I can see why that is your favorite Uro. That is a gorgeous Ornate. Which other species of Uromastyx are you working with?

Very pretty animal, I chose a Mali since it was my first Uro and has a reputation for hardiness and didn’t want to put out as much money for the first one. If ever get another it will definitely be a Ornate!

He looks great, Thomasi! My young ornate is going to have a lot of yellow on him, too, but seems more turquoise. He is definitely not green!! What colors is your female?

What substrate are you using? Will that be ok for Beardies too? Also I’ve been thinking of getting a Uro for some time now. How are the Ornates compared to A Egyptian or a Mali?

The substrate in these pictures is millet seed. I have never kept beardies, so I don’t know if seed substrates are okay for them.

Ornates have the same basic husbandry & dietary requirements as malis & egyptians... ornates are a bit smaller than malis... egyptians get +2x larger than malis so they need a lot more space.

Uros are wonderful reptiles, but they are very different from beardeds in many ways. They should never be housed together, so plan for separate housing if you get one. Uros are also more of an ’observation pet’ and handling should be minimized; you should not remove uros from their enclosures unless absolutely necessary and then not for more than a few minutes. You can’t take uros out and walk around with them on your shoulders like you can with a bearded dragon. You should ask yourself if you will be happy with an animal with which you can only have limited interactions.
