 Glass Dancing?

Is this ok? She is climbing up the glass and going all the way around the tank. I feel sooo bad. This Uro wants out - bad. I feel like I need to do something. I don’t know. This one is active today! I just don’t know where she thinks she wants to go, or why.

Now she got tired and just stopped, moved to a corner and went to sleep.

Much bigger tank is needed as soon as you can . Proper temps and tank size reduce glass dancing to a minimum.
Uros cruise along at a pretty good pace , in the wild they have all the space they need to run , in captivity , even the largest enclosures we provide pale in comparison.
I had mine in a 40 gal breeder while building their larger cage . Once it was done, glass dancing was reduced to probably about 1/8 to a 1/4 of what is was before the change.

I bought the biggest one. I would have to go to custom next. I think this one might need a whole room and it would still try to be getting out.

Glass cages

I have seen these tanks in person and there really nice !!
the 48x24x25 one is perfect !!!
Once you go with an enclosure that opens in the front, you will never go back to a fishtank for keeping a reptile. It’s so much easier to access on a daily basis .

I have a 48X24X 12 tall, so that is not much bigger.

You might double check your temperatures with accurate digital/IR thermometers. We’re having a wicked heat wave right now and the room temp is much warmer than usual. I have to monitor things carefully to keep cage temps correct. Your uro might be telling you things are off.

I’m constantly checking the temps.

I saw a video on Youtube of a lady that has bid Uros and hers act the same way. She let hers out to run around.

What kind of thermometers are you using ? Dial and stick on ones are very inaccurate . You do need a larger tank than a 30 gallon . Usually glass dancing is due to a small cage and/or in proper temps . Those issues need to be corrected asap. Some times Uro’s will still glass dance but it will be less frequent .

I just got my uro ( Mali Species) and he’s been doing that too... He’s about 3 and 1/2 in. long and is in a terraruim that, compared to his body, is enough for him and at least 3 other baby uros... I read the above... I have a Suction Cup Backed thermometer... The Basking spot is over 100 F* and still rising... Am I doing something wrong???

Your basking temp should be 120F. Stick on thermometers are highly inaccurate. Get an IR temp gun for the basking spot, and use a digital thermometer for ambient temps.

What I cannot understand is why the basking spot is supposed to be so important when at 120, my Uro stays away from there and always is on the cool side. And then when I hear people on here say that their Uros are always in the hide. Doesn’t make any sence. I’m confused.

Mali Girl- Yes you are doing some thing wrong . I would like to know the exact measurements of this nice cage large enough for a Mali and 3 other baby Uro’s . I see that your baby is only 3 1/2 inches long . Can I ask what kind of substrate you are using ? The suction cup thermometer you are using is a piece of crap. You are not getting accurate temp. readings which can be fatal to your baby . You need at least two digital thermometers , one for each end of your tank. If this is part of the excellent advice that the pet store gave you, well I am afraid your Uro will not live long if you do not correct things immediately . We are here to help you so if you can answer the questions from the post " Before posting " it might greatly benefit your baby Uro. Babies are less forgiving than an adult Uro so please don’t want to long .

A 30 breeder is not a 30 gal. tank.

What is the actual measured size of your tank ?

Quote:

That size tank doesnt exist . If you got it from the petstore it is quite possibly a 55 gallon which is 48x21x13 but that is way too narrow for a uro .

Quote:

I got the 30 breeder. I didn’t see but one bigger and that was the 40 breeder and I kind of wanted the shorter one so the lamp would be closer to the bottom. May have been dumb but I didn’t know.

If thats what you have then it is 36x18x12 again, way too small.

At this point the 40 breeder would be better but you REALLY need something bigger .

Ok smarty pantes. I got the yardstick and measured for real this time. It is 36" X 18" X 13" and it is way too small. I didn’t know 30 breeder was a 30 gallon. Makes sense though. Soooooo, I’m already thinking or building one. I’m female though, but I’ve had a shop class. hahahahaha , it will look like . I don’t know what to do.

The 31" tall part would be wasted space since you would have to have all of your lights inside. The UV should only be 12" above the basking spot, usually. I would ask around to see if someone could help you build something. It isn’t hard, and doesn’t have to be fancy. Just a big box, with maybe a glass front. The glass can even be in a frame, so the whole thing can drop down (so you can get in to feed & clean, etc.). A lot of us have sliding glass and tracks and fancy, stuff, but it isn’t necessary, just fun!! You can make it as fancy or as simple as you need to!! I have seen some very simple ones on here that are just perfect for what they are for!! And it sure wouldn’t cost $500.00 to build. Home Depot will even cut the plywood to your dimensions. You can do it, girl! Remeber, on this forum, the majority of us are girls (women!), even though some of the names don’t imply that!!

Not trying to be any smarty pants . just trying to steer you in the right direction . Tons of people come on here and guess at the size and then are suprised when there way off.

Anyhow , the cages from glass cages.com are WAYYYY better then an aquarium . These are lizards that need daily care . Feeding,cleaning,etc.. with lights on top, it is a constant pain to move them.
When you have front sliding doors, the lights stay put.
These cages , even with shipping are still one of the best deals out there .
Glass cages
They have full glass, or solid color sides and back with glass doors. There really nice cages.

Actually, for what you get on those, the prices are VERY reasonable. We paid way more for our oak enclosures.
