substrate, you can use millet seed, but it needs to be changed out every so often as it can get moldy with humidity. Other options are paper towels or newspaper for Uro’s under 6-7" in length, washed playsand is another option as well for a Uro OVER 6-7"
Uro’s rarely bite, the only chance of them trying to hurt you will be by getting whipped by their tail.
Mali’s can get around 14" when fully grown, so you will need a large enough tank to provide them with room and proper temperature gradients.

Please don’t take this the wrong way but before you get too excited and go out and make an impulse buy, please read the care sheets Here Uro Care Sheet and Here Deer Fern Farms

And please take heed, that it can be quite expensive to get the proper environment set up for a Uro, minimum of $500 plus the cost of the animal, any vet bills that might arise, higher Electric Bills and of course weekly food. Make sure you are fully prepared BEFORE you get the animal. Get the enclosure all set up for at least a week before bring the Uro home.

My Uro’s were an impulse buy at a Reptile Show and I wish I had read up on them before getting them. I’ve probably put out over $1500 in enclosures, lights, heating, substrate and decor in the past 9 months to ensure my babies have the right everything.

Good Luck.

Uro’s are not only expensive to get set up and need a large cage from the start no matter how small they are in order to have a good temp. gradient but they are also an observation kinda pet. If you are looking for a pet you can hold , have out of the cage for more than a few minutes or one to crawl around your room and play with, a Uro is not for you .Even though they rarely bite , they are not for beginners and do not do well with handling . You might think about a gecko or Bearded Dragon instead .

Why would you trust the pet shop people over the people here ? They are out to make a profit . They will be nice to you and tell you anything to get your money including selling you things you will not need . Their motive is money. Our motive is to help people have a good experience and a healthy Uro .The people here are only trying to help you .

I just needed to add that you came here asking for advice from people with Uromastyx experience . You got good advice but have decided not to take it . I can guarantee that some of us here have years more experience with Uro’s than anyone at the pet store . But its your call. From your posts I believe that your young . I would suggest that you have your parents read this forum and do some research before they buy the Uro for you . It might save you and them time , money and heart ache .

 Uro Questions!!!

I’ve done research on about 5 other sites and they all said the stuff that the Reptile Store told me...
that birdseed is a good substrate...
they can be handeled...
and i trust everyone but i really agree with the store because they told me about the animal in the first place!!!! thanks everyone i take everyones advice im just taking my pet stores advice also just because i know that they have such a large varitey of animals that every time i go in there, i still see the humungous (really old) iguana so they got to know what there doing. they even told my dad some tips for his tortoise and the tortoise is doing much better now.
I know that everyone that responded with helpful advice has more experience than me, but I don’t really know anyone on the forums or the pets that they have so thank you for all your advice *** everyone that responded*** and i know you have experience but i also know that my pet store does also. and i know that i can take care of a pet. I happen to have 2 fish, 2 guniea pigs and i always take care of my dads tortoise. And i have had a total of 4 hermit crabs. So I know that everyone on the forums has experience but i’m guessing that since my reptile store is about a 5 minute drive from my house i can say that whenever i want to go, my dad drives me so i can ask whatever questions and i get my answers and i trust them. but i also trust RepticZones forums and their members. So... Thank you, but i would like for you to not be mean at all about the reptile store that i trust. So, once again, thanks to everyone, and I’ll take everyones advice.

Once again, as has been stated, it’s a business. They may or may not know what they are doing but, more than that, they want to sell animals and will say whay they have to in order to sell one.

Also, if you were so sure in the first place that your store is correct, why did you bother asking on here. You ignored what everybody told you because you are so sure that the people at your store know better. So why ask in the first place?

This really is the only uro forum that has consistently good info. I too have searched other sites .
you seem to be set on your decision and I’m sure nothing any of us could say will sway you.
your pet store told you they can be handled , please read this post by another member of this forum .
Holding

It’s fine to have a good relation with a local pet store as long as it’s not a franchise like petco or petsmart. But you really need to understand , they are still in the business to sell . This forum makes no money from you, we all only have the best interest for you and the uro.
You will do yourself and your uro a great service by actually listening to people with many years of actual uro experience over someone who wants to sell you something.

Hey, guys, you’ve been blown off for "petstore" guys!! Anyone want to make any bets to see how long before she comes back crying because the 20L tank, 110 basking temps and constant handling has made her poor uromastyx stay in his hide all day!! Note, she never answered one question about what they told her. I already feel sorry for the poor uro!!

 Uro Questions!!!

