Orange egg like objects in cage

I searched for eggs but what I saw did not really help me. I have a female mali (I think). I have had her for 6.5 years now. She is 6 - 7 years old. Today we saw three orange egg like objects in her cage. She has been a little bit more picky about her food also. It is possible that these are eggs, correct. Could someone confirm what they should look like and if I need to be doing anything. Thank you. Her daily habits have not changed. She comes out in the morning when the light comes on and waits to see me and then usually hangs out there for most of the day, eats and then goes into one of her caves. She eats, dandelions, bok choy and the other suggested foods.

It is likely that these are infertile eggs. They are a dull yellow color when laid and will turn orange in color as they dry.

Thank you for the response. I was hoping it would be you that would write back as I feel that you will guide me in the right directions. Do I need to do anything for her? Should I just take the infertile eggs out. How often does this happen as she has never done this before. Thank you.

The main concern is that she does not retain any eggs. You may want to provide a nest box for her.

It is not uncommon for a female to go off food prior to oviposition. Provide the nest box and a shallow lid of water every morning. She may not drink until after she has laid all of the eggs but it is still a good idea to have the water in with her. Even though the eggs are not fertile, the entire process still takes a huge toll on the body.

It is impossible to tell how many eggs she may have formed. Could be just the three you see, could be a dozen more. Keep an eye on her. If you see a sudden change in behavior where she becomes lethargic, you would want to get her to a vet for radiographs to make sure that she is not struggling with retained eggs.

A lone female uromastyx producing infertile eggs does not appear to be as common as with some other species but it does occasionally happen.

You may not ever have to deal with it again or, she may now do this every year going forward. I would be interested in tracking whether she does continue with this on a yearly basis so if you would be kind enough to keep me posted, I would appreciate it.

Odd question here (and my initial guess would be NO) but has there ever been any documented cases of Parthenogenesis in Uromastyx, that can occur in some lizard species?

None that I have ever heard of.

I have also not seen any credible evidence of sperm retention in female uromastyx. I would think that this possiblity (retention) would be more likely with uromastyx than parthenogenesis.

Yeah, parthenogenesis has only be infrequently documented in some lizard species (Uros not being one on the list), and I believe that is under certain "selection" pressures (or a novel situation).

Just curious since it is an interesting situation...

Sorry, I haven’t written back yet. Brother in law is coming from Costa Rica and I have been cleaning like crazy. Can you please describe a nesting box for me? She still seems a bit tired but she does move around in her normal routine, just not as quickly and is eating, just not as much. I will definitely watch for any sudden changes.and definitely track of if she produces again and make a post. Thank you!
