 Problems with Mega Ray Bulb

Just wondering if anyone else has had any problems with the Mega Ray. I got my first one in April and it lasted until late July. I called Bob and he told me to return it, which I did at my expense. He sent me another one and it arrived on August 12. I put in in on August 14th. It went out on August 15th. I have sent several emails asking what I should to, but haven’t heard back. (I don’t really want to pay $10 AGAIN to ship this bulb back) I called Bob about the first bulb, but I’m reluctant to call him again as he seems quite short on the phone, like he’s in a hurry to get off. I’m using a Fluker clamp lamp. The Mega Ray is 160 W.

Has anyone else had a problem with the Mega Ray burning out so quickly, or is it just my luck?
Thanks

I do not use them but many people here do. You can do a search and I am sure you will find many posts on the subject . I do know that you should not move them when they are hot .

With megarays or any other MV light for that matter , is shouldnt be able to move "not saying thats what you doing" They need to be VERY secure . Like a solid mount. No vibration,shakes,etc..
I have had my original one for 11 1/2 months with no problems. I just received a new one 2 days ago . I plan to switch out since it will be a year old .
Megarays are the best you can buy, if there going out that soon, look into how you have it mounted, is it getting moved alot ? Do you need to mave it constantly to feed them ? Does it get Also, try to not touch them with your bare hands , I use a washcloth when installing mine. I hear the oils from your hands can cause early failure. Hope this helps . Jerry

Also make sure you have it plugged into a good surge protector. When we got ours, I forgot to plug it into the surge protector and plugged it directly into the outlet and BAM, it blew immediately.

you shouldn’t be having these problems, i never had one just blow out. if bob seems short on the phone it is because everybody says,"call bob, call bob, call bob..." as if the man runs a 24hour noob hotline. maybe it is your fixture.

Remember that the mega ray bulbs also have an outo shutoff feature for if they get to hot. This has happened to me, and it didn’t come back on for about an hour afterwards. Dont know if that could be it. Just a suggestion.

My experience is that if you have it in a ceramic fixture fixed to the enclosure you won’t have a problem. My wife has them blow out all the time and she has them in a dome sitting on the screen top.

I actually change the uros every 12 months and keep the old one when my wife’s burn out. I have a 100w SB as a spare dated almost 19 months. I don’t know the uvb output since I don’t have a meter so I just replace them every year.

You absolutely need a ceramic fixture, that can handle the wattage. Check the dome your using, it is probably not capable of handling the bulb. Zilla has a dome you can find in petco for like $16, ceramic socket and holds up to 250w. Thats what I am using on my mega-ray 160w

Thank you all for your advice. My Mega Ray is never moved once put in the fixture. I did call and speak to Bob again and he offered to send me another out at no charge. I have also gotten a new Zilla ceramic socket that hold up to 250 W just to be sure.

When I receive the new bulb, I will use the advice that someone gave about not touching it with my bare hands due to the oil on our hands.

Again, thank you all so much. You were helpful, as usual!! :-)
