 Chloramine

The city water here is treated with chloramine. This stuff is so toxic, that you have to use chemicals to neutralize it for aquariums, unlike just plain chlorine that will evaporate after letting the water sit for 24 hrs.

Does anyone here have the same type of water, and what do you do for your lizards? I’m giving them distilled water right now, because I do not trust the so-called bottled spring-water (most of it is just filtered tap water), but am a bit worried when I wash their veggies, as it gets pretty freakin’ expensive to wash everything in distilled water! ;) I do have a product that I treat the water with for my aquariums, called Prime (from Seachem), but it smells very sulphury so wouldn’t want to put that on their food.

This is an interesting topic, I’m looking forward to hearing what people have to say. As for us, we have well water and I have 2 large Brita Pitchers for everyone in the reptile room (Goober doesn’t get a water bowl, Raymond [Adult Corn Snake], Copper and Snickers [Ball Pythons], Cheeto and Sheila [Leopard Geckos], Mortimer Ezekiel Frogsworth [PacMan], Xavier [Garter Snake], as well as the spritzer for Mortimer and Stumpy [7 legged Rose Haired]). We do wash Goober’s greens, and defrost the snakes’ mice in tap water though. Something I never really thought about.

I live in the USA and have never even heard of this chemical. You might call a reptile vet in Canada and ask them what you should do . I wouldn’t want to take any chances with your Uro .

Thanks SK, now why didn’t I think of that? DOH!

I’ll also post something on the local Herp society forum, should of thought of that, too. Bleah, lack of sleep...

Here’s a good link explaining chloramine (sorry, it’s aquarium related):

http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_chlorine.htm

It says the products used to remove it contain, among other things, Sodium Thiosulfate, which is supposedly non toxic. The one I use for my aquariums is Seachem Prime, and according to the MSDS it says : "Do not introduce to drinking water or foodstuffs." Strange thing about this MSDS is that it does not list any of the components. I thought they had to be listed, unless proprietary.

One of the members of my local herp society says that the benefits of chloramine outweigh any negative aspects, and that it has been proven safe for *human* consumption. Somehow, without years of trial and testing, I cannot agree with this. After all, fluoride was supposed to be "safe", but now, after a few generations using it, the problems are starting to manifest themselves.

So, I’m still skeptical.

You might message Uro_fan. She maybe able to tell you some thing about it . I know that fish, birds and reptiles are pretty sensitive to chemicals and fumes of any kind .If it doesn’t kill a fish I would think it would be okay for lizards but thats just a guess . It maybe a small amount on the veggies would be okay, since a Uro would not be drinking large amounts but I really can not say .I think I would use distilled water until you are sure .

I live in Canada too. Where do you live that they put this in your water?

You could also contact a local zoo. I just read up a little on Chloramine a and I think that a zoo would have the best and most up to date information for all of their animals, not just generic information.
