 Need Info

I went to the pet store to get dog food and came home with a Uromastyx. She is BIG, approx. 14" long.

I got a lot of info from a uromastyx book they had there and looking on the internet. Some questions I have still are:

How do they handle house noise? Should I have a quiet area? Does the t.v. noise bother them? I don’t have any little kids so that is a plus.

Is it strange the mine stays out of the direct light of the heat lamp? She goes to where it’s about 90 degrees. When I turn the lamp off, she will go into that area? Why would she not like the warmer area?

I’ve been watching my Uro for 7 hours (since I brought home) and she hasn’t gone near the food yet. Some carrot, peas, green beans, vitamin powder - I’m going to the organic store tomorrow to get greens. How long before I start to worry?

I will be looking for a reptile vet tomorrow.

I have to order the UVB light. How long can they go without it? Should I rush out to buy one or will 4 or 5 days be ok?

She doesn’t seem to want to hide under the hollow log, is that strange.

I fear anything happening.

Tell me everything, please.
Thank you,
New to Uro.

Link has a really good care sheet. Do you know which species of uromastyx it is?

What size cage do you have? What are your basking temps and cool side temps? You should probably fill out the questionnaire posted here: Link

It’s not surprising your uro didn’t eat right away, they need time to settle down into a new home and it was probably stressed at the pet shop..

Thanks. I read the top care sheet. I will look at the questionnaire.

I got the 30 breeder. I didn’t see but one bigger and that was the 40 breeder and I kind of wanted the shorter one so the lamp would be closer to the bottom. May have been dumb but I didn’t know.

I took tems at 120 under the light, 95 just out of the light then 85 and then 80 furthest from the light.

I don’t know the exact species. I’ll get a picture on here and maybe you can tell me.

Yes, that’s what it is! I saw it on the tag but didn’t know if that was the species.

Looks to be a Mali, could be male, but hard to tell from that pic.

The tank you got is way too small. For a Uro that size, the tank needs to be at least a 75G (48"x18"x18")
something larger such as (48"x24"x24") is even better. You need a temperature gradient, not just a small spot where the temps are ’ok’. How are you measuring the temps by the way? The UVB is important for them to properly digest and utilize vitamin D3. The sooner you get one, the better. Also, the UVB can’t be blocked by the screen top, you will have to cut a hole for it.

Please read the post"Before Posting " and answers the questions so we can help you better.

It can take weeks to months for a Uro to acclimate . Do not hold her unless absolutely necessary . You might want to cover 3 sides of the cage with aquarium back ground or cut up brown paper bags to give her a more secure feeling . You may even want to cover the entire cage for a few days until she starts eating . If you can get a stool sample I would take it in to be checked for parasites . If you don’t have one in time for the vet check, take one in when you do get one .I would defiantly look into getting a larger cage asap. Are you using digital thermometers ? You need two , one for each end of the enclosure and a temp gun is best for monitoring your basking area . What is your night time temp?

Your Uro is a Mali and looks thin from the picture .

A few days without the UVB light will be okay but I would not put off for more than that . If you get a florescent bulb you will need to suspend it under your screen ( that’s how I have mine and change it every 5-6 months ) . If you get a mega ray or Mercury bulb you may need to cut a hole in the screen ( I am not sure ) . They put out much more UVB rays , last longer ,are more expensive but are better bulbs . They do get very hot though where as the florescent does not .A screen can block the UVB rays from reaching the Uro.

The breeder tank is 48" X 24" but only 12" tall. I got the short one because they don’t climb much.
But now I’m almost sorry. I left the top off (because my Uro not move much for the first 24 hours) to go look at slates and lights and stuff at the store. When I came back she’s OUT and running around like she’s looking for the nearest exit. I even read that on here, that this would happen. WOW.

LOL !!! Good thing you found him quickly . It still amazes me all the people who come on here and state how there uro is too fat , or too lazy to climb and uros dont climb anyways .
As you have found out , they can and do climb !
