Need Your Assistance - Uro not coming out

First of all, I have to be honest, I was very apprehensive about posting after all the bashing I have seen on the forum lately, and have really only been lurking and not posting for the past few days

Secondly, I have to apologize for the REALLY Long post, but I but I’m having a problem with one of my Uro’s not coming out of his hide at all and wanted to ensure you had as much information as possible.

A little background and timeline of events. We were using millet as substrate, Liono, our older larger Uro was in the upper enclosure and the younger Uro’s were in the lower enclosure. All were active, basking, eating, pooping and running around.

We then switched them to Washed Play sand from Home Depot on July 26th and at the same time, moved Liono to lower enclosure and moved the three younger Uro’s to the upper enclosure. After only 1 week, I found I HATED the washed play sand as it was dirty, dusty and had too many small rocks in it.

On Aug. 2nd we changed the substrate to Pool Filter Sand in the upper enclosure for the younger Uro’s and changed it for Liono in the lower enclosure on Aug. 9th. Everything was great for about 3 - 4 Days after the change in Liono’s enclosure. All the Uro’s were running around, very active, eating, pooping, basking and of course glass dancing. This continues to be the situation for the younger Uro’s in the upper enclosure and in fact they are much more active, eating all their food, are out from about 10am until 4pm daily, sometimes even later.

Liono on the other hand is a whole other story and here in lies my problem. He hasn’t come out to eat, poop or bask since Aug. 12th. He will come out of his hide for a flower if I wave it by his hide, but then retreats back to his hide. I know he is not coming out because each morning when I give him fresh greens I smooth out the sand and there haven’t been any footprints in it at all and his food hasn’t been touched.

I believe there are few possible things going on:

1. He is still adjusting to the new enclosure and sand, even though the two enclosures are identical in substrate, decor, lighting, heating and hides.
2. He has some kind of parasite and isn’t feeling good.
3. He is impacted, possibly ate some of the small rocks in the washed play sand
4. He can now see the the cats and the cats can see him, and he is totally freaked out.

I have a few ideas on fixing the cat situation
1. Cover the windows with some kind of 1-way film, so we can see in, but the Uro can’t see out
2. Cover the enclosures with some kind of lightweight fabric so the cats cant see the Uro

We got some of the Boundary spray and it kept the cats at bay for about 3 weeks, but they got used to the smell. We then got an indoor invisible fencing system with receivers for both cats, unfortunately, my cats are WEIRD and actually liked getting zapped. We thought about moving the enclosures to another room but we measured NUMEROUS areas and walls in the two possible rooms that we could move the enclosures to and there is NO WAY it will fit on any of the walls or in any area of either room. Plus one of the rooms is our computer room with an A/C unit installed, we definitely don’t want them in there.

I have filled out the "Read Before Posting" so you guys can get an idea of my set up.... The information is IDENTICAL for both enclosures but the animial information only refers to Liono:

1) How long have you owned the animal - Liono - Since Jan 08
2) Dimensions of the enclosure you are using. Measure it- do not guess or give gallon size - 60" L x 24" W x 18" H, made of solid oak with 2 screens, 1 on each end for air flow
3) Species (if known), length, and weight of the animal - Mali, approx 11", weight unknown
4) Listing of all animals kept in the enclosure referred to in the post – Just Liono
5) Basking spot temperature and how that temperature was measured - 125 - 135* depending on where I point the temp gun on his basking slate - IR temp Gun
6) Temperature throughout the rest of the enclosure (warm and cool areas) and how these temperatures were measured e.g. digital thermometer, stick on dial thermometer. Provide the nighttime temperatures as well. - Cool end = 82 - 84*, Hot end = 97 - 99*, Ambient = 94 - 99* depending on where I aim the Temp Gun. Two Flucker’s Digital Thermometers w/ Humidity monitors on them and IR Temp Gun. Humidity on hot end is 0% and on the cool end is 20%. Nighttime temps very between 72 - 75* depending on the temp in the house and if the furnace kicks in.

I know my daytime temps are a little low but the sand does retain heat alot better than the millet did and it is over 110* inside the hide (measured with an IR Temp Gun).

I have tried putting in a 160w bulb, this takes the basking area into the 150’s and the ambient temp on the hot end gets over 120*. I tried turning on the CHE during the day, but that also got the ambient temp way too high (115*)

7) Acknowledge whether you are using a UVB bulb and if so, the brand, age of bulb, and distance from the bulb to the uromastyx - MVB, 100w w/ Repti-Sun 10.0 compact flourescent bulb. 3 Months old.
8) Diet items being fed and how often each item is fed - Daily = endive, escarole, dandelion leaves, organic spring mix. I add in Bok Choy, radicchio, soaked lentils, edible flowers and grated squash/zucchini on a rotation
9) List of the supplements being used, how much is used, and how often the supplement is used – I was using the Miner-All (1x per week) and Mazuri pellet dust (2x per week), but have since discontinued using them because Liono WAS eating well.
10) Type of substrate (cage bottom material). If this is sand, state whether it is calcium sand – Pool Filter Sand
11) Describe your animal’s daily routine. When it exits the hide, when it retreats for the night, how long it is usually out throughout the day, is it active during this time, how much time does it spend sitting on the basking spot…. Before enclosure & Sand change, he was out and about by 10am, sometimes even earlier, munching on his greens, glass dancing, basking and just running around. He had usually retreated by the time I got home at 5:30pm. Now he doesn’t come out at all unless enticed by a flower then retreats back to his hide
12) Describe your animal’s appetite. He was eating at least 1 Cup of greens per day sometimes more, now only flowers when enticed out of his hide.
13) Describe any unusual behaviors you are seeing or any recent changes in behavior. Also note whether any recent modifications have been made to this animal’s environment. e.g new enclosure, move to another room, new heat bulb.... See Above Background Info
14) Describe how often this animal is handled and the type of handling. Only when absolutely necessary; vet visits, cleanings, etc.
15) State whether the animal has been to a vet, when that was, and whether the animal was diagnosed with a medical condition. Also state whether the Uromastyx has ever had a fecal check. If so states when the fecal check was done, what was found, and if medication was prescribed. He was taken to the vet when we first got him (Jan 08), no fecal was done as the vet did not deem it necessary, no medical problems found. I am taking him to the vet tomorrow (Saturday) for a check up.
You can check out pictures of Liono HERE
Thoughts and / or suggestions?
Thank you in advance.
Anne

