 Question: My Uro hasn’t ...

I have a question about faeces.
My dino has been eating, not a whole lot lately, but still he eats.
Especially Bok Choi, his favorite. Infact, that is what he mostly eats lately, just his favorites [blueberry, bok choi, red peppers and lettuce]
He used to poop about 3-4 times a week.
But he hasn’t defecated in almost 2 weeks.
How can I help him relief some of that "Poo" ? :-)

 Question: My Uro hasn’t ...

try soaking him in warm water. people have differing opinions about getting uros wet since they live in the desert, but as long as you get him thoroughly dry, he should be fine. pay special attention to his tail, the spikes can hold water and he will get tail rot. i have never had any problems w/ my uros the few times i have gotten them wet. the warm water acts as like a laxative and helps them "go". hope this helps!

 Question: My Uro hasn’t ...

Soaking a uro is one of the worse things you can do to it. There are sooooo many chances for negative things to happen. they can inhale water, get tail rot, get majorly stressed out,get a respiratory infection, etc. No matter how hot you think the water is to you, it will be cold to them. Dont take those chances with your pet.
Uro’s will start to slow down around this time of year. They will eat less, poo less, be less active.
Clean out the enclosure really well to make double sure he’s not going. If he’s not, I would suggest a vet visit, not soaking.
Soaking will do more harm then good.
Why people still suggest it is beyond me.

Instead of trying to KILL your uro by Soaking, which can not only cause tail rot, but URI, maybe try putting some olive oil on his/her greens to help things slide along. Also, Bok Choi should not be a staple food, try adding in other things like Endive, Escarole, Dandelion leaves.

Blueberry, bok choi, red peppers and lettuce... hmm... there’s not much fibre... maybe that explains why he’s pooping so little. :)

But if he hasn’t seen a vet in the last 6 months or ever... why not schedule a vet visit soon with a fecal sample, just to get a better idea what’s going on inside him.

 Question: My Uro hasn’t ...

HI,

And how do you suggest I get a fecal sample if he isn’t pooping?
I was told to add a little mineral oil to his diet.
Hopefully that will do the trick.
Thanks for all your suggestions, it is much appreciated!

Um, you don’t feed him head lettuce do you, because I’m pretty sure that it has so much water in it that it can impact a Mali, at least from what I’ve heard, so if that’s the case I’d stop feeding that immediately...

 Question: My Uro hasn’t ...

My uro has never been constipated, please check with the poster who suggested mineral oil and your vet about this. :)

You can send a fecal sample if he poops the day before or the same day he’s scheduled for the vet, otherwise, you can send it to the vet later, just ask the vet as many questions as you can either on the phone or in person at the clinic to get a better idea what to do and what is going on.

In the wild, uros do eat fruit. Some species eat more fruit than others, because not every desert has the same species of plants, some have more fruit trees or shrubs, some have less. But from what I’ve learnt, they eat only the ripe fruit. And it’s probably seasonal, these plant don’t always produce fruit all year round... and they have to produce flowers first, pollinate them, etc.

My assumption here is that your uro is a picky eater, and that he’s refused other veggies he normally eats. What about peas and beans? What does he normally eat, in other words, most days?

I know they can have dried beans, ground up. What about fresh? I’ve seen ppl give lima & lentals fresh. What other kinds can be givin fresh? Maybe, like you said, the fiber in those will help.

 Question: My Uro hasn’t ...

Fresh is okay actually, long as the beans aren’t the kidney variety, red, pink or white, and beans are served sparingly. All beans are toxic if given too much or especially if kidney beans are used, they are the largest beans and they contain the most of the "toxic" component in beans which is a form of lectin called "Phytohaemagglutnin".

There are pros and cons to dried, moist or fresh. With dried you can ground up more types of beans, some folks use up to 15 types in a ground up mix. This mix works sometimes as an appetiser on leafy greens. Frankly, beans are beans, 10-15 types may not make much difference in taste or nutrients. With fresh, there’s more moisture of course, but you probably will be serving fewer beans in each meal, and will be rotating some around for variety which is a good thing. I serve mine moist, just a few types as a "side dish" to his leafys. I add a tablespoon or two of water to them when they are dried, and 2-4 hours is just nice for keeping them crunchy and yet moist. The moist beans do dry out by the end of the day, so this way, I’m serving them moist and dry.

Thanx! I give my lil guy the dried a few times a week. He’ll eat those instead of greens, so they are more of a treat. But he loves his peas. I give those only once a week. Same thing, won’t eat his greens otherwise, lol Thanx for the advice.

 Question: My Uro hasn’t ...

HI,

the lettuce I do feed is the green leaf kind, and not too much of it, maybe 1-2 weeks, just a few pieces. Fresh Green Beans I always feed, and some Peas, but he doesn’t care for the Peas too much.
I also feed him Lima Beans, those pretty much on a daily bases . He only eats them once in a great while though!
He doesn’t eat too much fruit though, his favorite fruit is the blueberry, which I don’t give him every day no more.
He does act normal though, he moves around is alert, and doesn’t seem bothered by not having pooped. I will make an appt. with the vet today, and see what they suggest.
Thanks so much for all your advice, I do appreciate it.
Take care
Mali Mama

 Question: My Uro hasn’t ...

HI everyone,

We have a "pooper". The mineral oil did the trick.
My Dino pooped about 4 times today, what a relief
It all looked normal. I would have thought maybe it would look a little funky, since it’s been a while, but no. I am soooo reliefed ;-)
Thanks for all your advice.

No, no, no, your uro is relieved!!! LOL!!! Just kidding! Glad it all came out okay!! Okay, enough poop jokes!! BTW, blueberries are fine for your uro. They eat tons of fruit in the wild. Fruit & flowers are their staples, but we don’t have the same type of foods, so we have to work around what we do have, to get the right nutrients. No sticky fruit (banana’s). Mine are mostly mango, blueberry, types of guys! Won’t touch strawberries, which surprises me because they are red. They love red flowers, red peppers, etc. Oh, they like raspberry’s and blackberries too.

I’m glad both you and the uro are feeling better!! Good job!

I’m glad it all worked out, but if he gets constipated regularly from here, and he hasn’t seen a vet, keep an eye on what he eats, in other words, his diet, and let us know again if we can help along with the vet.

 Question: My Uro hasn’t ...

I agree, make sure he is eating properly, and not too much dry stuff! Uro’s get their water from their food. You feed all dry stuff, and you will have a very constipated uro! If you feel he needs a bit more "water", add a cut green grape every week, or even add a tad bit of one of the more water saturated lettuces, for the water content, not the nutrient content. Stick to endive, escarole, dandelion green, etc! And not much Millet. They love it, but check out their pooh, and you will see undigested millet. Doesn’t do much good if it goes in and comes out the same!! Just keep an eye on him. Make sure he has a good quantity of "water" with his poop. Sounds like you have it under control!
