 Afternoon snack/ question about tail

I just caught Wrinks enjoying a snack and thought i would post a pic of him. He is doing well loves the new cage and his new light has made him a whole different uro.
I feel bad that my heat was affecting him so much. When i read all the post about uro not liking to be held or how they didn’t like being touched it was so un like mine well now i know why my guy was half asleep.... once my temps got right he doesn’t like being played with so if your uro just loves to be played with check your temps it is true. what this fourm has to say about heat and handling. I miss the way he used to be able to be held and seemed to enjoy it but, he is now eating, growing and his color is soooooooooooo much brighter. His color has turned from drab gray to a yellow so bright. My temps were 115- 60 at night to 130- 65 ish I also noticed he does less glass dances I don’t know if this is becuase he has a larger cage or why but, he is more like the hands off pet now and i’m ok with that i’m just glad he seems happy.

question about tail. In the one pic you can see the last 3 rings of his tail are darker he shed them about 3 mo. ago but the rest is not could he have hurt it and just lost the three rings? It looks fine not tail rot just wondering if this sometimes happens. He shed about 1 mo ago. He still has a bit left of the top of his head but the rest is gone.

Very good looking guy !!!
I’m glad you understand why these are mostly a hands off kind of pet. People just don’t comprehend that there a desert species . They maintain a pretty high body temp and when people pull them out, put them on their bed and sit in a chair with them "sleeping" on their shoulder they don’t realize how much there screwing up the uros body temps. I highly doubt most peoples homes are around 100 degrees , so they can loose their heat very quickly .
You can definitely see the difference once you start getting things stable , there more active, better colors, eat better, less glass dancing.
Hopefully others will read your experiences and take note !!!

He is beautiful!! At first I thought you had applied a ’watercolor’ type setting to the picture, then realize that it was just his patterning. Wow, one of the more pretty malis I have ever seen. So great that he has plumped up and is in a better routine. As for his tail, they shed a few rows at a time. Like, last year Goober shed the first 3 or 4, and just a couple weeks/months ago he shed the next 4 or 5. So, the tail typically sheds a few rows at a time. A closer up and clear picture of the tip of the tail may help to rule out any uckie stuff going on with it, just to be sure. But, I must say, he looks fabulous.

I think someone told me he was a she but, i still call her a him. Here is a pic of his tail close up. he is right next to his food dish so that is what you see to the south of his tail. thanks for any advise on the tail. As i was taking the pic it almost looks like the next set is starting to lift.

Those pictures are great! Thanks for the warning of the food dish, haha. I have a Red Saharan, so when he sheds his tail, it doesn’t have any of the ’checkerboard’ that the Mali’s do. The spikes look well formed and shaped, their colour is just darker. That could be part of the aging and better environment, and it does not appear to me right-off-the-bat that there is any sort of infection or issue with the tail. Someone else should be able to give you a better answer soon!

 Afternoon snack/ question about tail

Has he been seen by a vet with Uro experience recently ? Was a culture done on the tail? If so what did the vet say ? If not I would have a culture done asap to be on the safe side.
I would up my night time temps. to 70-75 * . I think you will see him do even better .

I have not taken him to the vet in about 6 mo. My vet has little experience but is willing to do and learn. I live in a small town way up in the sticks( U.P. of MI). and no one with in 300 miles deals with Uro’s I will take him in on Monday and have a culture done.

If i up the night time temps would you use a blue light or what so the light is not a factor. I could use a heat bulb? I had a heat mat that was on the bottom of my cage but with my new cage that is not an option anymore. thanks for your input. Sue

The best way to up night time temps is to add a Ceramic Heat Emitter ... you probably only need a 40w or 60w ... we only use them during the winter.