The constant changes could be a possibility, but I would tend to think more of the cats, seeing as how you had an issues with that in the past. I would try and maybe partly cover the front of the enclosure and maybe try moving his food closer to his hide, maybe that will get him to come out and eat a bit. just a thought... hopefully everything is ok when you get to the vet tomorrrow

Yeah, I am leaning more towards the cats too.... I’m stopping at HD or Lowe’s tonight to see if they have 1-way window film like you see on car windows. I might actually have to go to a car detailing place to get what I am looking for. Do you think that he will be freaked out even more if he sees is his reflection?

hmmmmm I hadn’t thought of moving his food, I have it on top of slate so no sand gets in the food. I’ll try that idea too :)

Thanks !

im a newbie when it comes to Uros, but cats i know. This may sound crazy and it might be a long shot. But cats really hate tin foil, apparently they refuse to walk on it. I usually suggest it when people want to stop their cat peeing or scratching in a certain area.

But saying that, its very impractical to have tin foil in strange areas, im not sure where abouts u could put it depending on your room. Hmm maybe its worth a shot.

How deep is the sand ? I would defiantly have a fecal check done . I am not sure why you are not able to get your basking area up to 120-130* in that cage without the ambient temp. going to high . Is your basking temp. that low in the other enclosure too?

The sand is only about 1/4" deep throughout both enclosures. And the temps in the upper enclosure are about 5 - 8* higher across the board. The basking area in the upper enclosure was 132* last night and the ambient was 102* 5" from the basking area.

I replaced all the lights this morning…. Because the upper enclosure gets a little of the heat from the lower enclosure, I put a NEW 100w MVB, Repti-Sun 10.0 fluorescent and a 40w household light in the upper enclosure.

The Lower enclosure that Liono is in, now has a NEW 160w MVB, Repti-Sun 10.0 fluorescent and a 40w household light. I found shorter pavers at Lowe’s last night for the slate hide so now it only sitting 1” from the bottom of the enclosure instead of 2”. We’ll see what that does for the temps once the enclosures warm up. The lights just turned on about 30 mins. ago.

The basking area in the lower enclosure was 128* last night when I got home, if I point the IR Temp gun directly at the basking area under the light, 6" to the right (closer to the window) it was 119*. Is that still too low? The sand maintains heat so much better than the millet did and I just don’t want to roast them. Under the hide last night it was 112*.

I hope that makes some sort of sense.

I think its probably the cats. I had to dog sit for my mom and when our uro saw the dog for the first time he froze. He sort of moved in slow motion towards his hide and stayed there for 3 days! An hour after my mom came to pick up the dog, he was out basking.

Kind of off topic, but I have been wondering why you have both the MVB and a Repti-Sun Fluorescent...?

Well, I made the mistake of ordering enclosures only 18" High and when I put in my MegaRay’s they were only 8" from the basking surfuce, which is WAY too close, so I had to find an alternative. The only bulb I found that wouldn’t be to close to the basking area and fry my Uro’s was a SunSeeker MVB and it’s my understanding that they don’t put out the UVB recommended, so I supplement the MVB with the compact Fluorescent which is 16" from the bottom of the enclosure. Does that make sense?

As of right now ... Liono’s enclosure is at:
Basking: 132.5*
Ambient (Hot End): 102.1* (0% Humidity)
Cool end: 85.4* (24% Humidity)
Under the slate Hide: 114.3*

All temps taken with an IR Temp gun. To achieve these temps, I did have to turn on the CHE. Before I turned it on, ambient was only 96*.

And guess what? HE IS OUT and is at his food bowl nibbling. Hopefully he’ll give me a fecal today sometime to take to the vet with me. I’m still taking him just to make sure there is nothing wrong with him.

Thanks Anne, I forgot about the whole Mega Ray + not tall enough of an enclosure for your situation.

Glad to hear Liono is out and eating again, too!

Woohoooo !! We have MAJOR POOP & Calcium !!! LOL ...Never thought I would be so happy to see poop.

He is out and running around, eating, and basking. Looks like it was the temps. I’m so glad it was nothing serious.

I am still getting something to cover the windows with. He must have known I was worried about him. I am also still taking him to the vet and I got fecals from ALL the Uro’s and taking them with me.

Thank you all for your suggestions and assistance.

Sometimes the same bulb will be packaged to be sold by several different companies . So even if you dont find the exact name of yours, still be very careful .

Quick update ....

Liono is coming out each day and eating and pooping again.

All the Uro’s came back clean for parasites and the vet said Liono was very healthy.

We have covered the entire enclosure with cardboard until we can get the 1-way window film, so the cat’s can’t see in and the Uro’s can’t see out. They have all been active and out most of the day. This seems to be a good temporary fix for the stress thing.

Thanks again to everyone for your assistance.

Oh and Jbreddawg ... I got in touch with the UK site that did the study on the CFL’s and they are currently doing a study on the Repti-Glo 10.0 CLF that I am using, so far, from what they have found, they are considering this a "Safe" CFL when installed at least 12" from the bottom of the enclosure, and mine is over 14" above that point. Thanks for your concern though :)
