My uro is so shy :(

its been about a month and a half since i’ve had saundra. she’s about 8 inches long. she seems very healthy! every day she eats almost all her greens, sometimes she eats even more and i have to give her extra. she seems happy, usually running about in her cage. all the temperatures are stable and everything seems right. however, she is very shy.. i can’t even get my hands near the cage without her getting scared. i have never done anything like pulling her out of a hide or aproaching her the wrong way, she’s been scared since day 1. i was wondering if there was any way to make her comfortable with me? i dont handle her very often, maybe a total of 3 minutes every two days because i dont want to scare her more. i hope she stops being so scared!

That’s is not only often, but obsessive ! Stop handling her and let her acclimate. Your stressing her out .
You shouldn’t be handling her at all.

Either the animal will get used to you or not. Unlike some lizards handling will not advance the process. These animals are rather skittish and will require a lot of Patience on your part. It may never tolerate being handled, while some other folks Uro’s come up to them as soon as they open the tank. A Bearded dragon would have been a better pet to tolerate a lot of handling. These animals will either tolerate some eventually or don’t want to be handled, your not going to be able to force the issue either way.

I agree you should not be handling your uro. They are an observation pet, and should not be handled more than absolutely necessary.
Uros are a skittish lot, but you can try to get your uro comfortable with your presence in the room or enclosure. I occasionally do non-lizard activities in the lizards’ room (sewing & repotting plants) to get them used to my presence in the room. I also offer treats with my hands, my uros particularly like nasturtium blooms.
Works with some uros, but not all. My female will climb up onto my hands when I reach into the enclosure. My male will not approach me or take food from my hand; he won’t run from me but he will flick his tail at me and shower me with substrate if I get within a few inches.
