CB from a reputable breeder is best. It is more expensive, but you cannot put a price on starting with a healthy uro. At this point you may need to wait, as shipping once the weather has gotten cold is dangerous.

Uro’s are not a cheap animal to set up. If your going by price, I suggest looking into something different. A correct setup for a healthy uro will run you in the neighborhood of 4-5 hundred dollars. A WC petstore uro will cost much more in vet visits, health problems and heartache then the initial 100 dollars you saved by not buying CB from a reputable breeder.

I recently go mine from Deer Fern Farms from Dr. Douglass Dix. Look up their website, they are in Washington state.

I actually saw Doug Dix’s baby Uro’s today (he had Mali’s, Saharan’s, Ornates and Ocellata’s) at a local reptile show and they were VERY HEALTHY and looked Excellent, you can’t go wrong with Doug at Deer Fern Farms, but as stated, you might have to wait now that the weather is getting colder, its much more dangerous to ship them in cold weather. Another good breeder is Linsey Pike at urotopia.com.

As stated earlier, it will be much more money in the long run to get a WC Uro from a pet store, you are better off getting a CB from a good breeder.

BEST PLACE to get a Mali

Sorry that a few of us had some preconceptions about your intentions. Many people come to this site without any idea of the true cost of keeping a uro. Frequently they come here having made an impulse purchase of a WC import for $50 from an unknown dealer at a show or a chain pet store, that they are keeping in a 20 gallon long, and when health problems follow they don’t have the money to take their uro to the vet.

To give us some credit though, your post clearly indicated you were looking at a very inexpensive uro, and your desire for a "social" uro had you looking at CB or LTC uros as well. There’s a lot more to the decision to buy CB than the temperament of the animal (especially considering that even CB uros aren’t always social.)

It’s good that you are doing your research ahead of time, and that you are interested in and capable of setting up an adequate enclosure.

I don’t know anything about keeping them outside (that would be problematic for me, as I live in NYC) but I have heard of someone doing it in Arizona or Nevada with Egyptians. I recall reading they sunk chain link and posts several feet underground, to keep the uros from burrowing out of the enclosure. I believe they still used basking lamps b/c despite being in a desert, it was still not warm enough to bask, and heat emitters were needed in the cool nights. I recommend you start tracking your temps & conditions at the site and figure out what you will do during a wet winters.

no were in any of my posts did i say i wanted a cheap uro. i said they had a 49.99 one at reptiledepot. i never said i wanted it for the cheapness. i am still new at them so i did not know it was better to get them captive bred. like most anoles, day geckos, and other lizards are WC and still make great pets. so i am only here to get info for the best care possible for one. i give credit to all of you who have been helping me out.... :)

BEST PLACE to get a Mali

Hi there, :)
I’d recommend adopting a Uro that needs a home because there are so many homeless Uros listed on Craigslist. I checked Craigslist for California and found quite a few Uros. They’re less expensive when you rescue and you’ll be saving a life, and that’s incredibly rewarding! Also, if you adopt your Uro, you’ll probably get a cage, hides, lights and other accessories to go with it. Like others said, it’s best to wait until the weather is warmer to get your Uro, but that’s because it’d be delivered to you; if you adopt yours you can get it right away since it won’t be shipped. I find rescuing any type of pet is the best way to go, and your Uro will appreciate you forever. [=

I’m not sure which city is near you, but there’s the link to choose the city and then type in "uromastyx". I saw some in LA and Sacramento, but I didn’t check all areas.
Good luck! =D

You said somthing about nigerians? According to Doug Dix, who i met at the reptile show, They are EXTREMLY hard to keep alive. He said that out of 100 mali hacthling, 1 will die. Out of hundred Nigerians, 66 will die. NOT A GOOD BEGINER SPECEIS! I personaly choose Doug Dix over Lindsy Pike.

I would recommend against Craigslist.
Same problems as with dealers, the seller isn’t accountable and husbandry is unknown.
For all you know it’s a WC animal that’s been fed crickets and has never had a UVB lamp. You don’t want the misery and vet bills.
Breeders are the way to go.

All your going to find on craigslist is someones unwanted, neglected reptile. If your ready as urorescurer was then by all means go for it but understand it’s probably the most difficult way to go.