I was just wondering.. Could Somebody Stop Dissing Me and My Reptile Store?????? Like, I just got my Uro, and I know what to do... I’ve Read all the comments and NO you aren’t gonna make bets on me. OK, cuz I really think that its just IMMATURE to do that, I don’t even know you guys, but you expect me to trust you over the reptile store that I Know Is only trying to help, so... Negative Comments aren’t needed. I’ve gotten advice from the reptile store, this site and other sites and care sheets and, I’m up to the point where... I’m believing ALL OF YOU!!! So... stop trying to make me regret buying one because:
1st of all its a Birthday present
2nd of all I Got One!!!!! Deal with it.
And I don’t think you need a 3rd of all, so... You can keep on coming with negative comments until year 2059, but, I really think that ,because I have done research for so many days, that If I have problems, I’ll ask, but I didn’t ask anything recently, so, why are you answering? And I’m not gonna go back to the store crying. I just got him today and he lets my handle him already. I Think, that for now, I’ll be fine.
PLEASE STOP TRASH TALKING AND DISSING MY REPTILE STORE!!!! They Happen To Be The BESTtest place that I know to ASK and BE ANSWERED. So.... Comment whatever but don’t expect me to melt and be all ’ OMG i totally should have gotten a kitten cuz i can’t handle this!!!’ Cuz I CAN HANDLE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comments like that are why people do not show you respect. Your post is incredibly immature. What you need to do is properly care for the Uro. Proper tank size, proper lighting, heat gradient, food, etc. Once that is all up to par, then everyone will recognize that you are doing what is in the best interest of the animal and you will then receive the respect you are looking for. Until then, you are on your own, as you have previously ignored proper advice.

I wasn’t going to even answer you, but I would take the word of almost EVERYONE here over ANY Petstore, whether its one of the big chain stores or a small "Mom & Pop" store ANYDAY. WHY you ask? Because these people aren’t out to sell me anything or make me buy things that I don’t need. As stated earlier by a couple of people, no matter what kind of pet store they are, in this economy, they are out to make a profit.

I’ve seen Uro’s in BOTH situations and NEITHER one of them knew anything about Uro’s or how to care for them. So you go right ahead and listen to them and we’ll see you back here in about 2 - 3 weeks asking us why your Uro is lathargic and not eating.

Quote:

he lets my handle him already. I Think, that for now, I’ll be fine.

Oh and as for the handling, I was like you when I first got mine too, I was handling them everyday, then found out (FROM THE EXPERIENCED PEOPLE HERE) it causes them STRESS which can cause them to stop eating, stop being active and just hide all day. Since I have stopped handling them, they are out everyday, very active, eating like pigs, are healthy and growing big time. Go on and keep handling your Uro, it will NOT be fine in the very near future.

I am not that experienced, I’ve only had my 4 Uro’s for 9 months but I can tell you, these people here have helped me more than I can even say thank you for. One of the members even went to the Vet with me when my little Albert got attacked by my cat. She got me the name and number of a Reptile Vet and met me there to calm me down. Where else would you find a group of people that care like that about an animal or another person?

Congratulations on getting a Uro and I totally believe we’ll see you back here in the future with problems.

He’s about 3 and 1/2 in. long and is in a terraruim that, compared to his body, is enough for him and at least 3 other baby uros...

Cry all you want, you will be gone soon. People try to help and all you do is wine. You must be about 13 .
Size of the tank has NOTHING to do with the size of the uro , but I’m sure your TRUSTED petstore told you he will be fine because he’s just so small "and cute"
Tank size is all about proper temp gradient not how big it is "compared" to the Uri.

Quote:

I have a Suction Cup Backed thermometer... The Basking spot is over 100 F* and still rising... Am I doing something wrong???

I’m sure they sold you those suction cup thermometers also . You know they can be up to 20 degrees off ??
Do you know what temps you need for a baby uro ?
To answer your question , YES your doing something wrong !! ALOT wrong.
Only being harsh because you seem young and naive . Trust me on this one, nobody here has anything to gain by helping you other then to see your uro healthy and in a good environment .We dont make money from you, we dont know you . So, please use some down home common sense . When you beloved petstore sold you a baby uro , sold you a tank that could house a baby and 3 more , sold you a suction cup thermometer . Thats ALL WRONG !! But if you choose to believe them over people with YEARS of actual experience then so be it. Run to the fuzzy forums when all the others go who get there feelings hurt when people try to help, just because it straight and to the point .

Mali Girl- I see that you got the Uro. If the pet stores gave you great advice could you be so kind to share it with others ?

Like the size of cage ,the length of your Uro, the temp. of your night time ,cool end ,ambient, and basking area ?What you are feeding, type of substrate your using ,when he was last checked for parasites , types of thermometers and lighting you are using and post a picture of your set up? The great advice that they gave you might help others . I am more than curious just what they did tell you .

I hate it even more knowing it is only 3 1/2" long!! I am crushed about such a little defenseless baby!! I guess I was right about the 20L part, but am amazed at the 100 degree basking. Poor baby! It makes me want to cry!! It is probably on calci sand, too, and God know’s what they recommend feeding the little thing!

I hate to even think about what is going to happen to them. People like this makes my blood boil !
