Help deciding which uro species, in terms of size and housing

i am very much interested in getting a uro but am unsure which species to get, in terms of size and housing. I plan on using a costume tank that i made 2 years ago, previously used for beardies, the tank measures aprox 6 feet long, by 20 inches deep, by 3 feet tall, i plan on making adjustments to interior to suet the species i decide on, i can post a photo if this would help. I quite like the Egyptian uro but don’t now if my tank is big enough as i have seen differing info on their mature size. any suggestions or info on deferent uros and their size and housing will be much appreciated. thanx

Ive got an egyptian and my enclosure is 7 feet long. it all depends on how big it grows, some grow to 2feet long others however some grow 3 feet plus. In this case id say the enclosure is to small.

thanx for replying this is the first time i have used this forum, how long do u think this size tank will last, i wil be prepared to make a larger one, also are there any of the other uro species that grow to slightly smaller, it is tho the size and temperament of the Egyptian that attracted me in the first place

i was planing on increasing the size of the stone slab shelfs to increas floor space

Looks great and would be suitable for any species except an Egyptian.

what sizes do the other readily available species tend to grow, do any others reach 20 inches. what kind of size tank is ideal for an Egyptian? and do females tend to be smaller?

A Mali would be great in that enclosure!!! Dont quote me on this but i beleive they grow to about 12-14" With egyptians i think the size is based mainly on diet and upbringing, but males do tend to grow bigger than females. You say that the personality of the egyptian is what you liked, im sure some on here will tell you that the other species are nice aswell. Also the other species tend to have nicer colours

i agree , i have looked at some pictures of the other uros on here and they realy do have some lovely colours, do any of the other species fair well in pairs?, there is some thing about the egyption tho lol. if the tank is 6 ft long how deep would it need to be in your opinion, im just trying to get an idea of size so i can see weather or not i would have the space for it.

They need at least 20" of height so they can bask without getting burned by the high wattage bulbs they require.

this is my enclosure, its exactly 20" high and 7 feet long

this is my egyptian

As for pairing if you get them when they are young they may be Ok, but many people recommend keeping uros in seperate enclosures to reduce the chance of a stressed uro. Jbreddawg has kept his 2 uros together without problems but it is difficult to get a pair that wont fight.

think one is the safest option then. your uro looks real good, the more i see them the more i like them, your tank looks realy good to, did u build it your self? how deep is the tank from front to back

Wow thats a wopper!!!! like i said in the above post though, im not sure in the overall lengths of most of the species of uro. Everytime someone says "they grow to 14"" theres always someone out there that has one bigger

lol, yes obi carl, Maui is a big girl, she weighed in at 489gr. 2 wks ago. Compared to my saharan babies who are roughly 4-5 inches (hard getting an exact on them) Maui looks like a giant.

I see nothing wrong in getting an Egyptian if you upgrade larger like they said as it grows to a bigger size. I don’t see why they keep saying not to get one period, if that’s what you want to get, and you are willing to upgrade the cage as he grows, then I honestly don’t think there is anything wrong with getting one.

im still vary undecided ,i would never tho house an animal in a tank with inaducate space, i was considering doing some work on the current tank, extending the front to give a depth of 2 ft and replacing the slab shelf on the right for a biger one reaching half way across the tank, this would give then a 6ft by 2ft by 3ft tank with a 2ft by 3ft shelf/second floor which i thought would increase floor and living space, but is this still not enough space? i must admit that i am limitted to how big i can go, after all the tank is going to be in my home for some time.

Nobody is telling Chilly not to get one period....just trying to guide him/her in the right direction. Chilly asked if the tank was big enough and we said proberbly not for an egyptian. The modifications to the enclosure you have planned could work, Like i said before some grow to 2 feet long others near 3 feet. If yours does grow big you may have issues though. At the end of the day you can get whatever species you want.

Good luck!!
