, sleeping more. Mine are still pretty active everyday but eat less and go to bed earlier.
Don’t know what triggers it but they know lol

Can Uromastyx since Winter even if temps are fine Its been unseasonably warm here in swfl but my uros are slowing down too. Maui and the babies will leave food in their bowls every couple of days. Still active on most days, other days they tend to go to bed around mid afternoon.

Can Uromastyx since Winter even if temps are fine Just seems very crazy that they can some how sense the different seasons approaching, even if the temperatures are good. Just was curious to what people had to say about brumation and what not, its always been something that I have been curious about. Thanks everyone for the responses!

Can Uromastyx since Winter even if temps are fine I dunno, but I think along the way when we evolved into what we are now, we lost some things. Uros are smarty lizards and probably sense the subtle shifts in lighting as well as barometer. I have a large window here and it certainly has an effect on him even if I can’t tell you exactly what the subtle differences are day to day. There are days when the temp and humidity are better than others, yet he will have a different response. I really should get some kind of barometer tool just to get a better idea.

Can Uromastyx since Winter even if temps are fine Keep a bunch of women away from natural light for several weeks, and you can see how much we have "evolved". Ever notice how grumpy everyone gets when the weather is rainy and dank for weeks?? Ever notice your hair grow faster in the summer? There are all kinds of things our bodies are aware of that we are not specifically aware of. With the time change, they notice more road rage the first week. Go figure!!

Can Uromastyx since Winter even if temps are fine LOL, anyone kept away from natural light would be miserable. I guess that’s why in prison good behavior gets rewarded with more outdoor time. I sweat more in summer, that I know. Anyhow, I hope someone figures out the secret to uros ability to sense weather. It wasn’t too long ago it became known cats hated lightning coz it creates a lot of static in their fur which licking just won’t get rid of.

Quote: Ever notice how grumpy everyone gets when the weather is rainy and dank for weeks?? Try living in SEATTLE !!!! The weather turned nastier after Mid October and I’m telling you, everyone here is getting grumpier and grumpier !! More accidents on the freeways, cop killings, robberies of old ladies on the street.... its just plain out of control here !
As for my Uro’s and winter, I maintain my dining room (where they are) at a balmy 70 degs all winter, now they do slow down a little, but not much. They are usually out by 8am and down by 6pm and running around all day, finishing every bit of food in their bowl. I know when I had them in the living room and the sun would shine in their enclosure they would be really active.

Can Uromastyx since Winter even if temps are fine My uro has never been an early riser but yeah by 6pm these days he’s ready for bed, all he needs to do is stare at the sunlight fading outside the window and start yawning, resting his head on a rock pillow and get fixated on a light source in the room to tell me to turn it off.
