Way overgrown box turtle nails -- please HELP!!!

I hope this site is still active. I need help! I have a 19 year old box turtle that belonged to my son. This poor turtles nails both front and back are incredibly long to the point of curling and crossing over each other. It greatly hampers her ability to walk and I feel so bad for her. A friend that works at a pet store said that they really can’t be cut much because the quick of her nails is almost as long as the nails themselves and she would experience significant pain and bleeding. My question is this....is there anything that can be done to get her nails to a manageable length? Do the nail quicks eventually receed if I cut just a little at a time over the period of several weeks/months?

Thank you for any advice!!

I would recommend a vet visit, and letting a vet do their nails, especially if you haven’t cut reptiles nails before.
