Tuff,

I have used millet for over three years with dozens of reptiles and have not suffered any impactions nor have I witnessed any health concerns while using it. I know that Doug Dix has used millet for even longer than myself and he has not seen any health issues from using millet as a substrate either.

If your uro is very young or if your uromastyx views the substrate as part of its diet and intentionally consumes moderate or large amounts, I would consider looking at another substrate. If he/she occasionally snacks on a few pieces and ingests some uncracked seed while eating greens, I personally would not be too concerned.

Tuff,

It will not be unusual to see some undigested millet again in the future. It sounds as if you are not seeing him eat it very often and that some of his droppings do not contain millet so it appears that all is ok.

I am a new uro owner and I am using that crushed walnut. How bad is it? Should I remove that. I am really scared of compaction, because I had a leopard gecko hatchling die from it. The pet store had him on sand and I had done research and hatchlings shouldn’t be on sand till 6 months old so I put down paper towel but I think the damage was already done, because I had him for almost 3 weeks and he wouldn’t eat and he died. And what is millet, I have never heard of that. Also my uro is a little guy maybe 3 inches. So what should I put him on, I have notice that he likes to dig, so I don’t want to take something away from him that he likes.

Yes, crushed walnut is that bad. Personally I use a canary mix that is millet and some kind of grass seed - they seem to be doing well in it and it smells nice.

I used crushed walnut too when I first brought Pogo home. Made the mistake of listening to a pet store clerk. I’ve since switched to birdseed. I don’t have to worry about impaction and I don’t have to watch her like a hawk (which she hates) when she happens to be nibbling on her substrate.

Millet is a little round seeds, it’s a grain that you may find in multi-grain bread. It’s about the size of a sesame seed but round. Your little guy’s too young for bird seeds so leave him on paper until he’s at least 6" long. Birdseed can cause impaction in younger uros too. I bought a bag of wild bird seed mix with black oil/sunflower seeds sifted out.

Walnut cannot only cause an impaction, but it can also cause internal bleeding by putting small gouges on the intestinal tract. The first question I have is how big is your Uro? I start may Uros. on seed only when they reach at least 6 inches, that way I know if they do ingest any of the seed it should not cause any harm. Until then I would use paper towels, brown paper, or shelf paper. The main thing is get him/her off the crushed walnut shell. If you go to Douglas Dix care sheets at Uromastyx you will find many interesting and informative items that will help you along the way with your Uro. There are many great people here who will be happy to help, but we always like to recommend that site to new owners. Joan A.

Thanks! I feed my uro corn, peas green beans, lima beans, carrots which he won’t eat very often. I do though have a question about fruit I have not tried yet, do they have a favorite? I have him in a 20 gallon tank with a uvb and A light, which is one of them coil lights and only 20 watts so I use a heat bulb too, which I think I need a higher watt, because so far his tank has only gotten to about 95 do you think that is fine, or need a higher watt light? I took the walnut out and put paper towel down, but oh he was mad, under his rock he always went in there and kicked them out and dug his self under now he can’t. But as long as he will be ok, he will have to get over it. Yesterday when I switched him I fed him and he stayed out of his hide most of the day, that is the first time since I have had him. Usually he comes out to be fed and goes back in his hide. He was going crazy! I have him next to my 2 leopard geckos and they seen each other, really cute. The leo was looking at him like he was a cricket, lol Then Chubs (uro) wanted over there on lemons (LEO) rock. It was really cute, though. I will shut up now lol Thanks for the info though. Really appreciate it a lot.

Do you have an elevated surface under the lightbulb for him to bask in? 95 is a little on the cool side for the hot end of the enclosure, and I think you’ll soon need to upgrade to a larger tank in any event. Just remember, to hit optimum temperature, he’ll need a pretty toasty spot (like around 115-130) to bask in, then other areas to run to in order to cool down.

I’d also add more good leafy stuff to the diet - mine love escarole, chickory/endive, bok choi, and napa cabbage.

Ok thanks I will get him more leafy stuff, and I will go make an elevated place for him now. I am planning on getting him a bigger place in a while, but he is small right now, so it will be ok for now, won’t it?
I want to share a picture of him, kinda like a new mom thing lol

I use curly endive and escarole for Pogo’s stable food. No romaine lettuce or any other kind of normal salad lettuce.

The reason for a larger tank is not so much for the size of your little pet, it’s mostly for regulating the temperature. Which is difficult to do at the best of time.

Cute little guy, is his tail curled under or just short?

Ok I will have to get some of that endive or escarole, but I don’t think that I have ever seen it sold any where, can you get it at county market?
And I will be getting him a bigger tank soon, because yesterday he was out most of the day, and every time I would walk by he went crazy, like trying to get me or something. I wouls stick my hand in there to give him something to eat and he would take it and run on his rock, it was really cute.
His tail is curled under my hand, he didn’t really like me picking him up that was like a couple days after I got him, so I just took one picture, once he gets used to me, I will post another.
I did elevate his rocks, and it did get to 110. I think that is one reason he was going crazy lol I don’t know. And under his hide on the cool side is 85. But I will get him a bigger tank! He’s going to need that room to run, poor little thing is going to get brain damage, hitting his head on the glass all the time. I put a piece of paper between his and the leos cage, but he knows it is there and trying to climb over the paper, lol Well thanks for everyones help!

As long as your Uro. is at least 6-7 inches long millet is a good substrate. You want to make sure that the seed does not have any sunflower seeds. I use a parakeet seed that is fortified with vitamins. My Uros can care less about the seed. They want their veggies, but if they do ingest seed I know they will have less of a chance getting an impaction as they would with sand. Joan A.

I use the canary seed they sell at Wal-mart - no sunflower seeds to sift out! I know mine munch on them, as their stool often has some more or less whole seeds mixed in with it. For me, the terrarium just smells so much better w/ seed, I’d never go back to sand.
