Abnormal Tank Measurements... are they okay?

My dad has a tank in his basement that is HUGE... I wanted to post the measurements to see if you guys think we can get the correct temp gradients in it. It is all glass and is 60" left to right 24" Top to bottom and 18" front to back. It doesn’t have a top yet but we can build a wood top to hold in the heat. Do you think this would be okay?

It’s to bad it’s not 24 front to back and 18 high . That’s the problem with using fish tanks , there for , well... fish lol !! Fish typically need more vertical space while uros need more floor space. If it’s bigger then your current tank I say go for it !! If not, I would keep an eye out something more along the lines of 24 wide and a minimum of 48 long.
Temps should be no problem with it being 60 inches long .

Sorry, 18 inches is too narrow.

Ideally 24" is better, 18" isn’t terrible. It is at least bigger then 12" or 13" tanks (usually the 40g or 50g sizes)
What you have there is a 90gal, i think. That is much better then any smaller tank, I say go for it. You can achieve proper temps, and your giving the Uro plenty of space with a long tank like that as well.

I think you would be able to use it... the 18" is a bit narrow, but it’s five feet long so there is running room. If it’s 24" tall, which is the same height as my AP cages, you could maybe mount the lights/heat inside the tank from the top somehow, just making sure that your Uro can’t reach them and get burned. I had my Gizmo in a 4’ x 18" tank while waiting for my AP cages to be built, and he did fine in there. I was able to get the proper temp gradient for him.

Thanks. I think we will try it. We are going to build a top to the tank first then get it all set up and adjust the lighting to get the temps right before we switch him over. Any advice on under tank heating? We have one now should we still use an under tank heater for his new tank?

Good plan. Dont use the undertank heater. Uros dont know to get off of them and can get burned .
What size tank are they in now ?

He’s in a 40 Gal right now. We are getting the tank asap. We turned the under tank heater off recently because he’s on paper towel and that doesn’t absorb the heat as much as the sand, alfalfa, millet that we had him on before. We are still deciding on which substrate to use at this point. We will keep him on paper towels until we figure out what’s going on with his tail. Still waiting for the vet results to come in.

How many lights/ceramic heaters do you think we will need for this size tank??

We were thinking about making a wood top for the tank so we could mount light sockets into it. Any other suggestions would be helpful.

It’s not the optimal size tank since it’s a bit narrow but it’s certainly a big step-up from the 40 . It will work for awhile .
I have built several hoods for fish tanks and reptile tanks. Do yourself a HUGH favor and mount the lights in the back half of the hood and hinge the front for access . You will need to get in there everyday for feeding and cleaning and you don’t want to be moving lights all the time. Here’s a pic of my current enclosure , you could build a hood similar to sit on top of an aquarium.

What would be the best way to clean this tank. It had fish in it at one point... a long time ago. I want to be sure that is is completely clean for Jimbo. I haven’t looked at the pics Jbreddawg, I’m at work and for some reason all the pictures on this forum don’t come through. I’ll take a look at them tonight. I’m pretty sure the tank has the hinged doors but I’m thinking I’ll have to rebuild it anyway because the lights that are already there are not going to be enough or close enough to get the right temps.

Wow... that’s amazing. I’ll have to show these to my dad to see if he can build us something like this.
