Geryi help Hi, lve just got my uro and i’m a little worried about him. From reading these boards they seem to take a bit of time settling in. But calcium sand. Yes? No? Is it ok or is it a big no no?

Geryi help No, defiantly do not use calci sand . It can cause eye irritations , respiratory infections , impaction’s and Metabolic Bone Disease if ingested . It acts a lot like an antacid . The Uro will not be able to process the calcium from his foods . If the Uro is under 7 inches in length then put him on layers of paper towels . If he is over 7 inches long you can use a very fine sand like pool sand , washed sifted play sand or millet seeds . I prefer fine sand .

Geryi help ONLY if it doesn’t have sunflower seeds in shell, but please take note that if you put the Uro on seeds of any kind, it will most likely eat the seeds and NOT eat his/her greens as much.
I found this out with millet seed substrate. My younger Uro’s were eating the seeds and their poo was full of it, now after about 3 weeks on pool filter sand, no seeds in their poo and they are eating a full bowl of greens every day.
Like Skullkeeper said, if the Uro is under 7" long, it needs to be on papertowels, newspaper or butcher paper. After that washed sifted play sand, pool filter sand or millet seeds.

Geryi help Its very dangerous . I would not use it . If you decide to go with seed I would use millet . Some Uros will eat the seeds . They can not eat sun flower seeds or sharp pointed seeds .A little millet or finch seed is no problem but it they eat to much and not their veggies, seed as a substrate can be a problem. Besides I personally do not like the idea of my Uro eating some thing that he poos in . You can buy pool sand at a pool supplier or washed sifted play sand at most home improvement store very cheep. A 50 pound bag for only $2.50.
Most pet stores give out terrible info on Uros and recommends the calci sand . If you can return it I would or just throw it out . It is not safe for your Uro.

Geryi help Do not have the Uro in the cage when you put the sand in. Only have it about 1/4 inch deep. If you have it to deep it makes it hard for him to walk in. Let the sand settle a little before you put him in the cage .I would try to arrange it just like it is now . They do not like changes in their habitat . Also make sure any heavy objects like rocks or hides sit directly on the floor of the aquarium, then put the sand in around it . Uro’s like to dig and you do not want him to dig under a rock then have it fall on top of him.
