I looked up online at a local pool supply store, and they have 3 different products that look like the ’pool filter sand’.

Do any of these sound correct? I thought the middle one since it said ultra fine. Maybe some of you have the same brands? I’ll keep looking... this stuff is a bit confusing

Wow thats expensive . I just use the washed sifted play sand . I sift it first to make sure its fine enough . I would think it would cost a lot to have it shipped .

I suspect that these are not actual bags of sand, rather these are the sack like filter bags in the actual pool filter.
Notice they have model numbers and don’t list the weight or quantity.

 Pool Filter Sand

Good point. A lot of the websites for local ’pool and spa’ places were just for installation services. That was the only one you could order parts and supplies from (even though it’s only a few miles away). I just didn’t want to call and totally confuse them asking about what is the best sand they carry for a uromastyx! haha. I’ll likley stick with the quickrete play sand I get at the hardware store, but it is dusty, and everyone seems to like this pool filter sand. I may head up there and see what they have, just not really sure what to look for! Plus, I don’t know if there are any chemicals the sand is treated with for the pool cleaning. :/ Thanks for the input anyway!

I believe it’s just sand. Algaecide chemicals in pools get added to the water. Sand in pool filters is only changed every 4 or 5 years, so it would not be an efficient way of adding chemicals.

There are rougher and finer grades of pool filter sand (rougher sand lasts longer in the filters) as you aren’t using it for it’s intended purpose I suggest you go with a finer one.

Pool supply places might not list the prices of the sand on their websites as it’s probably the cheapest thing they sell and people only buy it every few years, it’s probably not something pool owners will shop around for. I suggest dropping by a pool supply place and do your best to resist their sales efforts. Once they realize you just want the sand and not a pool I am sure they will sell you a bag.

Even the playsand has different grades.
When I moved recently , I took out all the old playsand of course I didnt get out every grain so there was still a bit left . When I set them back up, I used the new bag of sand . It had different color, size, texture .it actually looked like something completely different. Same manufacturer , came from home depot just like the other stuff. Pool filter sand is probably just a finer grade because it’s used in there filters.
Next time around, I will probably take a look the the filter stuff, but for now the playsand is just fine.

seriously, what is the point of pool filter sand? because of the fine texture? is it fear of impaction? they can’t burrow in it- a step in the wrong direction in my opinion. very unnatural. too loose.

hhmmmm my Uro’s borrow in it just fine, they are constantly digging in it.

And I use it because:
1. They were eating too much of the millet when I had that as a substrate
2. The Home Depot play sand SUCKED, dirty, dusty and too many small rocks and stone.
3. When the Uro urinates, the pee does NOT dry in clumps at all

hhmmmm...so where does the pee go...directly to the floor? yuk.
seems like ANOTHER reason NOT to use it.

You do not want to use any type of sand or substrate that clumps when wet . If it clumps in the cage it will also clump in the Uro’s stomach and intestinal tract causing impaction.

I guess I didn’t describe it correctly. It dries but doesn’t dry in clumps, it doesn’t even clump when it’s wet. I guess the best way to describe what it does is kinda like when a wave comes up on the beach, the sand gets wet but as the tide goes out, it dries, but doesn’t leave behind clumps of sand. You can run your fingers through it wet or dry. Of course you don’t want to run your fingers through Uro pee LOL I hope helps explain a little about pool filter sand and what it does.

Seriously, I’ve tried 3 Different substrates (4 if you include papertowels) and this stuff is the best thing I’ve used. It may be a bit more expensive ($13.99 for a 50 lb bag), but it’s easy to clean, no sifting of small rocks, no dirt, no dust and it does not clump when wet or dry.

Can they build deep burrows with it, no, but everything you can use that they can build burrows with (i.e. excavator sand) clumps which means it will clump in their digestive systems.

I change my sand which is just regular sifted play sand once every 2 months. you should also at this time use something to disinfect the bottom of the enclosure. I use a spray by zoo med called wipe out 1 its for terrariums and small animal cages and its active ingredient is ammonium chloride. i take all the sand out and all deco items out and of course my uro. then i spray it down let it sit for a couple min and then i wipe it all until its dry. I do this with all the lights on and then leave it for about 20 min to completely air out. I also use a floor fan to air it out better. then when there is no scent left i put in sand. I put in his rocks and baking rock and all is clean and done.

May sound like a good idea but I would seriously reconsider completely stressing your uro out every two months like that . even if you put everything back exactly like it was, he was still out of his comfort zone for 20 minutes or more and the will smell whatever you use to clean.
I find with the high temps , it stays pretty clean in there .

I sift out all the waste every couple of days and pick out dried veggies everyday, but only completely switched out and wiped down once . i moved and used that as the time to do it. I plan on a once a year schedule for a complete overhaul .
