 Mali acclimation problems...

Hello all, I am the proud new owner of a male juvie Mali Uromastyx. He came to me in top condition and is incredibly charming (this is my first experience with Uromastyx so I’m still taken aback, even after 2 weeks, how attentive they are). I’m having problems getting him acclimated to my home. The first week he rarely left his cave. I tried a trick a few days ago, where I taped up newspaper around the entire perimeter of the glass tank, effectively erasing his view of the outside world. It worked like a charm; I saw him eating on 4 different occasions and he was basking all day and into the late-afternoon. However, as soon as I tried shedding pieces of the newspaper, gradually, he just fled back to the cave. This morning, he woke up at noon (like clockwork!) and peeked his head out at the greens I layed out at him; you can tell he wanted to eat, but he wouldn’t step out of the cave out of timidness. Once again, about an hour after the last time, he came out of his tank and went right to the food dish, but would NOT stop staring at me and everything else in the living room (where I keep him), and even though I tried to move slowly by the tank and ignore him, he still hightailed it back to the tank eventually. I’m not sure if I made the right decision taking all the newpaper off so soon; I just felt as though I would eventually make his acclimation problems worse by keeping all of it on. Can anyone provide some help regarding acclimation? Should I just wait it out, or are there measures I can be taking to make him feel more comfortable? The temperature is pretty spot on: 120 degrees on the left side of my 50 gallon, 90 degrees in the center, and 80 degrees to the right side of the tank (which is where his cave is). I’ve only handled him a few times since I’ve gotten him in the mail (I got him from a reputable breeder, I don’t trust petstores). I try to avoid handling just yet, as I don’t want to further his stress, although the times I have held him he seemed very docile and curious. Any experts out there have any ideas? I’m more of a gecko-guy, and this is my first experience with a Uro, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading.

Oh, there’s good news and bad news. This is very new to me... I would like to know if you removed the newspaper áll at once or did you "tease with windows" and gradually opened up his view of the world outside his tank? If you used a screen which is what the newspaper is, then treat it as a screen and not as a curtain call LOL. In other words, your uro may prefer more newspaper at this time, leave him gaps (torned) as windows and see how he will react before you expose him to the new world so to speak?

 Mali acclimation problems...

Mine after six weeks is a lot less skittish but is not at the point where I can even think about opening the cage while its out and about. He does like to spend some of his time with just his head poking out of his hide surveying the area. From every owner on this and other forums the animals are generally skittish but may get used to people with time but is dependent on individuals. Patience seems to be key to anything with this animal. Mine didn’t mind being observed from a respectful distance from day one but shot like a bolt if you got close. Its now at the point I can sit by the cage and look at it as long as I don’t move suddenly.

It will just take time. Some never calm down but most do . It may take months though.
The 50 gallon is way too small for a uro. You should look into upgrading asap.
Stop handling him, that’s just adding to his stress. Uro’s are not handling types of pets. Ok for a couple minutes but that’s about it and only well after there settled in.
Is your entire hot side 120 ? or just his basking spot ?
