 Snapping Turtle identification?

So I found a snapping turtle, and it has no ridges on it’s tail like all snapping turtles I know of, and it’s shell is 100% smooth. It has a really dome-like shell, like a box turtle. Any clue? I want to take it to an expert to get it identified. I’ll try to get pics up soon.

i have a baby snapper and he is quite smooth, but extremly rough. it could be a soft shell, or posobly a painted turtle of some type. never heard of a all smooth snapper. jaws, my snapper is 3 inches long and has a leaf shaped shell. check for that, talk to you later.

I am positive it’s a snapper, and not a soft shell. I’ve spent a lot of time researching it and found nothing. I know that when snappers are older they get smoother shells, but they always have ridges on the back at the tail and on the tail, and he’s probably the size of a small football so he’s not old enough for that and doesn’t have any of the ridges. We saw two more of them in a river where we caught him.

I actually think it may be a Mud Turtle, but I’m still not sure of what kind. I looked it up for snappers and muds, and don’t know.
